The '''Principality of Insulae Draconis''' encompasses the [[SCA]] [[group]]s of the [[United Kingdom]], [[Ireland]] and [[Iceland]]. Insulae Draconis is part of the [[Kingdom of Drachenwald]].

== History ==

After many long years of attempting to unite themselves under a single name and [[banner]], these 11 [[groups]] were granted the right to form a [[Crown Principality]] in June [[2003]].

In November 2003 [[Sir]] Michael de Brad travelled from the noble [[Shire of Harpelestane]] and became the first [[Viceroy]] with [[Duchessa]] Alessandra Melusine Mantegna as his [[Vicereine]].

As of [[2008]] ([[A.S. XLIII]]), the Crown Principality began the process of becoming a [[Principality]]. At Battle of Brothers in the [[Shire of Flintheath]], on July 18th [[2009]] ([[A.S. XLIV]]), it was announced that the [[Board of Directors]] had approved Insulae Draconis's submission to become a full principality. The last viceregal [[tourney]] was held at [[Ffair Rhaglan]], in August, with the first [[coronet]] tourney being held in February [[2010]] (A.S. XLIV).

In February 2010 Sir William MacBrennan travelled from the noble [[Shire of Harpelestane]] and became the first [[Prince]] accompanied by his lady Mistress Æringunnr Yrsudóttir.

In 2016, ID incorporated as an [[affiliate organization]] called SCA UK, which administers membership for all of the principality save the [[Shire of Klakavirki]], which is instead associated with [[SKA (Nordmark)]] for mundane legal reasons, while remaining within the principality for all SCA internal matters.

They are given a white scarf to wear on the left arm or shoulder to signify their [[rank]], and if they do not already possess one a [[Grant of Arms]].

All the kingdoms in the [[Known World]] that have signed the '''White Scarf Treaty''' acknowledge the equivalency of [[order]] members from outside their [[realm]]. Sir Forgal Kersetter is one of the most widely known Peers in the SCA. He is the founding member of the Moose Lodge that has produced 36 Peers. An interesting part of Sir Forgal’s history is that he has never been King of any kingdom due to having never fought in any crown list. He has won tourneys, but his career in the United States Military has kept him from taking the crown. Most of his career has been in the service of the King and Queen of Atlantia. He has retired to the Kingdom of Trimaris where his service to the King and Queen of Trimaris http://cunnan.sca.org.au/wiki/Trimaris is without question.

Sir Forgal has increased the number of individuals playing in the SCA by inviting many military personnel to join the game. This increased influx of new members that move all over the world have significantly increased the world wide population. Sir Forgal was instrumental in increasing the over all skill of heavy weapons fighters by using military style hand to hand combat techniques. Sir Forgal has revolutionized the way in which battles are conducted at Pennsic and therefore the rest of the world. He has been the Atlantian Warlord five times at Pennsic and freely shared his military understanding as applied to SCA style fighting; which in turn has increased the skill of Warlords in every conflict since the 1980s.

Sir Forgal Kerstetter was knighted on April 4th, AS 21 (mundanely 1987.) At the Pennsic War of that year he took his first of many squires and founded the Moose Lodge. As his squires themselves became knighted, they decided to remain with Forgal to unite their households in an extended family. The Moose Lodge came to mean more than a household, but a collection of households united in a common vision and purpose.

Sir Forgal's was born April, 2nd 1953 he is the eldest of four brothers. He joined the United States Army and earned the rank of Command Sergeant Major. He has served all over the world from NATO in Europe to the SAS in Australia. He is currently retired.

A '''Quintuple Peer''' is a person who has been raised to all four of the [[peer|Bestowed Peerages]] (as of June 2024) and the [[Royal Peer|Royal Peerage]]. Fairly soon after the adoption of the new proposed peerage in ranged martial activity, it will probably mean somone who is a member of all five of the Bestowed Peerages. This becomes more difficult as the number of peerages increases.

At the time of writing (July 2024) a Quintuple Peer meant someone who had been elevated to the four bestowed Peerages, and was also a Royal Peer. After many long years of attempting to unite themselves under a single name and [[banner]], these 11 [[groups]] were granted the right to form a [[Crown Principality]] in June [[2003]].

In November 2003 [[Sir]] Michael de Brad travelled from the noble [[Shire of Harpelestane]] and became the first [[Viceroy]] with [[Duchessa]] Alessandra Melusine Mantegna as his [[Vicereine]].

As of [[2008]] ([[A.S. XLIII]]), the Crown Principality began the process of becoming a [[Principality]]. At Battle of Brothers in the [[Shire of Flintheath]], on July 18th [[2009]] ([[A.S. XLIV]]), it was announced that the [[Board of Directors]] had approved Insulae Draconis's submission to become a full principality. The last viceregal [[tourney]] was held at [[Ffair Rhaglan]], in August, with the first [[coronet]] tourney being held in February [[2010]] (A.S. XLIV).

