'''DOWNTIME NOTICE''' -- cunnan.sca.org.au will be down for some period of time this weekend as I move things to the new consolidated sca.org.au server. More information pasted here when I have details. -Del-

Welcome to [[Cunnan]], a [[Wiki]] collecting information for [[re-enactor]]s of the [[Middle Ages]] and [[Renaissance]] with a heavy slant towards members of the [[SCA]].

[[Cunnan]] is believed to be the largest [[SCA]]-related wiki in the world but anyone can edit our articles. You should '''be bold in updating pages!''' Articles can only be improved if people are contributing new information and improving old information. So add research information, how-to pages, [[event]] information and anything else you can think of. Cunnan should be applicable worldwide, so be mindful of [[Cunnan:Regional_point_of_view|regional differences]] - use comments such as "In [[Lochac]]...". If you see anything that is different in your area, add a note on your local variation.<br>
'''Magna Carta''':
The Magna Carta or Great Charter was a formal record of an agreement between [[King]] [[John Lackland|John]] of [[England]] and a rebellious group of [[baron]]s, sealed on 15 June 1215, at Runneymede meadow, outside Windsor.
Four copies remain of a series sent out to [[sheriff]]s for public dissemination. The Charter was annulled by [[Pope]] [[Innocent III]].

On 12 November 1216 the Charter was re-issued in the name of the 9-year-old [[Henry III]] by his [[regent]]s, with certain clauses omitted.

'''Abeyance''' is a state of "inactivity" for SCA [[groups]]. A group in abeyance is not considered an official SCA group for various purposes -- it cannot hold events, cannot have a bank account (if it has one then it cannot access it), it cannot receive royal patronage, it is not listed in Pegasus, etc.

A group can be placed into abeyance for one of several reasons:

* It doesn't have sufficient members to continue. For example, most or all of the members have moved away from the area.
* It has failed to produce sufficient reports -- for example if the [[seneschal]] of a group has not reported for some time then the [[Kingdom]] [[Seneschal]] can put the group into abeyance.
* It has failed to produce end of year financial reports. In this case the group will be placed into abeyance by the SCA Treasurer. This form of abeyance lasts until the end of the next financial year.
* A group cannot find the appropriate officers. For example, a [[shire]] must have 3 officers, and a [[barony]] must have 6. Usually a group will not be placed into abeyance until continued efforts have failed to find people to do these offices.

Abeyance usually lasts until the situation has been resolved. For example, reports have started to arrive in a timely manner.

As opposed to '''abeyance''', a college group can be made [[dormant]] if it does not have sufficient members. For example, the university students have left and/or graduated, and new students aren't found to run the club. A college group that is made [[dormant]] can be reactivated by any 5 new student members who wish to re-found the student club and re-start the [[college]].

The following is a list of [[groups]] within the [[Kingdom of Lochac]]

You can obtain an up to date list here:

http://www.sca.org.au/lochac/groups/groups.php

This list is taken from a database maintained by the [[Kingdom]] [[Seneschal]] and also contains up to date lists of group contacts. Furthermore, the database contains a mapping from [[Australia]]n groups to Postcodes so that you can enter your postcode or suburb name into the web form and it will tell you what group you belong to.

Some interesting fluff about groups in the [[Kingdom of Lochac]]:

* All groups have a set of postcodes assigned, except groups in [[New Zealand]] and colleges. The [[registrar]]'s database uses the same mapping so that your membership card will have the correct group on it based on your postcode.
* [[New Zealand]] groups are assigned by telephone area code.
* [[College]]s are assigned by personal choice -- if you say on your membership form that you're in a college then that's what the [[registrar]] will put on your membership card and that's what the [[Kingdom]] [[Seneschal]] will assign your membership to.
* If you belong to a college then you also count towards the membership of the group in which you live (not the group where the college is based), so that if you live in Arrowsreach but are a member of St Monicas then your membership will count towards Arrowsreach and not Krae Glas.

Membership assignment to groups is important -- to count as an official group, a [[shire]], [[canton]], or [[college]] must have 5 members and a [[barony]] must have 25. Note that as of October 2004 all members, including family and associate members, count towards group numbers.
=== sca.org.au documentation ===

Just wondering whether cunnan might be a useful place to store the documentation that I have started to put together for the databases and stuff on sca.org.au? This includes the new registry & groups database, and the events database (currently mentioned on the Arrowsreach wiki, but plan to start coding on it soon).

Specifically, neither the FAQ nor the policy document says what sort of articles are OK to put on Cunnan. The front page says it's a medieval & renaissance wiki with an SCA slant but that doesn't really cover it in my opinion. The SCA covers lots of areas, and there probably could be a lot of stuff added here about SCA administration, etc, but it isn't really related to the middle ages or renaissance.

Also, a side note, sca.org.au is going to get an OS upgrade sometime during October. That will mean things like a new PHP version, a new version of Apache (from 1.3 to 2.0) etc. Keep an eye on the site mailing list for annoucements.

[[User:Del|Del]]

: My view is that this is a beginner's encyclopaedia to the [[Middle Ages]]. It is being written with the knowledge that [[recreationist]]s are the main users. A decision had obviously been made in the past that the pages were allowed to relate the historical data specifically to how the [[SCA]] is played. This has been expanded by writers (like me) into pages that are specifically on how the SCA runs (cf. [[Board of Directors]] etc). I helped here to reduce the ambiguity of SCA jargon between branches and help define the roles of [[officer]]s etc for those outside the offices. However, I still feel that the main purpose of [[Cunnan]] should be basic historical information. While it could be used as an SCA database, that should not swamp the rest of the system. This is especially important if the SCA stuff was just relating to one [[Kingdom]], not the SCA as a whole. - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 14:53, 2 Aug 2004 (EST)

:I think general SCA information would be no problem but Kingdom specific info would only clutter things up, IMO. There are enough people asking why we do SCA and general medieval info as it is. Maybe we should consider forking into two wikis eventually (I think it'll be a long time before this is actually needed though) - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 16:01, 8 Aug 2004 (EST)

=== Another upgrade ===
Those of you who contribute to the Wikipedia will have noticed that over the past few days it has undergone a major facelift as well as having a major feature upgrade. Once the software settles down and the new version is released to the public I will install it here. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 10:43, 1 Jun 2004 (EST)

:The upgrade is now complete. I apologize for the abruptness of the upgrade but there was a problem with the old software (I would have had to reinstall it or install this newer version). The new interface can be customized and we will have category support again.

