Finally, the Laurel Sovereign of Arms may choose to name heralds who have provided long and dedicated service to the College of Arms "Herald Extraordinary."

Historically, heraldic titles could come from place names (Richmond Herald), surnames (Chandos Herald), charges (Rouge Dragon Pursuivant), and order names (Garter King of Arms). (These heraldic titles are all English.) Heraldic titles in the SCA are frequently taken from the name of a charge on a group's arms (e.g., Triskele Herald of [[Trimaris]]), from documented or conjectural heraldic charges, sometimes from the name of an order (e.g., Pelican Sovereign of Arms), occasionally from place names (Midlands Herald of the [[Middle]]), and hypothetically from surnames.

Historically, English heralds could use their heraldic titles as surnames; for example, in a 1541 lay subsidy of London, two heralds are listed as "Master Richemond Harrord" and "Mr York Harrord"; in ''The True Use of Armorie'' (1592), the narrator refers to "a Herauld ... surnamed Faulcon" (perhaps corresponding to Falcon King of Arms). Anthony Wagner asserts this right for members of the English [College of Arms] in the 20th century; many SCA heralds with titles will frequently sign heraldic correspondence with their title (e.g. "Margaret Pelican"), or refer to colleagues this way.

=== Who is a Herald? ===

In the SCA, ''anyone'' can practice [[heraldry]] as an activity. Generally, you do not need a special office or [[title]] to help others choose names and research [[device]]s, herald a [[tournament]], or make announcements at an [[event]]. The only activities limited to persons of a particular rank involve actually accepting and processing submission forms. This is because this duty involves working with money. Who may do this varies from [[Kingdom]] to Kingdom. Officially licensed Kingdom heralds are said to have a [[warrant]].

Also, [[royalty]], [[nobility]], [[household]]s, or any individual may retain someone as their personal herald for [[court]], as a messenger, and other heraldic duties. Who this person is and what their duties are is strictly the prerogative of the "employer."

Heralds can frequently be identified because they wear tabards: garments which depict the arms of the person who employs them on the front, back, and sleeves. Only heralds should wear tabards; however, it is authentic for others to wear heraldic surcoats or gowns, depending on the time period and culture they seek to recreate. Tabards with baronial or kingdom arms may be part of the group's regalia; heralds who do not hold a specific office sometimes wear medallions, favors, or tabards with the SCA College of Arms logo shown above.

The word '''University''' is derived from the [[Latin]] word for "[[guild]]". The church established schools with the purpose of educating people in a particular profession (a non-trade profession), and then universities arose purely for "higher education". In the [[Middle Ages]], it was mostly [[church]]es or courts who had the better [[book]] collections of the times, so therefore those involved with these institutions (who were mostly those with lots of [[money]], or those who could obtain patronage from the same) therefore had access to higher education.

== Universities in [[Europe]] ==

The first university, [[Al-Azhar]], was founded in Cairo, [[Egypt]] in 970AD.

The first university founded in [[Europe]] was the one in [[Bologna]], in 1088AD, which was followed up with more being founded predominently in [[Italy]], [[France]], [[England]] and [[Spain]] (during the [[1100]]s) and later in [[Germany]] and [[Austria]] ([[1300]]s). They had various faculties, as they do today. Note that the age of a university does not necessarily reflect on its status.

The premiere theology university of medieval Europe was the [[University of Paris]] at [[Notre Dame]], but [[Bologna]] was the place to go for [[Law]], and Palermo for [[Medicine]]. In [[England]], [[Oxford]] and [[Cambridge]] weren't bad. Most medieval universities, and students at them, were supported by the [[Catholic Church]], or by bequests from the rich and the pious. University students had a fair amount of control over the faculty and started to organise themselves as [[nation]]s (people of like cultural origin or [[language]]). Brawls between local townspeople and students were not unknown. A successful university career was often a stepping-stone to important positions at [[Court]] or in the [[Church]].

== Universities in the SCA ==

[[SCA]] groups may be based at modern universities and are referred to as a [[college]]. These are often a popular recruitment base for the [[Shire]] or [[Barony]] in which the College lies. In the [[East Kingdom]], these groups are often referred to as [[Borough|Boroughs]].

In [[New Zealand]] the use of the word '''University''' is reserved for actual government acredited institutions approved to use that name, and therefore the [[Kingdom of Lochac]] does not use the word "University" to describe any of its internal institutions.

The word "university" can also be used in the [[SCA]] to refer to an institution offering semi-structured courses of learning about medieval facts or crafts. The kingdom of [[An Tir]] has the kingdom-wide [[University of Ithra]]; the [[East Kingdom|East]] runs Universities as focused [[event|events]] which specifically emphasize scholarly learning. [[Æthelmearc]] offers classes in the martial and gentle arts at twice-yearly [http://www.aecademy.org Æcademies]. The [http://university.atlantia.sca.org/ University] of [[Atlantia]] offers degrees to those who meet its qualification for teaching and attending classes at its sessions, which are held two or three times per year.