In February 2010 Sir William MacBrennan travelled from the noble [[Shire of Harpelestane]] and became the first [[Prince]] accompanied by his lady Mistress Æringunnr Yrsudóttir.

In 2016, ID incorporated as an [[affiliate organization]] called SCA UK, which administers membership for all of the principality save the [[Shire of Klakavirki]], which is instead associated with [[SKA (Nordmark)]] for mundane legal reasons, while remaining within the principality for all SCA internal matters.

It is, obviously, a playful reference to the Western and

Sometimes the inhabitants are referred to as "the people of the Word" and "the people of the Book," a humourous reference to various [[religion]]'s own self-reference. In the SCA it indicates that Kingdoms that spread out from the West tended to receive their [[culture]] via [[oral tradition]] whereas those who spread out from the East, were usually working from published documents provided by the SCA which often did not describe the reality of the SCA particularly well.

The "book" in question was probably the first edition of the [[Known World Handboke]] or possibly a forerunner of it entitled the [[Handbook of the Current Middle Ages]], and the terms "People of the Word" and "People of the Book" were coined by [[Mistress]] [[Hilary of Serendip]]. (Probably.)

They are established by the Kingdom and while they are recognized in other places, they carry an extra cachet in their own home area. Kingdom awards may carry an

'''Households''' are groups within the [[SCA]], usually based around an interest in certain areas of SCA endeavour, or friendship groups (or both!). Sometimes a [[peer]] will form a household that includes his/her [[apprentice]]s/[[protege]]s/[[squire]]s. Unlike other [[groups]], such as a [[barony]], Households aren't based on geography (although members of a household may be from a particular geographical area), they are not official [[groups]] of the [[Society]], and any "[[membership|membership requirements]]" of a household are at the discretion of the household. Being "unofficial", a household cannot hold official meetings or [[events]], but they are more than welcome to run events ''on behalf'' of the official group. They may include or exclude anybody they like, whereas an official group cannot do this.

They can be a great support network, and often the activities of the household will extend beyond SCA. Another way to look at it is that a household is your "family" and the group the [[village]]/[[hamlet]] that you live in.

You do not have to be a part of any household, and just because someone is a part of a particular household does not mean that you can't hang out with them. You can even start your own household if you want to!

A '''peer''' in the [[SCA]] is a person who has received a [[Patent of Arms]] (with a few possible exceptions for ''some'' [[Royal Peer]]s.) They are not necessarily enrolled in an [[order]] of peerage, but enrollment is usually the norm.

For many years, there were three polling peerage orders (the '''Great Orders of Peerage'''): [[Order of the Laurel]], [[Order of Chivalry]], [[Order of the Pelican]] - aka [[Laurel]]s, [[Knight]]s/[[Master of arms | Masters of Arms]], and [[Pelican]]s. The fourth order, the [[Order of Defense]], was added in [[2015]]. These four are sometimes referred to as '''Bestowed Peerages.'''

In some kingdoms, the [[Order of the Rose]] is a polling order, but is not generally considered one of the Great Orders.

A ''[[triple peer]]'' is a person who holds membership in the three of these order. For many years, that meant membership in all the extant orders - [[Order of the Laurel]], [[Order of Chivalry]], and [[Order of the Pelican]] A double peer, obviously enough, is one who holds membership in two of the orders. With the addition of the Order of Defense, there are now ''[[quadruple peer]]s''. Typically Royal Peerages (see below) are not counted in this particular tally.

Royal Peers receive a [[Patent of Arms]] in return for time spent on the throne. [[Royal Peers]] appear above other peers in the [[Order of Precedence]].

In some Kingdoms, such as the [[Middle]] and [[Ansteorra]], Patents of Arms do not automatically accompany the Royal Peerages. What effect this has is uncertain, since it does not actually affect the [[Order of Precedence]]. Some Kingdoms do not give out any Royal Patents, some do on a case-by-case basis.

All Peers are expected to be the role models in the [[SCA]], upholding the values of [[chivalry]] and committing themselves to service to the realm.

In the [[SCA]] a '''kingdom level award''' is an award which is given by the [[King]] and/or [[Queen]] of a [[Kingdom]].

They are established by the Kingdom and while they are recognized in other places, they carry an extra cachet in their own home area. Kingdom awards may carry an
[[Award of Arms]] or a [[Grant of Arms]], making them [[armigerous]]. Only the [[peerage]]s may carry a [[Patent of Arms]], and although they are awarded by the Kingdoms they are recognized Society-wide - they are [[Society Level Award]]s.

One Kingdom Level Award, the [[White Scarf]], is recognized in multiple Kingdoms by [[treaty]]. It is not recognized by all Kingdoms, but is the only non-Peerage award recognized in multiple Kingdoms.