:As always you should report any problems here. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 18:14, 8 Jun 2004 (EST)

Uploading has been disabled. Was this deliberate, or is it as a result of the upgrade? [[User:Conrad Leviston|Conrad Leviston]] 00:11, 10 Jun 2004 (EST)

:It was deliberate (and done on account of the upgrade). I've re-enabled uploads now. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 01:14, 10 Jun 2004 (EST)

=== Information taken from Wikipedia ===
I've noticed that Cunnan is listed on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Copies_of_Wikipedia_content_%28low_degree_of_compliance%29 (under SCA wiki). I think that we are listed on the wrong page since we meet the criteria for moderate compliance but that is beside the point. We really should do something about this when we come across articles of our that are copied from the Wikipedia. Just adding "Some of this articles content were taken from the Wikipedia article at ''http://whateverurl''" would be sufficient. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 10:43, 1 Jun 2004 (EST)

=== re/moving misspelt page titles ===

Hi,
I have noticed that there is a page for Pavillions. This is a misspelling of Pavilions and while I have corrected all the words inside the page, I don't know how to move the filename. The only way I know is to make a new Pavilions page and redirect Pavillions to it but I am not happy to do this.

Please advise,

Cian, the spelling pedant.

:If you are logged in (which you seem to be). You can move a page by clicking the "move" link. It should be along the top of the article (if you are using the new design) or in the left hand set of menus (if you are using the old design). You'll be asked where to move the page to and the old version will be turned into a redirect. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] (PS writing <nowiki>~~~</nowiki> will automatically sign your name on talk pages)

=== Yet another upgrade ===
There will be a minor version upgrade tonight (sorry about the short notice). There will be no (big) cosmetic changes this time just a few bug-fixes. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 19:15, 8 Jul 2004 (EST)

:Done. If anything explodes mention it here. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 20:13, 8 Jul 2004 (EST)

:Grrr, I broke special characters again. Fixed again. I'll update the database to UTF-8 soon so that this doesn't keep happening. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 20:36, 8 Jul 2004 (EST)
===Copying from Wikipedia?===

Is it OK to copy articles from Wikipedia to add here? I would of course put the Wikipedia legal stuff on the copied content. I am not sure if this fits this community so I thought I would ask. [[User:Sir Michael|Sir Michael]] 22:22, 30 Jul 2004 (EST)

: Copying from the Wikipedia is fine '''if''' you add something like "Some of this article's content were taken from the Wikipedia article at http://whateverurl". - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 23:11, 30 Jul 2004 (EST)

===New Article===

I am planning on writing an article on libraries in Europe during the [[middle ages]]. I will probably take some info from Wikipedia and add stuff from my own knowledge of library history. Where should I add the internal links? I don't want to orphan this article. I think [[education]] and [[university]] are good starts. Are there others? Thanks. [[User:Sir Michael|Sir Michael]] 11:34, 8 Aug 2004 (EST)

:There are probably others but you can always add links from them after you have written your new article. Its also perfectly acceptable to add "See also" type links to the end of related articles.

:Wikis grow chaotically but in the long run they sort themselves out. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 16:12, 8 Aug 2004 (EST)

:: I see nothing wrong with searching Cunnan for instances of "library" or "libraries". If even slightly relevant, then make it [[library]]. That and the random page button is how I find most pages I read. - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]] 10:35, 9 Aug 2004 (EST)

=== Admin Nominations ===
I'd like to nomiate [[User:Cian|Cian]] for adminship and [[User:Tiff|Tiff]] and [[User:Conrad Leviston|Conrad Leviston]] for promotion to bureaucrats (admins that can create other admins). If no one objects I'll do this sometime next week.

Its probably also time we looked at a better system of nominating admins (it seems like a bad idea to keep leaving these things to a single person). - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 10:33, 17 Aug 2004 (EST)

:I think having a nomination and a seconder from those with at least admin levels is probably ideal. Give a week's lead time in case there are objections (unlikely in the near future), and if there are objections have a vote.

:Oh, yeah, and I second Cian. [[User:Conrad Leviston|Conrad Leviston]] 18:49, 18 Aug 2004 (EST)

=== Subcategories ===
I have created a new category [[:category:armour]] and I have also created [[:category:SCA armour]]. I would like to make the second a subcategory of the first. How do I do that? - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]]
Subcategories are added to to parent categories in the same way that articles are. Edit [[:category:SCA armour]] and add <nowiki>[[Category:Armour]]</nowiki> to the text. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

=== Spammers ===
I've been seeing this happen a lot recently. Has the chinese spammer always been a problem, or just recently? Can we ban them for more than a month, somewhere around indefinitely?- [[User:WanderingSpy| WanderingSpy]]
*The bans only work if they keep the same IP address. Admins can ban them for 100 years if we want to, but if the IP address changes every time they get online, then we might be preventing someone who is quite decent making any modifications. That's right isn't it Tobin? - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]]

::That's right, banning them for even 1 month is pointless (but it usually stops them from coming back more than once a day). It is also possible for us to block a range of IP addresses in one go but that would make us even more likely to stop a legitimate user from contributing.

::You can see all the bans we currently have using [[Special:Ipblocklist]].

::I'm looking into setting things up so that any external link in China (ending in .cn) will be treated as spam and not saved. I don't think we're likely to link to Chinese sites.- [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

:::I've activated the wiki's antispam checker. Edits will now be checked for known spam links. If new spam makes it through bring it to my attention and I'll update the list. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 10:41, 10 Sep 2004 (EST)

::: I've also unblocked the 131,081 (this number is correct) IP addresses I had banned. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 17:03, 10 Sep 2004 (EST)

=== Server move ===
You have probably noticed that Cunnan has changed to a different server. This was done because the wiki was placing to great a strain upon [[User:Del|Del]]'s primary work machine (Cunnan only exists because of Del's generosity). Most features have been re-enabled and things should work as expected.

If you see Del at an event you might like to thank him for dealing with the whole situation as kindly and quickly as he did.

