Mary Rose

The Mary Rose was a carrack warship in the service of King Henry VIII's royal navy.

The construction of the Mary Rose began in 1510 in Portsmouth and she was launched in July 1511. She was then towed to London and fitted with rigging and decking, and supplied with armaments. Other than the structural details needed to sail, stock and arm the Mary Rose, she was also equipped with flags, banners and streamers that were either painted or gilded.

She was sunk in 1545 when she turned to present her guns at another ship and she dipped taking in water through her open gun ports and then floundering and sinking.

Hiya! Sekanjabin is an unusual case because it would certainly classify as a cordial in period - a syrupy medicinal potion - but our modern usage is that of a beverage. I've made some good variations with spice and some fruit flavorings. I suspect any syrup in a well-sealed bottle would be great for field-expedient soft drinks at events. When I get time I'll do a bit on rosa solis which I researched for an A&S even last year.

I marked [[Mixed battles]] as RPOV for two reasons. First, the term itself seems to be a regional usage - at Pennsic for instance battles usually are designated as, eg. "with combat archery" not as "mixed battle." Second, it has some embedded terms which are also regional; specifically the terminology of "light fighter" and the specificity with which it talks about how to kill "lights." Again, using Pennsic as a high-profile example, the combat archery is full-contact (although folks can always just declare themselves dead, of course).

This is one thing I have been trying to correct for a number of years (one the Lochac pages as well) - it is "Lochac Cooks' Guild" have the scroll with signatures on it somewhere in the files - we did the whole presentation of charter and 1st kingdom.

I had actually made this change previously here - and yes I've been a bit slack - need to edit the charter and put in the proper mentions. Nicolette - I go by the name on the paperwork I have on file - but I will double check what I have.

Rubber Band Gun

A Rubber Band Gun, commonly abbreviated to "RBG", is a type of gun sometimes used in rapier fighting in the [[SCA]]

The weapon can be made of wood and is designed to resemble period firearms in most cases. The RBG fires "Rubber Bands" frequently made from surgical tubing.

The RBG is in general used during rapier melee's and is by convention a single shot weapon, reloads are sometimes allowed during battles but this is the discretion of the Marshal.

[[Duke|His Grace]] Michael of Bedford is a [[Knight]] and a [[Duke]] within the [[SCA]]. He [[reign]]ed as [[King]] in the [[East Kingdom]] on 18th October, [[1980]] ([[A.S. XV]]). Shortly thereafter Duke Michael became [[Atlantia|Kingdom of Atlantia]]'s first King and was crowned on 2nd May, [[1981]] ([[A.S. XVI]]). Since then Duke Michael has went on to [[reign]] eight more times. Duke Michael is also a [[triple peer]]; a [[Knight]], [[Laurel]] and [[Pelican]].

Duke Michael also won Atlantian Fall Crown Tourney 2010 which will make him the [[King]] during Atlantia's 30th Anniversary. This is a rare (if unknown) occurance of someone becoming [[King]] 30 years after his first Crown.

The [[Bedford Points Tournament|Bedford Points]] [[tournament style]] was named after him.

If you read into any of the literature you will find strong warnings about this everywhere. This plant is extremely [[poison]]ous. They were aware of its dangerous properties in period, and such it was given names such as devils berries, devils herb, divale, and naughty man's cherries.

It was widely dispersed across central and southern [[Europe]], growing a few feet high. The dark green leaves grow 3-10 inches long and have a bitter taste.

The entire [[plant]] (particularly leaves and roots) contains [[Atropine]], which is a poisonous alkaloid. It's reputed as being the plant that poisoned the troops of [[Marcus Antonius]] during the [[Parthian wars]]. Its use is also revealed in stories of when [[Duncan I]] was King of [[Scotland]], the [[soldier]]s of Macbeth poisoned a whole army of invading [[Danes]] by a liquor mixed with an infusion of Belladonna supplied to them during a truce, and were murdered in their sleep by the [[Scotland|Scots]]. The plant is also well reputed with witches of the time and was an ingredient in many hallucinogenic concoctions and ointments.

The name ''Belladonna'', which translates as Beautiful Lady in [[Italy|Italian]], refers to a bizarre custom in which Italian women would drop the sap of the plant into their eye to dilate the pupils, in order to make them appear more attractive. The reason for doing this is that when we see something we like, our pupils dilate. At a subconscious level we notice when someone else's eyes are dilated and would interpret this as a sign that they are attracted to us. Obviously, this would make them attractive to us.
