The Rowany Festival (sometimes called just "Festival") is Australia's largest SCA event. Currently, it is held at the Crossroads medieval village. Anything that people do in the SCA (well, most things) will be on display in some form or other at Rowany Festival.

Festival happens every Easter long weekend - don't miss it for the world.

For more info, check out the website - http://www.sca.org.au/rowany/festival/

Religious observance
If religious reasons are inclined to slow down your attendance at an event over Easter, don't forget that a group of Christians generally get together in a discreet place to hold a scheduled Easter Sunday mass. And if Pesach falls at the same time of year, I'm sure there will be people cooking in accordance with customs - it's actually easier to avoid leavening agents in period cooking.

(Just so people are aware -- very occasionally, when Pesach does fall during Easter, a seder is held at the festival site. Contact Del if you want to be included in this).

: Del's Pie Shop sells pies of various sorts -- the chicken and mushroom pies and the pyes of pares are kosher for passover. The others are not.
Camping at Rowany Festival
Hrmm... so you're coming along and don't know what to take? Perhaps you need a camping list?

The history of Rowany Festival
Rowany Festival officially came into being in 1983 (A.S. XVII), when it ran for four days, and cost $40 AUD. The 2004 Rowany Festival ran for six days, and cost a little more.

Rowany Festival has had three different locations - Fairholme Park in Wilton,
Tara Girl Guide camp in Silverdale, and most recently, the Crossroads site near Yass.

Pavilions are a form of tent used in the SCA. They sometimes have at least one open side which is used as a verandah during the day, and closed up during the night (or when it rains). Some people put a lot of effort into their pavilions. There are larger pavilions which are owned by baronies and so forth (as well as by people who think that bigger is better).

Pavilion is also commonly used in the SCA as a term to distinguish a period style tent from a mundane tent, such as the ubiquitous dome tent or nylon A frame. Re-enactors use the term period tent or a term used to define the tent style geteld, Viking, etc.

At re-enactment events those with tents not appropriate for the time frame for the event are required to set them up out of sight from the event. It is unheard of for a re-enactment group of any standing, to not possess enough period tents to house a signicant proportion of their membership.

Making a Tent
Interestingly, making a period style tent is about as expensive as buying a decent modern tent that is much smaller, and oft-times less practical. Gwynfor Lwyd's 5.5m x 3m Saxon geteld(designed and constructed by House Woodrose) is about $500 of materials and took 28 hours from go to woah, so the only additional cost is time (and how you cost your time is your business!).
The Shire of Arrowsreach is the SCA group in the North eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Of course anyone can join any group or subgroup, so not everyone lives in this area, nor does everyone who lives in this area belong to this group, but it will mean events are close to home for people who live in this area.

Bethan: /* Other Fencing Awards */

In many SCA kingdoms, fencers may be admitted into the Order of the White Scarf, if in the eyes of the Crown acting on the recommendation of the other members of the order, they have achieved a high level of expertise and behaviour in fencing. They are given a white scarf to wear to signify their rank.

White Scarves sometimes take new fighters under their wing. While names for these fighters vary they are most commonly referred to as Cadets and perform much the same function for their White Scarf as a Squire does to a Knight. Cadets commonly wear a red or blue scarf, depending on which Kingdom they are in, as a symbol of their position.

This is not a peerage order but all the kingdoms in the Known World that have signed the White Scarf Treaty acknowledge the rank of order members from outside their realm. Members are normally given a Grant of Arms on entering the order. The title commonly used is Don or Donna/Dona, but this may also used by any armiger as an alternative to Lord or Lady. In White Scarf Kingdoms and especially in the fencing communities of White Scarf Kingdoms, the title is usually used only for White Scarves.

White Scarf Treaty
The White Scarf Treaty is a unique document in the SCA, and the order of the White Scarf is likewise a unique entity. The treaty was originally signed in 1987 between the Outlands and Ansteorra. The text of that document is here: http://www.avigne.org/sca/ws/treaty.shtml

At it's most legalistic, the Treaty allows names and heraldry that might otherwise conflict to be registered. (Further elaboration or comment from the SCA College of Heralds would be welcome here.) The central feature of the treaty, however, is the clause which establishes equivalence between the orders across kingdom lines. The treaty is sometimes even called a treaty of equivalence.

What this means is that, unique among SCA awards, the White Scarf is recognized in multiple kingdoms without being recognized SCA wide by the Corporate documents (as are Awards, Grants and Patents of Arms, and Peerages both bestowed and royal.) Thus a member of the White Scarf of Ansteorra who moves to the Outlands is treated as a member of the order in the Outlands, and vice-versa. The same holds true of all White Scarf kingdoms.

Some of the information off this link is outdated: http://www.realtime.net/~otto/handbook/wstreaty.html

The White Scarf Kingdoms are, in order:
#Ansteorra
#Outlands
#Trimaris
#Atenveldt
#An Tir
#Atlantia
#Caid
#AEthelmearc
#Artemisia
#Lochac
#Northshield

Other Fencing Awards
Not all Kingdoms have signed the White Scarf Treaty. Most of these Kingdoms do have awards for fencing, however they are independant orders just as any other Kingdom award.

*The Order of the Golden Rapier (OGR) in the East Kingdom
*The Bronze Ring in the Middle Kingdom
*The Dragons Steel in Drachenwald
*The Royal Company of Courtiers in the West Kingdom