I had also turned off the anti-spam filter, it has now been reactivated. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]
:There will be a few hours downtime as Cunnan moves to its final home on Wednesday 10th November. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 16:35, 8 Nov 2004 (EST)
*Umm... how about fixing the machine's time because I sure wasn't working on Cunnan at 5 o'clock this morning. - [[User:Cian|Cian Gillebhrath]]

Hi all,

Here's what's happened and why:

* Some time back in August I noted that cunnan was placing somewhat of a strain on sca.org.au (volta). I didn't bother doing anything at the time because I was heading off to Pennsic.
* In early October I had a major project happening on volta due to a big government tender that was due. volta is also my main work server so I needed to move cunnan. I set up a temporary machine at my office and moved cunnan to it, this was what caused the site address to change (to cunnan.sca.org.au) because it was no longer on the same machine as the rest of www.sca.org.au. Unfortunately this was only ever going to be a temporary thing because the machine I moved it to (galliard) is a "project" server used for software development work and testing. Also galliard is on a fairly low speed link -- 512K/512K whereas volta is on a 10Mb link.
* Last week I moved it again, to a server that I lease in the USA. It's a server (cascarda) that I use for US based clients and has a 100Mb link but bandwidth over there is much cheaper. It also has more memory (1GB) and CPU (3GHz) than volta (256/600MHz). There it's going to stay I'm afraid -- cunnan has become a victim of its own success and it's no longer economical for me to provide sufficient grunt for it to run or bandwidth for all of its traffic in Australia.

So the machine is now in a different time zone -- US "Central Standard Time" (CST) which is 6 hours behind GMT, or 16 hours behind Australian Eastern Standard time, or 17 hours behind Sydney/Melbourne summer time. Of course it will also have daylight savings at a different time of the year.

I don't know much about the wikipedia code or why its dates are out, but I assume that if it was set up on the assumption it was running on Australian EST (GMT+10) it now needs to be told it's running at CST or GMT-6 instead.

Yes, all of my servers are named after [[Renaissance Dance]]s.

=== sca.org.au documentation ===

Just wondering whether cunnan might be a useful place to store the documentation that I have started to put together for the databases and stuff on sca.org.au? This includes the new registry & groups database, and the events database (currently mentioned on the Arrowsreach wiki, but plan to start coding on it soon).

:Specifically, neither the FAQ nor the policy document says what sort of articles are OK to put on Cunnan.

Just adding "Some of this articles content were taken from the Wikipedia article at ''http://whateverurl''" would be sufficient. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 10:43, 1 Jun 2004 (EST)
Hi,
I have noticed that there is a page for Pavillions. This is a misspelling of Pavilions and while I have corrected all the words inside the page, I don't know how to move the filename. The only way I know is to make a new Pavilions page and redirect Pavillions to it but I am not happy to do this.

The Rowany Festival (sometimes called just "Festival") is [[Australia]]'s largest [[SCA]] [[event]]. Currently, it is held at the [[Crossroads]] [[medieval]] village. Anything that people do in the SCA (well, most things) will be on display in some form or other at Rowany Festival.

Festival happens every Easter long weekend - don't miss it for the world.

For more info, check out the website - http://www.sca.org.au/rowany/festival/

===Religious observance===
If religious reasons are inclined to slow down your attendance at an event over Easter, don't forget that a group of Christians generally get together in a discrete place to hold a scheduled Easter Sunday mass. And if Pesach falls at the same time of year, I'm sure there will be people cooking in accordance with customs - it's actually easier to avoid leavening agents in period cooking.

(Just so people are aware -- very occasionally, when Pesach does fall during Easter, a seder is held at the festival site. Contact [[User:Del]] if you want to be included in this).
Hrmm... so you're coming along and don't know what to take? Perhaps you need a [[camping list]]?
===The history of Rowany Festival===
Rowany Festival officially came into being in [[1983]] ([[A.S. XVII]]), when it ran for four days, and cost $40. The [[2004]] Rowany Festival ran for six days, and cost a little more.

Rowany Festival has had three different locations - Fairholme Park in Wilton,
The '''Kingdom of Lochac''' comprises all [[SCA]] [[groups]] in [[Australia]] and [[New Zealand]] (as of Lochac [[May Crown]], [[2003]]).

The Australian groups were previously the [[Principality of Lochac]], part of the [[Kingdom of the West]]. The New Zealand groups were formerly part of the [[Kingdom of Caid]].

The name Lochac comes from the writings of [[Marco Polo]], where he catalogs the lands to the south. Lochac is described as a land south of Java with a sovereign king. Late sixteenth century maps can be found with Luchac, Beach and Maletur forming part of a large mainland area in the position of [[Western Australia]].

When the [[SCA]] groups in a region fulfill [[kingdom|certain criteria]] (as specified by [[Corpora]]), they can become a [[kingdom]], provided sufficient [[member]]s wish to do so. This occurred in [[Australia]] in July [[2002]].

Lochac's [[Crown tournament]]s occur during May and November, and [[Coronation]]s occur in January ([[12th Night]]) and July ([[Midwinter]]). See [[bidding for a crown event]] if you or your group is interested in hosting one of these events.

As of July [[2004]], the [[seneschal]] of the Kingdom of Lochac is [[Delbert von Strassburg]] and the [[King]] and [[Queen]] are [[Draco]] and [[Serena]].

Literally -- '''humanism''' from the latin ''studia humanitatis'' -- or studies of the human mind and form. '''Humanism''' was denoted as such (the study of man) to distinguish itself from the earlier forms of [[scholasticism]] -- or the study of God and the works of God, eg: the [[bible]], etc. Humanism advocated the intellectual development of man without direction from God, through [[secular]] learning and the study of [[classical]] [[literature]]. It is precisely the thoughts of humanism which tipped off the later [[Reformation]] movements. See [[Humanists and the Reformation]] for opinions on this.

'''Humanism''' began its rise amongst the writers of the [[14th century]] in [[Italy]], and sparked off a movement that became the [[Renaissance]]. The earliest humanists were authors such as [[Boccaccio]] (1313-75) who composed the [[Decameron]] -- the first modern, [[secular]] short story collection. Another [[14th century]] humanist was the poet [[Petrarch]] (1304-74), who translated and studied the works of [[Cicero]] and promoted the [[secular]] learning of the early [[Greek]]s.

The study of '''humanism''' began by the focus on the three forms of the [[Trivium]] -- [[grammar]], [[rhetoric]], and [[logic]], as well as the study of [[poetics]], in particular the [[classical]]. Initially these forms were all studied from the [[classical]], and in particular the [[Greek]] world -- the movement of [[Byzantine]] scholars to [[Italy]] from around 1400 where they taught the [[Greek language]] enabled scholars to study [[classical]] [[Greek]] texts in their original language, and to perform many [[translations]].

Study of the [[classical]] [[Greek]] (and hence [[pagan]]) writers had been, prior to '''humanism''' not been popular. For example, the [[scholastics]] of the [[12th century]] and [[13th century]] had become too absorbed in [[theology]] according to the [[humanists]], and therefore overlooked the wisdom of the [[ancient]]s -- this was the greatest criticism of the [[scholastics]] by the [[humanists]]. As a counter to this, [[humanists]] taught [[ethics]] rather than [[theology]].

