Limes were probably brought from Indonesia/Malaysia area through Asia to Persia (around 1000-1200) and then began to be taken back to western Europe by returning crusaders, probably as early at the 13th century.
The most common variety of modern lime is a cross of lemons and limes, making them larger, juiceier, and slightly less sour than period equivalents. The bumps on the end of the lime (like on clasic pictures of lemons) distinguish this variety from older varieties. Common tomato: Lycopersicon esculentum

A plant with juicy red fruit; technically a relative of the apple and therefore a fruit. rather than a vegetable.

The origin of the word tomato is Latin for 'juicy wolf peach' because they were believed to evoke werewolves, and were initially believed to be poisonous (and despite being proven otherwise, some people like to hold onto the belief that they are still poisonous to avoid eating them... unless they're made into a sauce). They only became popular in the early 1820s after it was discovered they weren't poisonous, and became exceptionally popular in the 1920s when they became widely cultivated.

They were also known as love apples, in part because it was thought that, cut athwart, they resembled the heart and therefore, under the Law of Correspondences, could be used to affect that organ, especially in the matter of eros.

It's a common SCA myth that tomatoes were not available in Europe in the SCA period (pre-seventeenth century).

In fact, as with many New World (read North and South Americas) foods (like chocolate), it was in fact known, and utilised, if in different ways to the modern palate. If anything, the initial rarity value made it an expensive novelty.

They were known as "Golden Apples", and were for example eaten as follows:

"The golden apple one eats in the same way as the eggplant with pepper, salt and oil, but it gives little and evil nutrition."
(Source: "Herbario nuovo", Roma, 1585, dall'introduzione di Piero Camporesi a "La scienza in cucina e l'arte del mangiare bene" di Pellegrino Artusi)

For an excellent discussion on tomatoes and their use in the SCA period, read this excellent article available at Stefan's Florilegium:
http://www.florilegium.org/files/FOOD-VEGETABLES/16C-Tomato-art.html

If, for some bizarre reason, you want to grow tomatoes, they're apparently fairly easy to cultivate. You can readily buy seeds and seedlings from the supermarket or Bunnings, and you should plant them in full sun so they get plenty of water. You may have to fight a number of tomato problems such as anthracnose, bacterial canker, black mould, curly top, early blight, root rot, powdery mildew, southern blight, infectious chlorosis virus, tomato pith necrosis, water mould, white mould.

There are also lots of insects which like to munch on your tomato plant, such as: lygus bugs, potato tuberworm (they've clearly become confused), stink bugs, fruit worms, pin worms, leafhopers, aphids, leaf miners, mites, cutworms and symphlyans. Nematodes will also have a fun time with your tomato.

Tomatoes are a nitrogen hungry crop, so planting them in a plot after a crop of legumes is common. Due to the bright red colouring of many varieties being a bird attractor many store bought tomatoes are not fully vine ripened unless they are hydroponically grown. This is the reason hydroponic tomatoes generally taste better, although netting plants can allow fruits to ripen on the vine without fear of avine menaces.

There are many tomato varieties (non-hybrid) such as:
* Cherry tomatoes
* Roma tomatoes
* Leopard tomatoes, a.k.a Tigrella
* Hardy Tom
* Grosse Lisse
* Yellow Pear
* Rouge de Marmade
* Brandywine
* Swedish tomatoes
* Jubilee
* Stupice
* Plum tomatoes
* Evergreen tomatoes

The mango, a tropical fruit, was first recorded in Europe in 1328 by Friar Jordanus Catalani. The name mango is not documented in Europe until 1510. Earlier it was probably called ambag. While celebrated in India, Africa, and the many other tropical places where it flourished and developed into the varieties known today, it has remained relatively obscure in Europe and probably should not be considered period, except perhaps as an oddity.
Kingdom of Alvia
Since you added it to Other re-enactment sites, could you explain what exactly Alvia is coz the homepage confuses me. Is it a fictional kingdom played within Far Isles or is it a breakaway group from Far Isles? - Cian Gillebhrath

:Alvia as such never existed, and, in due course, will come off here. It was "invented" as a Far Isles plot device. I offered to flesh it out, did so, and found that the people who'd started it had forgotten saying I could, and thought someone had run with the idea and founded it. However, the FI have stuck with it and (for those who don't know the *truth*) I don't want to spoil the illusion that it might be Out There Somewhere. It's here short-term simply for that reason (and because I built the p*gg*ng web-site and I'm proud(-ish) of it. Thank you for bothering to look at it. It will also die eventually, but I have three more heraldic devices to put on, and several Guilds yet to do. Not to mention possibly the Return of Wicked!Alix and her Dupe-Princess!Ysabeau.
"post-racialist Uk PoV"? Your additions are good and in-depth, so what is a "post-racialist"? Are you meaning a modern Brit having a Roman PoV in the timeline of the "post-Roman Empire"? - Cian Gillebhrath
No, merely writing as someone whose ancestors were probably at least indirectly responsible for the annihilation of African civilization. We will certainly have benefited from it, given that without it there would be no British Empire, just a muddy island occasionally conquered by the French.

