An ornamental circlet, signifying the position of the wearer. Usually refers specifically to a circlet that indicates [[rank]] less than [[Royalty]], such as [[Princess]] of a [[principality]] or [[Baron]].

Historically, [[Sumptuary law|sumptuary laws]] often restricted the form and shape of a coronet. Many of those laws have been perpetuated in the [[SCA]]. For example:

Geographically, the '''Kingdom of Artemisia''' covers Montana, southern Idaho, most of Utah, and western Colorado and Wyoming. It became an [[SCA]] [[kingdom]] in [[A.S. XXXII]]. It was originally part of the [[Principality]] of [[Outlands|The Outlands]], but reverted to [[Atenveldt]] when Outlands became a kingdom in [[A.S. XXI]].

Artemisia is one of the smallest kingdoms by population (around a thousand) and covers a very large geographical area; close to 1000 miles separate the northernmost and southernmost groups, with similar distances between east and west. Many Artemisians are very geared toward long-distance travel, and it is not particularly unusual to find people daytripping to an event 200 miles away, even in winter storms.

The biggest event of the year is the Uprising War hosted by the Barony of 1000 Eyes, when around 800 Artemisians gather for five days in eastern Idaho. Uprising features armored and rapier melees (including bridge battles on an actual bridge and a continuously-improving castle), tournaments, an extensive set of classes on many topics, and various workshops.

Coronations are held in March and September, with Crown Tournament in the following month. Coronation sees the selection of the King's Champion, Queen's Champion, and Defender of the Sable Rose. The Bard of Artemisia and the Bearer of the Shield of Chivalry are selected at Crown Tournament, and the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Champion is selected at a special event in May. In recent years, the Kingdom Archery Championship and the Kingdom Equestrian Championship are held jointly, though the event moves around on the calendar.

While Artemisia has no Sumptuary Laws, it does have Sumptuary Customs that are contained within the Official Kingdom Law. Artemisia is unusual in that it totally prohibits metal circlets entirely -- only those entitled to wear [[coronet]]s (ie, those of Baronial, Viscounty, County, Duchy, or Royal rank) may wear bands of metal around their heads. This does not apply to color-contrast decoration on helms. Furthermore, chains of fealty and spurs (which may be silver or gold) are reserved for [[Knight]]s and are not worn by squires.

A '''belt''' is a length of some material, often [[leather]], cord or [[weaving|woven]] [[cloth]] worn around the waist. [[Metal]] belts are also known, such as the [[plaque belt]]s popular in the [[14th Century]].

Belts can be fastened in a wide variety of ways, using [[buckle]]s, rings and the like, or they could simply be tied. Many (some indicate the vast majority) of belts had [[strap end]]s of similar materials on the end of the belt.

Belts were used to gather [[clothing]], provide support for structures such as [[scabbard]]s, a [[dagger|knife]] [[sheaf]], a [[pouch]] or for adjusting clothing to keep it out of the weather.

Typical [[Viking]] belts were rarely greater than 25mm (1 inch), based on surviving [[buckle]]s and [[strap end]]s.

In the [[SCA]] a '''Master at Arms''' (alternately a '''Master of Arms''') is a [[peer]] of the [[Order of Chivalry]] who does not have to swear [[fealty]] to the [[throne]]. This is essentially the same as being a [[knight]], but a Master of Arms can choose whether or not to swear fealty and usually is addressed as "[[Master]]" rather than "[[Sir]]". Much like a female [[knight]] is addressed as [[Sir]], a female Master -at- Arms is addressed as [[Master]] rather than [[Mistress]] and is correctly referred to as such . The distribution between [[Knight]]s and Masters-at-Arms is subject to quite a bit of [[InterKingdom Anthropology|regional variation]], although in most [[Kingdom]]s, Knights greatly outnumber Masters.

Masters at arms wear a [[white baldric]] instead of a [[white belt]], spurs, and do not wear a [[chain]] of fealty unless they have sworn fealty.

The rank of Master at Arms was originally created because earlier SCA understandings of fealty held that Knights had to do whatever the Crown ordered, whether or not it was reasonable, sensible, or feasible. Over time it has also become a response to the very real concern that certain deserving individuals might restricted from the Chivalry because they could not swear the oaths, either from personal conviction or because of religious beliefs (i.e. the [[Jew|Jewish]] restriction on oath-swearing in the [[Kol Nidre]]), or because of persona reasons for those purists from cultures with no real equivalent position.

While theoretically equal in rank to a Knight, in some places Mastery of Arms is frowned upon by the local Chivalry and/or populace. There was a major incident involving this dichotomy early in The Kingdom of [[Atenveldt]] during its Principality days.

Geographically, the '''Kingdom of Artemisia''' covers Montana, southern Idaho, most of Utah, and western Colorado and Wyoming. It became an [[SCA]] [[kingdom]] in [[A.S. XXXII]]. It was originally part of the [[Principality]] of [[Outlands|The Outlands]], but reverted to [[Atenveldt]] when Outlands became a kingdom in [[A.S. XXI]].

Artemisia is one of the smallest kingdoms by population (around a thousand) and covers a very large geographical area; close to 1000 miles separate the northernmost and southernmost groups, with similar distances between east and west. Many Artemisians are very geared toward long-distance travel, and it is not particularly unusual to find people daytripping to an event 200 miles away, even in winter storms.

The biggest event of the year is the Uprising War hosted by the Barony of 1000 Eyes, when around 800 Artemisians gather for five days in eastern Idaho. Uprising features armored and rapier melees (including bridge battles on an actual bridge and a continuously-improving castle), tournaments, an extensive set of classes on many topics, and various workshops.