Because the [[Greek]]s, and thus the [[humanists]] had on their side many of the great [[philosopher]]s, which the [[scholastics]] chose to ignore, the [[humanists]] saw the [[scholastics]] as having a rigid, formalistic, aged and unproper way of doing [[philosophy]].

The [[Platonic academy]] was established in [[Florence, Italy]] in around 1440 specifically to promote the study of [[Greek language]] works, and in particular the [[philosophy]] and other works of [[Plato]] and others.

This rise in the study of [[Greek]] and other (eg: [[Latin]]) secular texts during the [[15th century]] gave Humanism the ability to edge-out its competitive form, [[scholasticism]] in the universities. Important secular humanists from [[Italy]] such as [[Ficino]], [[Pico della Mirandola]] and [[Lorenzo Valla]] promoted humanism as a world-wide movement. The first humanist [[pope]], [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pope_Nicholas_V Nicholas V] was the founder of Rome's [[Vatican Library]], one of the world's most important (at the time) collections of humanist literature.

By the end of the [[15th century]], humanism, and in its wake the [[Renaissance]] had become established throughout the main centers of [[Europe]]. One of the world's most important [[humanists]] of his day, [[Erasmus]] (1469? - 1536), was born in [[Holland]] and travelled widely throughout [[Europe]], including Italy and England. One of [[Erasmus]]' great works, [[The Praise of Folly]] was translated into almost every language, including English, by the end of the [[17th century]].

There are a few '''Languages''' that are of interest to people in the [[SCA]]. Most notably [[French]], [[Old English]] and [[Latin]]. Most members of the SCA speak [[English]].

Languages change over time and there exists the opinion that schools should follow this change. In fact the opposite is true, schools should help slow or arrest changes to languages as lingual consistency makes communication with our past possible (albeit that communication is one way). The article on [[Old English]] gives some example of the gradual changes to [[English]].

== Language Groups ==

There are two main language groups found in [[Europe]], and several smaller groups, or isolated languages. The main groups are:

* The [[Indo-European]] language group.
* The [[Finno-Ugric]] language group.

Other languages found in Europe during the [[Middle Ages]] include:

* The [[Western Mediterranean]] language group.
* The [[Semitic]] language group.
* The [[Hamitic]] language group.
* The [[Caucasian]] language group.

=== [[Indo-European]] languages ===

The [[Indo-European]] language group, or more properly group of language groups, comprises the following sub-groups:

* [[Teutonic]] languages, such as [[Norse]], [[German]], [[English]] (including [[Old English]], [[Anglo-Saxon]], etc), [[Danish]], [[Swedish]], etc.
* [[Celtic]] languages, such as [[Breton]], [[Welsh]], [[Gaelic]], etc.
* [[Italic]] and [[Romance]] languages, such as [[Italian]], [[French]] and its dialects (including [[Waloon]], [[Provencal]], etc), [[Spanish]], etc. Most of these languages are derived from [[Latin]] or its ancestral [[Thraco-Phrygian]] languages. Also included in this group is [[Romanian]] -- it's interesting to find an essentially western european language hiding in eastern Europe, but there's a story to that.
* [[Greek]] and [[Illyrian]] which are also off-shoots of the same [[Thraco-Phrygian]] language group that gave birth to [[Latin]] and the [[Romance]] language groups
* [[Hittite]], an [[ancient]] language of [[Asia Minor]] which is also a descendant of the [[Thraco-Phrygian]] languages.
* [[Baltic]] languages, such as [[Lithuanian]] and [[Latvian]] or [[Lettish]] (but not [[Estonian]]).
* [[Slavonic]] languages, the most widespread throughout eastern europe, including [[Russian]], [[Polish]], [[Serbian]], [[Croat]], [[Ukrainian]], etc. The [[Baltic]] and [[Slavonic]] languages are distantly related, but distinct enough to form separate language groups.

There are enough similarities between all of the [[Indo-European]] languages to tie them together -- for example they are all [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inflected_language Inflectional languages], which means that the structure of a word changes form to indicate its grammatical function. e.g. in [[English]] ''who'', ''whose'', and ''whom'' are inflected nominative, genitive, and accusative forms of the same word (although [[English]] is not a highly inflectional language -- most of the [[Slavonic]] languages are much more inflectional).

=== [[Finno-Ugric]] languages ===

The [[Finno-Ugric]] language group is a much smaller group than [[Indo-European]]. It evolved from the ancient [[Finnish]] languages which have existed from the stone age in the forests of Finland and northern Europe.

The main languages in the [[Finno-Ugric]] group are:

* [[Finnish]]
* [[Hungarian]] (or [[Magyar]])
* [[Estonian]]

Yes, the spread of these languages is interesting. The [[Magyar]]s were originally a northern steppe tribe descended from the Finns

The [[Finno-Ugric]] languages are all [http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agglutinative Agglutinative language]s, which mean that they use prefixes and suffixes to indicate the grammatical role of the words. Note that the [[Turkic]] and other [[Steppe]] languages such as [[Mongol]]ian are also agglutinative and have many similar grammatical structures, which seems to indicate a connection between these language groups, possibly a very [[ancient]] connection.

=== [[Semitic]] and [[Hamitic]] languages ===

It is worth considering these together as they almost form a combined group. The [[Hamitic]] languages are as closely related to [[Semitic]] as they are to each other.

The main languages in these groups are [[Hebrew]], [[Arabic]] and in earlier times [[Aramaic]] and the various north [[Africa]]n and [[Egypt]]ian languages.

The common theme amongst these languages is that they all exhibit a pattern of root words consisting of three consonants, with vowel changes, prefixes, and suffixes used to inflect them. For instance, in Hebrew:

* gdl means "big" but is no part of speech and not a word, just a root
* gadol means "big" and is an adjective
* gidel means "he magnified"
* magdelet means "magnifier" (lens)

The languages all have alphabets (eg: the [[Hebrew]] alphabet, or alef-bet), which contain a set of consonants, with the vowels written around, under, following, or above the consonants. They are written right-to-left, rather than left-to-right as in [[English]].