User Status
You have just been upgraded to sysop level. As you did not ask for this you will be relieved to know that this status comes with no obligations. It does however allow you to do a number of things such as edit the Main Page, and block spammers. To block spammers go to the Recent Changes page, where the block option will come up for any user that has not logged in (ie, they are an IP address). If they have logged in, you can block them by going to Special pages, scrolling to the bottom, clicking on Block User and typing in their name.

There are a couple of other minor things you can do, including protecting pages, but there is only one page where it was felt that was necessary, so it's not a commonly used power.

If you have any further questions, just put them up here. In part this is our way of saying both that we trust you, and we appreciate your efforts on the wiki. Conrad Leviston 08:54, 27 May 2005 (CDT)
*Thank you -- I will endeavour to live up to the high standards you have set. I hope you don't mind if I exercise this, later this week, by just slotting in the Scottish kings onto the Main Page, so that I can get to them quicker, for edits. May I say that Cunnan has fast become one of my favourite sites to visit and to contribute to, because of the peaceful and scholarly atmosphere -- something which I sometimes miss in Real Life, let alone on the World Wide Weirdness.

Religion in the Renaissance can be best summed up by saying that the Renaissance was a period of huge religious turmoil. The debates between the Humanists and Scholastics eventually lead to the debates that began the Reformation, and many of the religious debates can be broadly (and as inaccurately as broad generalisations usually are) categorised as a battle between the Reformers and the Catholic Church. See Humanists and the Reformation.

The battle between the Reformers and the Catholic Church more properly belongs to the Reformation than the Renaissance however.

Having said that, the man in the street took a much greater interest in religion during the Renaissance than during the Middle Ages -- if only because the religious discourses of the time affected his or her life to a much greater extent than previously. Joe Average of 1540 would be much more likely to hold a strong religious opinion than Joe Average of 1340 -- who would most likely have simply believed whatever he heard at the pulpit.

Religion and Free Thought
Note that the reformation didn't always promote religious free thought. Neither Luther nor Calvin were great advocates of free thought -- but perhaps Michael Servetus was. Of course he got burned at the stake for Heresy, in John Calvin's Geneva -- where the Program of Reform in 1523 actually banned all Catholic forms of worship.

Butter is used in all sorts of cooking, and tastes great! To make your own, you will need:

*1/4 pint cream (which you skimmed from the milk of your cow which you bred using completely period farming techniques and raised on entirely period food. And of course the cow was milked into a period bucket)
*a clean and dry screw top jar (okay, not completely period, but you got the first step right. You can make it using a period jar, and I hope you have fun getting all creamy and buttery)
*a spoon and a jug of cold water
*2 wooden spoons or "Scotch Hands"
*4 ice cubes
*a bread board
*a container for your butter
*salt, if you wish

#Carefully pour the cream in to your jar, with your optional salt, screw down the lid tightly. Shake the jar vigorously for 15-20 minutes, or until the fat (butter) has separated from the liquid (buttermilk). Carefully pour off the buttermilk from the butter, using a spoon to keep the butter in the jar.
#Add half a pint of the cold water, screw the lid back on the jar and shake vigorously for a few minutes, to help remove more of the buttermilk. Pour off the liquid, and if necessary repeat washing the butter.
#Add the 4 ice cubes to the jar and shake until they have melted. Pour off the water from the melted ice cubes.
#Tip the butter out of the jar and squeeze it using the wooden spoons or scotch hands to remove more water and shape the butter. Place the finished butter in your container.

Mmmm.. pure buttery goodness.

And for even more tastiness, try apple butter! Huzzah!

Eggs are frequently used as a binding agent in period recipes. While redacting, you should keep in mind that eggs were smaller during period, and adjust the number of eggs accordingly. Alternatively, use bantam eggs. All sorts of eggs can be used in cooking, although the cholesterol content, and egg white:egg yolk ratio may vary depending on the egg. Duck and goose eggs are much larger than chicken eggs, and there is more yolk in them, so often on large duck or goose egg is equivalent to two small chicken eggs.

