Arbeau says variously that the pavane was usually danced before a basse dance, and that after the pavane one customarily dances the galliard. It is a slow dance suitable for processions, and Arbeau states that it was used when a noble lady "is taken to Holy Church to be married, or when they lead a procession of the chaplains, masters and brethren of some noble confraternity."

The pavane is danced by a lord and lady holding hands. And is considered particularly suitable for genteel ladies as it is "charming and dignified", that is slow, a necessity for modesty and elegance when one is wearing a large dress. High nobles ladies may dance a pavane with a long train which may be held up by servants, especially as a procession. It is also suitable for lord scholars and clerics to dance in their long gowns, and young cavaliers may dance wearing their cloak and sword.

The pavane is played to announce the beginning of a grand ball, played until the "dancers have circled the hall 2 or 3 times, unless they prefer to dance it by advancing and retreating ." Pavanes also announce the entrance of gods/godesses or kings/emperors in a masquerade.

The movements of a basic pavane are two singles followed by a double forward starting with the left foot (i. e. left single, right single, left double). This is followed by two singles and a double, starting with the right foot, and as an alternative to doing these latter two singles and double forward one may do them backward so that throughout the dance one advances and then retreats.

If you wish to make a circuit of the room, and become trapped in a narrow space, a conversion is a more elegant solution than forcing a lady to walk backwards.

Arbeau transcribes the music and words to the pavane to which the SCA commonly dances the known world pavane, and states that it "contains two advancing and two retreating movements" (per verse/32 bars ie SLf SRf DLf, SRb SLb DRb, SLf SRf DLf, SRb SLb DRb), "which may be repeated as many times as the musicians or dancers please". This is much simpler than the way the pavane is normally danced in the SCA, indeed Arbeau remarks on how solem and slow the dance is, and boring for a young lady and man to dance together.

Arbeau mentions the tambour (drum) and flute as a pair of general-purpose instruments that can be played by a lone musician for dancing, but then says that many kinds of instruments may be used for the pavane (e. g. violin, other flutes, spinets), or they may be sung, however a tambour is recommended as it helps the dancers greatly.

A more complex pavane from Arbeau.
The pavane steps are rearranged in a variety of gestures, similar to the dance known as the canary.
The double is broken up into two sets of embellishments.

*pied droit approch&eacute; resulting in pied en l'air gauche - (continue the step with) step right ending with a low kick left
The fleurets of the central passage are replaced by other gestures while advancing or retreating in later repetitions of the pavane
*Fleuret - 2 small kicks and a large kick
<I>Passe meze</I> in French: A pavane played more quickly with a lighter beat, assuming the moderate tempo of a basse dance. It was done with variations in the steps of the double, and these variations could begin in the second of the two singles.
Usage
If the sagas, written in Old Norse are any indication, then the title (or occupational byname) comes after your first name. Then comes a descriptive byname, a locative, and finally a patronymic (or, more rarely, matronymic). So while in English his name is <b>King</b> Harald Fine-hair, in Old Norse he is Haraldr <b>konungr</b> inn hárfagri. Similarly, the 13th century <b>King</b> Haakon Haakonarson is Hákon <b>konungr</b> Hákonarson in Old Norse. It also seems to be generally written in lower-case, too.

Silk is the finely woven thread of the 'silk worm' - a caterpillar (Bombyx mori is the most common species, but there are others) that produces silk while building its cocoon in preparation for pupation.

Silk clothing was worn during the medieval period but not next to the skin as it would be soiled too readily. Instead it was worn over woolen clothing.

The thread is taken from the cocoon before the moth fully passes through the chrysalis phase. This process kills the moth, so obviously not every chrysalis is taken.

The colour of the silk depends on what the caterpillars were fed. They require green leaves, and are generally fed on mulberry leaves which give a very pale blonde or white, depending on species. If the diet is supplemented with rose petals, the thread can come out with a pink tinge.

High-quality silk is reeled rather than spun; the individual fibers are lifted out of a hot water bath to form threads. Generally only the waste silk from broken cocoons is spun.

The city of Canterbury is located in south-east England in the county of Kent. It has been a place of prominence in the Anglican church for centuries, being the seat of the Archbishop of Canterbury, head of the Church of England.

The murder of Thomas Becket there led to Canterbury becoming a popular pilgrimage destination, as immortalised in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales.

House Lightning Mist is an SCA household based in the Northern Region of the Kingdom of Ansteorra, with Septs in the Kingdoms of Gleann Abhann and Caid.

Formed at the Ansteorran Fall Crown in A.S. XXXII by Ld. Donecan MacDubhgal of Loch Alsh and Captain Talon DeWiley. While nursing the last known bottle of Gnome's Milk and a fifth of Southern Comfort, they reminisced about times spent in the lost Shire of Morrows Keep and the comraderie and fun had during those days of yore. Deciding to rekindle those feelings, rather than lament them, Donecan and Talon decided to form a household. And thus did House Lightning Mist begin.

Within a year or so Lightning Mist grew to 20+ members, with Lascivia Greymouse joining Donecan and Talon as Triumvirs or co-leaders of the House. Then Talon was lost in a battle between two dragons in A.S. XXXIV. His brother, Scar DeWiley, then took up Talon's office in the Triumvirate.

House membership gradually increased to around 35 members and initiates by the beginning of A.S. XLII, with about 25 being regularly active in the SCA. The House has two small Septs, one in Gleann Abhann and one in Caid.

The Kingdom of Lochac comprises all SCA groups in Australia and New Zealand.

When the SCA groups in a region fulfill certain criteria (as specified by Corpora), they can become a kingdom, provided sufficient members wish to do so. This occurred in Australia in July 2002. The New Zealand groups joined the new kingdom at the Lochac May Crown, 2003.