=== [[Western Mediterranean]] languages ===

Probably the most interesting group of languages from a scholar's point of view, but the least widespread, the [[Western Mediterranean]] language group ''arguably'' includes the following languages:

* [[Basque]]
* [[Etruscan]]
* The language in use on the isle of [[Lemnos]] in the [[Aegean]] sea.
* Old [[Caledonian]]

There are many theories on the relationship between these languages, and many difficulties involved in analysing them (mostly because nobody speaks [[Etruscan]] or the [[Aegean]] language any more, and we can't read the surviving inscriptions in this language). It is possible that the language group was more widespread in neolithic times, but was pushed out by the arrival of the [[Indo-European]]s.

=== [[Caucasian]] languages ===

Another interesting one to study -- the main surviving language of this group is [[Georgia]]n. It is also interesting to note that [[Georgia]]n has very similar language structure to [[Basque]], indicating that [[Georgia]]n and the other (minor) [[Caucasian]] languages were originally part of the [[Western Mediterranean]] group -- indicating a further fragment of the ancient tribe that was dispersed by the [[Indo-European]]s.

The '''Italian Renaissance''' was something of a fad among [[Italian]] princes and [[merchant]] princes for blowing huge chunks of the family fortune on nice [[art]], country [[houses]] and general good living.

This was fundamentally brought on by a lack of good other places to put your [[money]], due to a sustained commercial crisis combining a [[trade|trading]] depression in the [[Mediterranean]] and a fall in interest rates (down to 0.25% pa in [[Florence]]).

The period also saw a 'culture war' between the [[Humanists]] and the [[Scholastics]], and as the [[Humanists]] concentrated on winning the argument rather than having their facts and logic straight, they successfully painted the 'moderns' (ie the [[Scholastics]]) as backward relics of the dark medieval era and the [[Humanists]] therefore got all the cool jobs as [[Court Poets]], [[Historians]] and so on.

The combination of the physical evidence of the changes in [[fashion]] evident in the new art, styles of houses and so on, combined with the documentary "evidence" of the polemics of the [[Humanists]] caused it to be mistaken for an intermediate period between the medieval and modern worlds by [[nineteenth century]] historians (especially [[Burckhardt]]). [[Medievalist]]s are still trying to repair the damage.

A few very basic facts:

*Unlike [[English]] it is written right-to-left. So that the first word of the sentence is in the on the right hand margin of the page, not the left hand margin.
The comment here isn't entirely correct. Hebrew, like all other [[semitic]] [[language]]s has specific grammar rules -- all words with the same basic consonant structure are derived from the same root word (verb or noun). So even without the vowels it should be much easier to translate [[semitic]] languages than [[English]]. N nglsh mssng t th vwls s bg prblm. iN HeBReW iT iS LeSS oF a PRoBLeM.</small></div>All of the letters are consonants. There are 22 of them. Vowels are written as a series of dots, dashes, and other marks underneath, or (less commonly) above the letters. One of the consonants (v equivalent) changes its type to a vowel if a dot is written in (o) or above (oo) it. In older Hebrew texts vowels may be unclear or ommitted completely leading to occasional debatable points in translations, especially when performed by those with less bilingual skill or less access to other texts from an era for comparison (such as would be the case more often in medieval times).
*Books in '''Hebrew''' are reversed, so that what [[English]] speakers would call the back of the book is the front of the book in '''Hebrew'''. Or, to look at it another way, a '''Hebrew''' book closed on the table in front of you has the opening on the left, rather than right, side.
*The earliest editions of the [[old testament]] of the [[Bible]] were written in '''Hebrew'''.

Your '''persona''' is your alternate name, or [[SCA name]] which people refer to you as in the society. It may come from a particular place (e.g. [[Ireland]] or [[Germany]]) and/or time (e.g. [[12th century]]), and you can create a story behind your persona. Some like to [[dress]] in the style of their persona, so if they have an Italian name, they may choose to wear Italian [[garb]] or [[armour]], and have an Italian-style [[device]].

Then again, there's the other type of people who simply have an [[SCA name]], wear whatever clothes they like, have a device that doesn't match their persona, and cover a whole range of time periods, and that is perfectly fine and acceptable too. The SCA doesn't care. It's entirely up to '''you''' how you play the game.
One noticeable exception is the story of the Buddha. It was told along the trade routes that made there way west. By the time it reached Europe it had mutated into the story of Barlaam and Josaphat. Josaphat is the name Buddha was given, having been derived from Boddhisatva, or he who shall become Buddha. Barlaam was a Christian monk who aided Josaphat in his conversion.
The story became well enough known in Europe for Josaphat to be recognised in the thirteenth century ''Golden Legend'' or Live of Saints. In the [[16th century]] the Buddha became a fully canonised saint with a feast day on the 27th of November. By the [[19th century]] however the link between the story of Josaphat and Buddha was pointed out and he has since been desanctified.

== Your [[SCA]] [[Persona]] is a Buddhist ==
No, probably not. The [[SCA]] is about Western culture prior to the [[17th century]]. Western [[Europe]] had almost no contact with Buddhists during this time. See above.

A '''cultural movement''' is a specific change in society, or more properly, society's attitudes and interests in relation to items of culture, such as art, learning, science, music, etc.

It is more correct to describe the [[Renaissance]] as a '''cultural movement''' than a period of time. For example, [[19th century]] historians may make claims such as ''The Renaissance started in Italy in 1450 and progressed through Europe by 1485, finishing on the 22nd September 1601 at 4:30 in the afternoon, with a cup of tea and biscuits''. This is completely wrong.

It is more correct to say: The [[Renaissance]] describes a particular '''cultural movement''', which embodies changes to attitudes to [[art]], [[literature]], [[theology]], and to a lesser extent [[science]]. It occurred during the [[early modern]] time period, and affected different parts of [[Europe]] at different times. Some of the changes brought on by the [[Renaissance]] include increased interest in [[Humanism]], interest in [[ancient]] [[Greek]] learning, changes in attitudes to [[education]] (some few of which persisted until the early [[20th century]]), etc.

Although this is still a relatively simplistic view of the [[Renaissance]] (and doesn't address the issue of whether the [[Renaissance]] of the [[15th century]] and [[16th century]] really happened the way we think it did or not), it is more correct to identify the [[Renaissance]] as a cultural movement in this way rather than a time period.

Arguably, the [[Renaissance]] didn't affect [[Russia]] until much later (perhaps as late as 1917), and is yet to have any impact on [[China]], but that's another discussion completely.

If you need to describe the period from 1450 onwards (to about the mid [[18th century]]) with a degree of accuracy, use the expression "[[early modern]]" instead.
They spread throughout [[Europe]] after the revolt of Bar Kochba in AD99. The '''Jews''' also form a religious grouping following the '''Jewish''' religion. The intellectual focus of the '''Jewish''' religion is the [[synagogue]], although by and large '''Jews''' tend to treat attendance at a [[synagogue]] differently to the way that [[catholic]]s treat attendance at [[church]].