Eggs were also used as period hydrometers while brewing. The amount of egg visible above the liquid determined the density.

You can tell if an egg has gone rotten by placing it in a bowl of water: if it floats it is bad, if it sinks it is good. This is because when the egg starts to go off, a byproduct of this is gas which remains trapped in the egg, and thus it floats.

Eggs are often thought of as a short term product, but in fact can be stored for long periods of time, in a cool cellar, it is simply the very unpleasant smell of hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg gas) that makes many people unwilling to keep eggs long enough that any significant percentage has gone off. Coating eggs in vaseline will block the pores of the egg, increasing their longetivity to a point where many of your eggs are still good after a year. Vaseline (petroleum jelly) is obviously a modern product, but various waxes, tars, resins and glues were available in medieval times, although their useage may not have been recorded, even if used. Also The most efficient way to keep a good supply of eggs is to keep a few hens.
The way it was actually done "back then". People who try to pursue this goal are often referred to as "Authenticity Mavins" or "Authenticity Nazis", or "Authenticity Police", or some other such insulting terms.

In the SCA (as stated in Corpora), you must make an attempt at pre-16th century garb, although it's always nice to see people making an effort beyond this. There are several ways the SCA encourage authenticity, although the attitudes of some members (which are given the labels above) unfortunately can give the rest of the group a bad name.

How is authenticity encouraged in the SCA?
* College of Heralds - Full documentation is required to register your SCA name and device.
* Arts & Sciences - Authenticity is a criteria when judging A&S competitions. Normally documentation is required.
* Fighters - Well, although duct tape may still be used as strap substitutes, bike helmets are no longer permitted as legal armour, and most people wear a tabard over their pickle barrel armour bits.
* Dancing - Most SCA dance practices mostly teach period dances these days.
* Camping - More and more period pavilions are being seen at camping events.
* Feasts - Most feastocrats serve period food at events, and avoid using new world foods. (Yes, it's true: not all SCA food has to involve sultanas or cloves, and period food can taste good. Mmm.. what's better than a side of marinated roast lamb?!)

Elyas: modern eyeglasses

The term Period refers to the time-frame that a recreation group researchs, recreates and represents. This can vary from a small number of years (say 50) to more than a millenium (eg. the SCA).

The SCA period is anything prior to the 17th Century. This is includes what some may regard as the Dark Ages, the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Many people think that the SCA only covers the period from 600 AD to 1600AD, but Corpora states:
: <b>"Period: The era used by the Society as the base for its re-creation activities. The Society is based on the life and culture of the landed nobility of pre-17th Century Western Europe, focusing on the middle Ages and the Renaissance." </b>(Page 8)<br>
Anything that had been discovered or was in general usage during this time-frame is acceptable at SCA events, unless it breaks mundane law or would be considered offensive; so no burning heretics! The major exception to this guideline is religion - although it was the mainstay of the medieval era, anything overtly religious is avoided. No-one is going to complain if you dress as a monk, nun or inquisitor, but you will be jumped on if you try to hold a religious service in a public space. What you do in your tent or pavilion is nobody's business but those in the tent with you.

By contrast, if something was invented or only in general usage outside of the above time-frame, it is considered to be out of period (often abbreviated to OOP). For example, mobile phones are OOP, but lasagna is not. Items not known to non-european cultures, but known to cultures that had no contact with them, might be called out of period in SCA useage, often used in useage similar to "it's out of period, unless your persona comes from Japan".

In a special interest group, for example a mailing list for Xth Century Clothing, period may refer to the Xth Century, even if that list is labelled as an SCA mailing list. An item might also be considered out of period for a person's persona, for example potatoes are out of period for a 6th Century Scotsman, but might be in period (if rare) for a late 15th Century Elizabethan noble, however while some in the SCA might know this information about their persona, few would care to live under these restrictions for long at an event.

Some few items are essential for safe recreation, and their presence, although out of period, is automatically ignored.
Items like this include:
* eye glasses with modern frames
* medical aids
* safety equipement
* mundane sca paperwork and laws
* safety rules

Other items are considered by many to be "in period by consensus", as their omission of use would make life far more difficult and less fun. Some may crusade to remove these items for a more period look, but they will generally ruin the fun of many, with little impact on removal of the objects.
Such items include:
* duct tape
* coffee (for non eastern personas)
* cigarettes
* sunglasses
