'''The Pennsic War: A Video documentary''' is the largest documentary ever made of the [[Pennsic War]]. It was created by [[Duckball Home Video]], a small group of independent videographers located in Brooklyn, NY ([[Canton of Brokenbridge]]). They had met [[Ervald the Optimistic]] through a mutual friend at a bar known as Gallagher's Ships Mast, and upon learning about the [[SCA]], decided they wanted to make a documentary about it. They headed out to Pennsic with three cameras and five crew, and shot 50 hours of footage. It turned out to be a 68 minute documentary, covering Pennsic XX, including interviews with such folks as [[Duke]] [[Sir]] [[Cariadoc of the Bow]], [[Master]] El of the Two Knives, and others. It sold over 400 copies in two years.

In 2000, Watch This Space Enterprises (a company belonging to Ervald the Optimistic) acquired the video and the surviving raw footage (about 40% of it, that which was shot by one of the videographers, had disappeared). He edited together 47 minutes of footage and packaged a new edition, which is now available through the Watch This Space website and on Amazon.com.

In 2007, the Special Edition was released on DVD. In 2011, it was announced that Ervald will be shooting a follow-up video at Pennsic IV to be titled "Return to Pennsic."

The history of the Pennsic War is somewhat unique. King [[Cariadoc of the Bow|Cariadoc]] of the Middle sent a declaration of war to the Eastrealm in [[A.S. V]], but nothing ever came of it. In [[A.S. VII]] King Cariadoc of the East (he had moved and won a crown tourney in the interim) found the old declaration of war and promptly accepted, leading a [[army]] of Easterners west across the mountains. The Midrealm defeated them, making Cariadoc the first king in history to declare war on himself and lose.

The '''Crown Province of Ostgardr''' encompasses the 5 boroughs of New York City (Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens and Staten Island) as well as Nassau County and Westchester and Putnam counties. It is the original core of the [[East Kingdom]], since when some [[SCA]] folks moved east about [[1968]] or so, they settled in New York.

The province encompasses three existing [[canton]]s and one [[incipient]] canton as of [[A.S. XLI]]. [[Lion's End]] encompasses Nassau County, Long Island; [[Northpass]] encompasses Westchester and Putnam counties north of the city limits; [[Whyt Whey]] is the County of New York (mostly the island of Manhattan); and Brooklyn holds the incipient canton of [[Brokenbridge]].

===History===
Ostgardr is the only [[Crown Province]] in the East Kingdom, and it is a [[province]] rather than a [[barony]] because the early [[kings]] of the East mostly lived in or around New York City. When, one day the [[gentle]] who won [[crown tournament]] did not live in New York or its environs, it was decided that the lands the king had held for himself would be administered by a [[Viceroy]] and/or [[Vicereine]], who would hold those lands directly at the king's behest.

To date, there have been three [[viceregal]] tenures in the province, and soon there will be a fourth. [[Ian Mitchell of Clan Mitchell]] and [[Katherine Gillesfleur]] have been the Viceroy and Vicereine of Ostgardr for almost 27 years, starting in [[1980]]. They will be succeeded by Alexandre Lerot d'Avigne and Eularia Trewe on Saturday, [[A.S. XLI]], September 9.

Ervald: First entry for Canton of Whyt Whey

The Canton of Whyt Whey is defined by the borders of the county of New York.

The origins of the Canton of Whyt Whey lay in the back yard of Sir Edward Zifran of Gendy in the 1980's. He would hold fighter practice back there and afterwards would everyone would go to a restauant accross the street called P.J. Reynolds (now defunct). Eventually the fighter practice was no longer held at his house, vbut the gathering at the restaurant on Tuesday nights remained.

Sometime about 1988, someone loooked around and said words to the effect of "hey, we could start a canton here!" The original thought was to call the canton "Grate Whyte Whey" as a pun on the mispelling of [[Ostgardr]] that would mean "cheese farm" and the nickname for Broadway. The heralds allowed for only the last two words to be the name of the canton.

There was much debate over the deevice for the canton. Some of the founding mebers were adamant about it having cockroaches, that most indomitable of local fauna, on it. Others were grossed out by the idea. The current registered device is "Sable, a german beetle dismembered within a laurel wreath and on a chief embattled argent, a pomme."

Being located in the county of New York (which is mostly the island of Manhattan), few full-size, and no camping events have ever occurred there. Possibly the largest event was the "May Games event held in Central Park, with the feast held at the West Side YMCA. The group does many demos for schools, and has had a presence at the [[Fort Tryon Park Medieval Festival]] for several years. From 1992-2005 the weekday fighter practices were held in Union Square, and many news organizations, TV stations, and independent journalists, photographers, and videographers have acquired words, pictures, and footage of SCA members and SCA fighting there.

The newsletter is known as the [[Cheese Cloth]]