== Jewish History in the [[Middle Ages]] and [[Renaissance]] ==

(a very brief and mildly inaccurate outline).

=== Early [[Middle Ages]] ===

In eastern [[Europe]], the main Jewish force from the [[8th century]] onwards was the [http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khazars Khazars].

In western [[Europe]], the early [[medieval]] life of the Jews was established by [[Gregory the Great]] and later [[Louis the Pious]] who in turn rejected forced baptism, encouraged favours for the Jewish people, and placed the Jews under the protection of the King. The [[Catholic Church]] had prohibited [[usury]] amongst [[christian]]s, and so the Jews were handed a monopoly in the loaning of money. This made many Jews relatively wealthy.

Until about 1150 or so, the Jews were variously required to wear particular [[clothing]], constrained from wearing various clothes or types of cloth, banned from bearing arms, banned from participating as wars, classed as ''unfree'', etc. For the money sometimes it wasn't such a bad deal.

=== Later [[Middle Ages]] ===

Between the [[11th century]] and the [[13th century]] things took a drastic turn for the worse. The first great persecutions of the Jews took place during the [[crusade]]s, and greater restrictions were placed on apparel.

The Jews were expelled from [[England]] in 1209, [[France]] in 1306 and again in 1394, subject to the inquisition in [[Spain]] from 1391, expelled from [[Spain]] in 1492 and from [[Portugal]] in 1496. Modern historians rate the expulsion of the Jews from [[Spain]] as the single act that was most greatly to blame for the [[economic]] decline and later collapse of [[Spain]].

=== [[Renaissance]] and [[Reformation]] ===

Things got a lot better in the early [[Reformation]]. The humanist and [[Hebrew]] scholar [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johann_Reuchlin Johann Reuchlin] became the spokesman of the Jews, succesfully arguing with the Emperor Maximilian that the Jews should provide [[Hebrew]] chairs at every German [[university]] for which the Jews should furnish books.

[[Martin Luther]]'s defence of the Jews was published in 1523, but he turned against the Jews in 1542 after which things got bad for the Jews again especially in [[German]] [[Protestant]] areas.

== [[Language]] and [[Custom]]s ==

The primary [[language]] of the Jews is [[Hebrew]]. Variously throughout the [[Middle Ages]] however they were prohibited from reading, writing, and/or speaking [[Hebrew]], and so other languages came into existence. These were, chiefly:

* [[Yiddish]], an amalgm of [[Hebrew]], [[German]], [[Russian]] and some [[Polish]], most commonly spoken by [[Ashkenazi]] Jews in Eastern and Central [[Europe]]. It is normally written with the [[Hebrew]] alphabet, although the [[Latin]] alphabet can be used.
* [[Ladino]], essentially a [[Romance]] dialect, spoken by Jews in [[Spain]], [[Italy]], and later [[The Netherlands]].

== Your [[SCA]] [[Persona]] is a Jew ==

Firstly you need to do a fair amount of reading and [[research]] into the time period. The [[SCA]] covers from the early [[medieval]] period until the late [[Renaissance]] of [[1600]] and the life and times of the Jews changed remarkably during that time period.

* Pick a time period and place. The Jews were widespread throughout [[Europe]], with the main concentrations being in [[Spain]], [[Portugal]], [[Germany]], [[Italy]], and amongst the [http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khazars Khazars].
* Find a noted Jewish [[scholar]] and quote his works. Often. Consider all other scholars to be mere shadows of his great self. Remember, where two Jews are gathered together, there are at least 3 opinions.
* [[Research]] the [[clothing]] restrictions of the day and area your [[persona]] inhabits, and follow those closely. The [[4th Lateran Council]] might be a good place to start looking.
* Learn some common [[Yiddish]] expressions, notably those of exasperation and belittlement, and bewilder your friends with them.
* Don't talk about money. Except to complain about how little you have, how much this [[cloth]] is costing you, how your [[wife]] eats you out of house and home, and how you can't bear to sell it for the price you are offering but you're doing it for such a fine gentleman as a great favour.
* Common occupations: The vast majority of Jews were poor: labourers, farmers, scholars, etc. There were occasionally wealthy [[merchant]]s, [[doctor]]s, and especially [[bank]]ers amongst the Jews, however, and these are good target occupations for the Jewish [[SCA]] [[persona]]. The Jews tended not to be [[law]]yers, and were universally not of the [[noble]] or other arms-bearing classes, except amongst the [http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khazars Khazars] where even the [[King]] was Jewish.

It may come from a particular place (e.g. [[Ireland]] or [[Germany]]) and/or time (e.g. [[12th century]]), and you can create a story behind your persona. Then again, there's the other type of people who simply have an [[SCA name]], wear whatever clothes they like, have a device that doesn't match their persona, and cover a whole range of time periods, and that is perfectly fine and acceptable too.

The '''Middle Ages''' (adjective ''medieval'') was the ''middle'' period in a schematic division of [[European history]] into three 'ages': Classical civilization, the Middle Ages, and Modern Civilization. It is commonly considered as having lasted from the end of the Western [[Roman Empire]] ([[5th century]]) until the rise of national monarchies and the beginnings of demographic and economic renewal after the [[Black Death]], European overseas exploration and the cultural revival known as the [[Renaissance]] around the [[15th century]].

As the later Roman Empire changed its form and collapsed in the West, several [[Germanic]] and later [[Slavic]] peoples and the still-powerful regional noble families of the later Empire competed for power in different parts of Europe with one another and with the surviving eastern portion of the Roman Empire (commonly called the [[Byzantine Empire]] by modern Europeans).

The early part of the period is marked in western Europe by the greatly reduced power of centralised administration and the consequent alienation of government authority and responsibility for military organisation, taxation and law and order at successive levels to provincial and local lords supported directly from the proceeds of a portion of the territories over which they held military, political and judicial power. The later Middle Ages would see the regrowth of centralized power as countries came to be aware of their own national identities and strong rulers sought to expand the territory they organized under a central government. One well known version of this consolidation is known as the [[Albigensian Crusade]].

This hierarchy of reciprocal obligations, known as [[feudalism]] or the feudal system, binding each man to serve his superior in return for the latter's protection made for a confusion of territorial sovereignty (as allegiances were subject to change over time, and were sometimes mutally contradictory), but the resulting ability of local arrangements to function in the absence of a strong royal power provided some resiliency in a political order distinguished by its lack of uniformity.

