Herbals are books which describe the physical characteristics and properties of herbs and other plants. John Gerard's "Herbal or General History of Plants" has long been the most famous English herbal. First published in 1597, it was republished in 1633 in an edition in which Thomas Johnson revised and enlarged the original text.

The quantity of herbals produced changed in 1450 with the development of the Gutenberg Press, which allowed their mass production with engraved plates.

Generally, the name in this list is in Latin and English (or common name for non-English herbals) is given, and the author where known. The link has the physical description if known of the herbal, and the place of production.

The list of herbals also contains Medicinals and other works and these have been included because of the descriptions given to plants in their folios. The date shown in this list should be the original (estimated) date written. Post period herbals are also of interest as to distinguish what details they include as distinct from what is and is not mentioned in prior herbals.

The majority of the list was created from a source document originally produced by the SCA Kingdom of Meridian Herbalists Guild who kindly allowed contents to be copied. Additional information was initially contributed from the Kingdom of Lochac and other SCA kingdoms may subsequently have contributed. Please see the Herb Garden guild page for information on the various Kingdom guild pages.

The intent of this list is to link to a page for each herbal/each type of herbal mentioned providing the following details:-
* Where examples of the actual herbal can now actually be found. To be viewed physically or online.
* When reproductions were created, and perhaps the year of the first remaining reproduction.
* What facsimile copies have been produced. And also in what books, images from the herbals appear.
* As well as the contents of each herbal, preferably a summary, and then some details.
* Discussions between herbals are to have their own pages referenced from within each herbal page.
* Descriptions of plants in herbals should include details of the time of growth, uses (medicinal or culinary etc) and illustrations as given.

If an asterix (*) appears after the listing for a herbal, this means a page specific to the herbal is still to be created.

Faucheeur: add in link for the Herbal of al-Ghafiqi

The majority of the list was created from a source document originally produced by the Kingdom of Meridian Herbalists Guild who kindly allowed contents to be copied. Additional information was initially contributed from the Kingdom of Lochac and other kingdoms may subsequently have contributed. Please see the Herb Garden guild page for information on the various Kingdom guild pages.

The intent of this list is to link to a page for each herbal/each type of herbal mentioned providing the following details:-
Where examples of the actual herbal can now actually be found. To be viewed physically or online.
When reproductions were created, and perhaps the year of the first remaining reproduction.
What facsimile copies have been produced. And also in what books, images from the herbals appear.
As well as the contents of each herbal, preferably a summary, and then some details.
Discussions between herbals are to have their own pages referenced from within each herbal page.
Descriptions of plants in herbals should include details of the time of growth, uses (medicinal or culinary etc) and illustrations as given.

If an asterix (*) appears after the listing for a herbal, this means a page specific to the herbal is still to be created.
Books about herbals and gardens published after 1901 can be found at Herbals_post1901.

Faucheeur: update dates and link for Tractatus de Herbis, and add in reference for An Herbal, 1440

Generally, the Latin and English (or common name for non-English herbals) is given, as is a physical description, the place of growth, the time of growth, uses (medicinal or culinary etc) and illustrations.

The list of herbals also contains Medicinals and these have been included because of the descriptions given to plants in their folios. The date shown in this list should be the original (estimated) date written. Post period herbals are also of interest as to distinguish what details they include as distinct from what is and is not mentioned in prior herbals.

The majority of the list was created from a source document originally produced by the Kingdom of Meridian Herbalists Guild who kindly allowed contents to be copied. Additional entries may have contributed from the Kingdom of Lochac.

If an asterix (*) appears after the listing for a herbal, this means a page specific to the herbal is still to be created.
published in 1679 by the Royal Society of London, one of the chapters of Malpighi's major work on plants, Anatomes Plantarum, and richly illustrated with 67 figures in 15 plates.

Taken from the advertisement from the publisher of the Ray Society facsimile of De Gallis:-
Malpighi's De Gallis, investigated gall structure and studied galls as they grew, describing and illustrating them so accurately that most of them can be recognised today. Plant galls are remarkable objects, often beautiful and sometimes bizarre. They are formed of plant tissue but are caused by another organism, usually an insect or mite, and, thus, they straddle the worlds of botany and zoology. Knowledge of galls has a long history, since the 5th century BC. First used as herbal medicines and later for dyeing cloth and leather and for ink-making.
Hardcover Facsimile Together with a Translation and Interpretation of De Gallis, one chapter of Anatomes Plantarum
A translation of the original Latin follows the facsimile with an interpretation interleaved on facing pages. This allows the translation to lead directly to the recognition of each gall that Malpighi described and enables any difficult or obscure parts of the text to be explained. Most of the galls are illustrated in colour, allowing direct comparison between Malpighi's drawings and modern images. This English translation and interpretation of the galls familiar to Malpighi should make De Gallis and its meticulous illustrations available to a wider audience.

Faucheeur: /* Herbals */ add in link for De Gallis / put in proper name for Gerard's Herbal / remove spurious header of 15th Century

If an asterix (*) appears after the listing for a herbal, this means a page specific to the herbal is still to be created.

Faucheeur: /* Guilds */ add in Herb and Garden Guild for Lochac

The following is a list of SCA groups within the Kingdom of Lochac.

You can obtain an up-to-date list here:

http://www.sca.org.au/lochac/groups/groups.php

This list is taken from a database maintained by the Kingdom Seneschal and also contains up to date lists of group contacts. Furthermore, the database contains a mapping from Australian groups to Postcodes so that you can enter your postcode or suburb name into the web form and it will tell you what group you belong to.

Some interesting fluff about groups in the Kingdom of Lochac:

* All groups have a set of postcodes assigned, except groups in New Zealand and colleges. The registrar's database uses the same mapping so that your membership card will have the correct group on it based on your postcode.
* New Zealand groups are assigned by telephone area code.
* Colleges are assigned by personal choice -- if you say on your membership form that you're in a college then that's what the registrar will put on your membership card and that's what the Kingdom Seneschal will assign your membership to.
* If you belong to a college then you also count towards the membership of the group in which you live (not the group where the college is based), so that if you live in Arrowsreach but are a member of St Monica's then your membership will count towards Arrowsreach and not Krae Glas.

Membership assignment to groups is important -- to count as an official group, a shire, canton, or college must have 5 members and a barony must have 25. Note that as of October 2004 all members, including family and associate members, count towards group numbers.
Books written post SCA period are also often of interest as can show information in a modern setting as well as shed information about what was said in the past. And this page is for a list of books about herbs published subsequent to 1901

The intent of this list is to link to a page for book for each herbal/each book about a herbal mentioned providing the following details:-
When book was written and what herbals or herbs they refer to, and other publication data (including IBSN).
Where book can be viewed physically or online.
As well as the contents of each herbal, preferably a summary, and then some details.
When reprintings were done, and perhaps the year of the most recent printing.
What images are in the books from original herbals.

If an asterix (*) appears after the listing for a herbal, this means a page specific to the herbal is still to be created.

If an asterix (*) appears after the listing for a herbal, this means a page specific to the herbal is still to be created.
Books about herbals and gardens published after 1901 can be found at Herbals_post1901.