Coronations are held in March and September, with Crown Tournament in the following month. Coronation sees the selection of the King's Champion, Queen's Champion, and Defender of the Sable Rose. The Bard of Artemisia and the Bearer of the Shield of Chivalry are selected at Crown Tournament, and the Kingdom Arts and Sciences Champion is selected at a special event in May. In recent years, the Kingdom Archery Championship and the Kingdom Equestrian Championship are held jointly, though the event moves around on the calendar.

Geographically, the '''Kingdom of Artemisia''' covers Montana, southern Idaho, most of Utah, and western Colorado and Wyoming. It became an [[SCA]] [[kingdom]] in [[A.S. XXXII]]. It was originally part of the [[Principality]] of [[Outlands|The Outlands]], but reverted to [[Atenveldt]] when Outlands became a kingdom in [[A.S. XXI]].

Artemisia is one of the smallest kingdoms by population (around a thousand) and covers a very large geographical area; close to 1000 miles separate the northernmost and southernmost groups, with similar distances between east and west. Many Artemisians are very geared toward long-distance travel, and it is not particularly unusual to find people daytripping to an event 200 miles away, even in winter storms.

The biggest event of the year is the Uprising War hosted by the Barony of 1000 Eyes, when around 800 Artemisians gather for five days in eastern Idaho. Uprising features armored and rapier melees (including bridge battles on an actual bridge and a continuously-improving castle), tournaments, an extensive set of classes on many topics, and various workshops.

Coronations are held in March and September, with Crown Tournament in the following month.

== Early History ==

===Shire Years===
In early [[1977]], a group of folk at a Star Trek club meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah had a guest speaker. This person mentioned the [[Society for Creative Anachronism]]. One of the locals, Ms. Claire Spencer, had been to several SCA events in [[Germany]] during her tour of duty as an [[America]]n military service member. After the meeting, several participants met with Ms. Spencer and she shared what she knew with them.

Prior to March, 1977 ([[A.S. XI]]), this group met to plan a group in the Salt Lake City metro area. An undated piece of paper indicates the following:

About this time the group decided on a name for their fledgling [[shire]]. They chose [[Gaelic]] for reasons not [[documentation|documented]] and the name was “am Mor Salann Fasach�?. They later discovered that this was very bad Gaelic, and when the group was upgraded to [[Barony|Baronial]] status, they changed the name to “Loch Salann�? (literally “Salt Lake�?).

The first documented meeting occurred on March 13th, 1977 (still A.S. XI).

The first issue of The Questing Quill, the group’s official [[newsletter]] was published on 8 July 1977 ([[A.S. XII]]). Jerilyn of Vert Silva was the editor and publisher.

The group held several [[event]]s during the remainder of 1977 and [[1978]]. During this period members of the group would often travel to the nearest local groups for [[fighter practice]]s and events. [[Al-barran]] ([[Kingdom of the Outlands]]), which is Albuquerque, New Mexico was a common destination for the fledgling group.

The new group was extremely active and held or participated in an event or [[demo]] nearly every month in 1977 and 1978.

== Barony ==

The Shire of am Mor Salann Fasach became a Barony on December 30th, AS XIII (1978). Founding [[Baroness]] was Ferelith MacDonald (Claire Spencer) and her brother, [[Sir]] Robert de Spencer (Robert Spencer) was selected as Founding Baron. Regretfully, Claire moved to Vernal, Utah for a job opportunity and had to give up her role as Territorial Baroness. Her successor was Leah de Spencer (Leah Spencer), [[Baron]] Sir Robert’s wife and was [[investiture|invested]] at the Dragon Friend Tourney in Caer Ben Dragon (Ogden, Utah) on August 9, AS XV.

===Shire Years===
In early [[1977]], a group of folk at a Star Trek club meeting in Salt Lake City, Utah had a guest speaker. This person mentioned the [[Society for Creative Anachronism]]. One of the locals, Ms. Claire Spencer, had been to several SCA events in [[Germany]] during her tour of duty as an [[America]]n military service member. After the meeting, several participants met with Ms. Spencer and she shared what she knew with them.

Prior to March, 1977 ([[A.S. XI]]), this group met to plan a group in the Salt Lake City metro area. An undated piece of paper indicates the following:

About this time the group decided on a name for their fledgling [[shire]]. They chose [[Gaelic]] for reasons not [[documentation|documented]] and the name was “am Mor Salann Fasach�?. They later discovered that this was very bad Gaelic, and when the group was upgraded to [[Barony|Baronial]] status, they changed the name to “Loch Salann�? (literally “Salt Lake�?).

The first documented meeting occurred on March 13th, 1977 (still A.S. XI).

The first issue of The Questing Quill, the group’s official [[newsletter]] was published on 8 July 1977 ([[A.S. XII]]). Jerilyn of Vert Silva was the editor and publisher.

The group held several [[event]]s during the remainder of 1977 and [[1978]]. During this period members of the group would often travel to the nearest local groups for [[fighter practice]]s and events. [[Al-barran]] ([[Kingdom of the Outlands]]), which is Albuquerque, New Mexico was a common destination for the fledgling group.

The new group was extremely active and held or participated in an event or [[demo]] nearly every month in 1977 and 1978.

== Barony ==

The Shire of am Mor Salann Fasach became a Barony on December 30th, AS XIII (1978). Founding [[Baroness]] was Ferelith MacDonald (Claire Spencer) and her brother, [[Sir]] Robert de Spencer (Robert Spencer) was selected as Founding Baron. Regretfully, Claire moved to Vernal, Utah for a job opportunity and had to give up her role as Territorial Baroness. Her successor was Leah de Spencer (Leah Spencer), [[Baron]] Sir Robert’s wife and was [[investiture|invested]] at the Dragon Friend Tourney in Caer Ben Dragon (Ogden, Utah) on August 9, AS XV.