The spread of [[Christian]]ity from the Mediterranean area and from [[Ireland]] and [[Scotland]] throughout Europe and the absence of any firm alternative ideological basis for power meant that ecclesiastics became deeply involved in government, and provided the basis for a first European "identity" in the form of a religion common to most of the continent from at least the [[9th century]] until the separation of the Catholic and Orthodox churches (1054).

An example of this identity at work is the period loosely identified as the [[Crusade]]s, during which [[Pope]]s, kings, and emperors tried to draw on Christian unity to wage war on [[Islam]], which was spreading along Europe's southern and eastern borders. Political unanimity in Europe was largely illusory, and the military support for most crusades was drawn from limited regions of Europe. Substantial areas of northern Europe also remained outside Christendom until the twelfth century or later.

'''[[Periodization]]'''

It is extremely difficult to decide when the Middle Ages ended, and in fact scholars assign different starting dates for the [[Renaissance]] in different parts of Europe. Most scholars who work in 15th century Italian history, for instance, consider themselves Renaissance or Early Modern historians, while anyone working on England in the early 15th century is considered a medievalist. Others choose specific events, such as the Turkish capture of [[Constantinople]] or the end of the Anglo-French [[Hundred Years' War]] (both [[1453]]), or the fall of Muslim [[Spain]] or [[Christopher Columbus]]'s voyage to [[the Americas|America]] (both [[1492]]), to mark the period's end.

Similar differences are now emerging in connection with the start of the period. Traditionally, the Middle Ages is said to begin when the West Roman Empire formally ceased to exist in 476 CE. However, that date is not important in itself, since the West Roman Empire had been very weak for some time, while Roman culture was to survive at least in Italy for yet a few decades or more. Today, some date the beginning of the Middle Ages to the division and Christanisation of the Roman Empire ([[4th century]]) while others see the period to the rise of Islam ([[7th century]]) as "late Classical".

The Middle Ages in the West are often subdivided into an early period (sometimes called the "[[Dark Ages]]", at least from the fifth to eighth centuries) of shifting polities, a relatively low level of economic activity and successful incursions by non-Christian peoples (Slavs, Arabs, Scandinavians, Magyars); a middle period (the High Middle Ages) of developed institutions of lordship and vassalage, castle-building and mounted warfare, and reviving urban and commercial life; and a later period of growing royal power, the rise of commercial interests and weakening customary ties of dependence, especially after the 14th-century plague.
In the last years of the Roman Empire Western Europe was a patchwork of belief systems, most notable among them the [[pagan]] cult of Wotan, the remnants of the Celtic druids and [[Christian]]ity. Having won the conversion of Emperor Constatine some years earlier [[Europe]]an [[Christian]]ity was centred in [[Rome]], and later gained a foothold in [[Ireland]]. Its spread was gradual and by the [[10th century]] [[Christian]]ity dominated [[Europe]].

The spread of [[Islam]] through the traditional [[Christian]] heartland of Egypt meant the the word ''Christendom'' soon became synonymous with [[Europe]], the temporary [[Muslim]] conquest of [[Iberia]] notwithstanding.

Sometime during its history, the [[SCA]] decided to ban all overt use of religion. This law was enacted because incidents showed some kind of ruling was required (see sidenote). While it does dispose of a very important part of medieval times, it also takes away many of the bad aspects. (e.g. it's not fun to be on the wrong side of a [[Crusade]]r, a [[Catholic]] in [[Reformation]] [[England]], etc).

In general, a guideline is to not inflict religion on anyone else while attending an [[SCA]] event, and everyone will get along fine. Many people adopt [[persona]]s that are deeply religious, because their medieval counterpart would have been deeply religious. The problem is only with inflicting your religious beliefs (even if they're only "pretend" ones) on other people who might find that offensive. (And some people might be offended if you pretend to hold religious beliefs or positions you don't actually hold; this is the actual problem with monk or nun personas, assuming that actual monks or nuns are not likely to join the SCA.) Feel free to carry or use a rosary or other [[religious]] artifact; just don't rub other people's faces in it, and ''don't force them (or appear to force them) to be a part of your religious observance.''

One of the most obvious repercussions of this ruling is the ban on certain potentially offensive symbols (e.g. the Swastika, Star of David, etc) in [[SCA]] [[device]]s.<br><br>
The last great '''pagan''' kingdom in Europe was that of [[Lithuania]], which began its rise under [[Gedmyn]] in 1316 or so. Tricky subject. There is no [[law]] in the [[SCA]] covering '''pagan''' [[persona]]e specifically, except the one tenet that obvious trappings of any kind of [[religion]] should not be used.
OK, I want a new major category for an idea I've been kicking around for a while. I want to do a series of pages, with the high points of the news of the day for a place and other things that someone living there would know. I dont so much want wars and battles, but when the new bridge got put up, who the King is sleeping with this week, who the top poets are and whether or not the harvest was good or bad. I've got some scrawled notes for 1589, and I'd like a set of pages I can do ... a "News from a Place and Time" section would be ideal. And could I please appeal for some way to easily put footnotes into Wiki ? I'm a footnote junkie, because that empowers readers to go do their own research.
[[User:Anton|Anton]]

:Thats an interesting idea. I'd say the best way to go about it would be to link to pages with names like <nowiki>[[News from 1066]]</nowiki> of <nowiki>[[News from 1066, England]]</nowiki> from the different [[period|centuries]]. If there were lots of these pages we'd have to start dividing the centuries into decades. Anyway, the best thing to do now would be to create a [[Cunnan:Period headline news|sample page of headlines]] so that we can all comment on it. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]
=== Working with Wikipedia and other online material ===

How do people see this site working with content on http://www.wikipedia.org (or other sites I suppose)? If wikipedia has good content on some topic of interest, do we just address the re-enactment aspect and use an external links section to point people to the wikipedia page? Problem there is that as people surf they end up leaving this site and there won't likely be links to bring them back. Alternatively, we could copy over content from wikipedia so that linked content would point to the Cunnan version, but the obvious problem here is redundant maintainence. Whatever the consensus, it seems the style guide could say a little more about this. [[User:JakeVortex|JakeVortex]] 10:34, 30 Oct 2003 (EST)

:When I've moved in info from the wikipedia I've tried to re-word it so that its a bit more SCA relevant. I'd say that the best way to work with wikipedia content is to move it into Cunnan and work from there, that way we can add whatever we feel is needed to the article without worrying about the goals of the wikipedia. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

On a related topic, would it be possible / desirable to make all external links open in a new window? [[User:Conrad_Leviston|Conrad]]

:It would be possible but it is not something I'd like to do. It would mean making some changes to the wiki software which would make it very hard to upgrade. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

The main problems I have with some of the stuff in Wikipedia is that it is either (a) wrong, being often based on cuts from, say, 1905 editions of encyclopediae, which are in turn based on research conducted in the 1800's, or (b) not applicable to SCA folks.