The Australian groups were previously the Principality of Lochac, part of the Kingdom of the West. The New Zealand groups were formerly part of the Kingdom of Caid.

The name Lochac comes from the writings of Marco Polo, where he catalogs the lands to the south. Lochac is described as a land south of Java with a sovereign king. Late sixteenth century maps can be found with Luchac, Beach and Maletur forming part of a large mainland area in the position of Western Australia.

Heraldry
The device of the Kingdom of Lochac is: Quarterly azure and argent, on a cross gules a crown between four mullets of six points, in canton a laurel wreath argent.

Rice is a grain eaten widely in Asia, particularly southeast Asia.

It is prepared by hulling the dried rice grains to produce brown rice. Further hulling will remove the germ and bran of the rice grain producing white rice. Either variety can be cooked by steaming or boiling. Brown rice or white rice may be ground to make rice flour.

Rice was probably brought to Europe first in the Muslim areas of the Iberian Penninsula during the 10th century. It had become more widespread by the 15th century and can be found in a number of period recipes.

Conrad Leviston: Updated Tir Mara's name

A Crown Principality has no formal existence according to the SCA governing documents (Corpora). It is referenced in the Society Seneschals Handbook:

<hr><i>
4. Use "Crown Principality" status to recognize regional development. Where an area is obviously suitable for eventual Principality status, a Kingdom can reward and encourage the trend by declaring the area to be a Crown Principality. A Crown Principality is exactly and only a region with a fancy name and a line in the Coronation ceremony&mdash;the King and Queen also become Prince and Princess of the psuedo-Principality when they assume the thrones. It has no laws but the Kingdom laws. Its officers are regional deputies to the Kingdom officers. However, the name lends it extra emotional reality. The Kingdom can allow it have a champion and to develop some usages of its own, and these steps will smooth the eventual transition.

5. All the procedures for creating a Crown Principality are under Kingdom control, as long as the Kingdom doesn't attempt to hand over functions reserved to the royalty or officers of SCA Principalities. (That is, the ceremonial representatives for the Crown with a Crown Principality may NOT warrant subordinate officers, proclaim banishments, or bestow armigerous awards without specific Crown approval for individual recipients.)

6. Please be cautious with the idea, and do some enthusiastic straw polling before advising your royalty to establish a Crown Principality&mdash;imaginary though it is, a Crown Principality develops enough personality that it would be very painful for an area if the Kingdom later decided to take the status away.</i>
:from the SCA, Inc. Society Seneschal's Handbook
<hr>

Thus, it is essentially a semi-formal declaration of intent to work toward Principality status by a collection of branches that wish to form a principality, but which do not meet one or more of the requirements. Since it is not a group designation recognized by the SCA, it has no laws, and no formal officers or ceremonial head.

As an administrative unit, it may be compared to a region such as those found in the East Kingdom.

However, Kingdom Law and Custom may depute certain powers of the Crown to sub-groups. Thus law and custom may dictate that a Crown Principality have a ceremonial head, such as that of the former Crown Principality of Insulae Draconis, whose heads were styled as Viceroy and Vicereine. Likewise, law and custom may allow those heads to grant non-armigerous awards.

The following groups are or have been Crown Principalities (in no order):
*Nordmark
*Principality of Oertha
*Tir Righ
*Lochac
*Aethelmearc
*Summits

Conrad Leviston: /* Baronies, Cantons and Shires */

The following is a list of SCA groups within the Kingdom of Lochac.

You can obtain an up-to-date list here:

http://www.sca.org.au/lochac/groups/groups.php

This list is taken from a database maintained by the Kingdom Seneschal and also contains up to date lists of group contacts. Furthermore, the database contains a mapping from Australian groups to Postcodes so that you can enter your postcode or suburb name into the web form and it will tell you what group you belong to.

Some interesting fluff about groups in the Kingdom of Lochac:

* All groups have a set of postcodes assigned, except groups in New Zealand and colleges. The registrar's database uses the same mapping so that your membership card will have the correct group on it based on your postcode.
* New Zealand groups are assigned by telephone area code.
* Colleges are assigned by personal choice -- if you say on your membership form that you're in a college then that's what the registrar will put on your membership card and that's what the Kingdom Seneschal will assign your membership to.
* If you belong to a college then you also count towards the membership of the group in which you live (not the group where the college is based), so that if you live in Arrowsreach but are a member of St Monica's then your membership will count towards Arrowsreach and not Krae Glas.

Membership assignment to groups is important -- to count as an official group, a shire, canton, or college must have 5 members and a barony must have 25. Note that as of October 2004 all members, including family and associate members, count towards group numbers.

Krae Glas is an SCA group in the Kingdom of Lochac and encompases the College of St Monica. It is located in the south-eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Australia . The current seneschal is Lord Yves de Lyle.

Krae Glas was founded as a canton of the Barony of Stormhold in A.S. XXIX by former members of St Monica's. The name is Breton for "Blue Strand", a reference to the Mornington Peninsula which is within the group.

Krae Glas became a Shire on January 25th A.S. XXXVIII, and in A.S. XLIV it was announced that the group would advance to barony status. They invested their first Baron and Baroness on the 27th of August A.S. XLV.

Heraldry
The device is or, on a bend azure three laurel wreaths palewise or, which is based on the infamous Scrope heraldry, Azure a bend or. As there is no charge other than the laurel wreaths on the device, a dolphin hauriant azure was used as an unofficial badge, although it conflicted with the dauphin of France. There is currently a proposition of submitting "a dolphin hauriant azure, with a bend or" as the populace badge.

The Krae Glas Herald has the title "Sens de Fin" herald, which roughly translates as "Sense of Purpose Herald."