Now I don't have a problem with a lot of it. It's relevant and accurate and stuff, and we needn't reproduce it here. e.g. the various biographical articles which are quite detailed. Some of their other articles contain a number of innacuracies and/or prejudices, however. Also, an article on, say, the third crusade, for which wikipedia gives the dry facts, is really only useful here if you take the view of how you would handle your persona if he or she were living, say, in the levant in the time of that crusade.

For that reason I'll continue my current approach of linking to wikipedia articles where appropriate, copying and revising where necessary, and re-writing from scratch with links to the original where I feel it benefits Cunnan for me to do that.

=== Standard format for attribution ===
For those that haven't been following the conversation happening in another part of the wiki the topic of attribution for original text has come up. Since we have, at least, one person who insists upon having this style of attribution in the article (and not just the article history) I think there should be some discussion of a standard format.

I don't like the idea of this being used for articles that have been written ''for'' the wiki (since the original author will always be recorded by the software in this case and it is contrary to the wiki ideal) but I do think that it would good for this to be included in articles started using content previously published elsewhere (since the original author may not have been the person who added it to the wiki).

The format I propose is as follows:

----

==== Attribution ====
Much of this article is based on an original article by ''Person XYZ'', you can find a copy of the original article at ''some location (Possibly the article history?)''

----

What do people think of this format? When should/shouldn't attribution be included? - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

:Personally, I think that if somebody wants to have their own perspective with attribution on the wiki I would like to see it done the following way:

:The person would put either a stub or non-controversial entry for the topic in question (eg. the reformation started when Martin Luther accidentally nailed his laundry list to the church door). At the bottom would be a ''See also'' list including something like ''Anton's perspective of the Reformation''.

:Given his writing style and depth of knowledge and writing style I would go out of my way to look at what Anton has to say on a subject. Having extra pages along these lines would IMO add an extra dimension to the wiki, while still retaining its original flavour. Everybody still gets to have their input on the main article page, while individuals are able to put forward a consistant, well thought out point of view in a single article. Best of all no extra coding is required. [[User:Conrad Leviston|Conrad Leviston]]

:It might be a good idea for everyone to log out and then in again to help clear up any user preference issues - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]
::I just noticed that some of the skins don't seem to be working (Cologne Blue is almost useless), I'll try to fix this quickly. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]
:::Skins are fixed again. The database is now read/write so people can begin editing again. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

For people who asked me if the article count was accurate: It wasn't but it is now. We have 1033 articles (a bit of a difference!). - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

=== Categories ===
The current stable version of the Mediawiki software, which Cunnan is running, doesn't include the experimental Category feature. This means that there are some articles that contain <nowiki>[[Category:whatever]]</nowiki> which no longer do anything special. I've deleted the Category: articles but pages linking to them will still need to be cleaned. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

=== Enhanced special pages links ===
It is now possible to link to specific cases of the special pages. Eg <nowiki>[[Special:Whatlinkshere/Heraldry]]</nowiki> will create [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Heraldry]], a list of all pages that link to the Heraldry article. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] ([[Special:Contributions/Tobin|See my contributions]], another example of the enhanced special page links ;-)

=== RFEs ===

Two enhancements I'd like to see:

* A piece of javascript to place the cursor into the search box on entering the main frame. It would be a few liners in the main template. I'll see if I can dig out the code and paste it here.
* A search for links type page where I can find what links to a certain article without creating the article. e.g. I've written a bunch of pages with links to, say, lollard, lollardry, lollardy, lollards, etc, and I want to find them all in turn if I have to but fix the links so I only create one "lollard" page.

'''Politics''' within the [[Middle Ages]] and the [[Renaissance]] is a very complex subject. Very much like politics is today. Too complex to fit on this page.

Some of the things that need covering in a discussion of [[medieval]] through to [[early modern]] politics include: Roman conquests, neo-Roman (eg: romano-british) activity, Viking activity, the Church, Aryanism and Catholicism, Charlemagne, the Pope, the Empire, the Church again, the Gothic, Vandal, Magyar, Hunnish, Khazar, Mongol and Gothic (again) invasions and settlements, the Eastern Orthodox church, the schisms, the other schisms, early nationalism (which bears no resemblence to post-18th C nationalism), the Danelaw, the Roman law and interpretations of Roman law, secular and temporal law, the Empire again, Papal authority and excommunication, Crusades and Jihad, the Latin states, the schism again, the city state, Catholicism and the Moslem view of the Frankish world, the Catholic view of the Moslem world, anti-papal reformations, the nationalist churches, the city states again, the reformation and protestantism, Niccolo Macciavelli, Castiglione, Mary I and Elizabeth I, the foundation of the papal and catholic plots against Elizabeth, 1588 and the armada, and at about that point we run out of time.

Oh, and in no particular order.

== Politics in the SCA ==
'''Politics''' in the [[SCA]] usually revolves around the [[officer]]s and [[peer]]s of the SCA, not to mention the [[Crown]]. Fortunately, in the case of the latter, we have a system that is very similar to the system in place in the early [[Middle Ages]] in that the strongest person with the largest (in our case blunt) [[sword]] is the winner.

An important concept in medieval romance, where you are in love with someone unreachable, where to actually sleep with them would invite disaster, so instead you pine after them, serve them loyally, write poems and songs in their honour etc. This tradition became so popular that it became a status symbol for a noble to have his wife admired by a [[troubadour]].

In his book ''De Arte Honesti Amandi'' [[Andreas Capellanus]] sets forth the rules of courtly love. It is not entirely certain wether he is serious or simply making fun of literary custom. His rules include such things as ''Marriage is no excuse for not loving'' and ''Once love has become public, it rarely lasts''.

Examples of the medieval romantic disasters from doing something with someone you shouldn't include [[Lancelot and Guinevere]] in the story of [[King Arthur]], [[Abelard]] and Heloise, [[Henry VIII]] and a number of young ladies, and his daughter [[Elizabeth I]] and a number of young men.

Remember, friends don't let friends sleep with [[Tudor]]s.