Each individual Kingdom establishes their own awards, distinct from those of any other [[group]]. In general, all follow the [[tradition]]al SCA model of having three award tracks: [[martial]], [[service]] and [[Arts and Sciences]]. But each also has special purpose awards for specific activities or qualities.

Reportedly, in the early 1970s it was called the [[Protectorate of Thairsis]], but there are no written records of that. In like manner, the [[Shire of Vielburgen]] was reportedly the first formal SCA [[branch]] on this side of the Great Ocean, but there are no formal records of that either.

Society level award

In the [[SCA]] a '''society level award''' is an award which is recognised throughout the [[known world]]. The three armigerous awards are all society level. These are the [[Award of Arms]] (AoA), [[Grant of Arms]] (GoA) and the [[Patent of Arms]] ([[Peerage]]).

The Patent of Arms is awarded with induction into one of:
*the [[Order of Chivalry]]
*the [[Order of the Laurel]]
*the [[Order of the Pelican]]
*the [[Order of Defense]]

In most [[Kingdom]]s, but not all, [[Royal Peer]]s also receive Patents.

The term "Society Level Award" is a bit awkward, since it is inaccurate in two ways.
#They are, despite their names, technically [[Order]]s, since one can only receive them once, as opposed to [[award]]s which can be received multiple times. In fact, most SCA "awards" are actually memberships in orders.
#They are not awarded by the Society, they are simply recognized by the entire Society. They are awarded by [[King]]s and/or [[Queen]]s of individual Kingdoms. (AoA's may also be awarded by [[Landed]] [[Prince|Princes/Princessess]].)

Many Kingdoms will tie a [[Kingdom level award]] to a Society award. This can be done with either AoAs or GoAs, Patents being reserved to the Peerages alone. Plain AoAs are fairly standard SCA wide, but how and when GoAs are awarded varies a lot from place to place (see [[InterKingdom Anthropology]]). In some places a plain "Grant of Arms" is seldom awarded, it is usually granted as part of a Kingdom award that is given for a more specific achievement; in some Kingdoms, GoAs are almost never awarded at all; and in some places naked GoAs are not unusual at all, often being given to folks like ex-Kingdom [[officer]]s.

It is worth noting that not all Kingdoms have [[Kingdom Level Award]]s that carry GoAs, although I believe that all the Kingdoms have AoA level awards.

The [[William Blackfox Award]] might, in some ways, be considered a "Society Level Award" but it is not a "Society Level Award" as the term is usually used, since it is not bestowed by the [[Crown]], does not carry membership in an [[Order]] and, in fact, has no real place in the medieval structure of the SCA.

From the [[13th century]], in some places, the term '''journeyman''' was used to describe someone who had completed their [[apprentice]]ship in a [[trade]] and thus having been accepted into a [[guild]].

He was entitled to earn a salary and typically worked from dawn to dusk, six days a week and lived in his [[master]]'s home.

To advance to [[master]] he must have produced a masterpiece and must have used his own [[tool]]s, raw materials and time in order to produce this work. This masterpiece would then needed to be accepted by the master of the [[guild]] and then he would be accepted so long as the area would sustain another master economically.

The '''Principality of Insulae Draconis''' encompasses the [[SCA]] [[shire]]s of the [[United Kingdom]] and [[Ireland]] as well as an [[incipient]] [[stronghold]] in [[Iceland]]. Insulae Draconis is part of the [[Kingdom of Drachenwald]].

== History ==

After many long years of attempting to unite themselves under a single name and [[banner]], these 11 [[groups]] were granted the right to form a [[Crown Principality]] in June [[2003]].

In November 2003 [[Sir]] Michael de Brad travelled from the noble [[Shire of Harpelestane]] and became the first [[Viceroy]] with [[Duchessa]] Alessandra Melusine Mantegna as his [[Vicereine]].

As of [[2008]] ([[A.S. XLIII]]), the Crown Principality began the process of becoming a [[Principality]]. At Battle of Brothers in the [[Shire of Flintheath]], on July 18th [[2009]] ([[A.S. XLIV]]), it was announced that the [[Board of Directors]] had approved Insulae Draconis's submission to become a full principality. The last viceregal [[tourney]] was held at [[Ffair Rhaglan]], in August, with the first [[coronet]] tourney being held in February [[2010]] (A.S. XLIV).

In February 2010 Sir William MacBrennan travelled from the noble [[Shire of Harpelestane]] and became the first [[Prince]] accompanied by his lady Mistress Æringunnr Yrsudóttir.

Hamlets are a type of unofficial [[group]] which is unique to [[Lochac]]. As such they have no formal recognition in [[Corpora]], but might be considered as a step between a [[Household]] and an official group such as a [[Canton]] or [[Shire]]. The idea is to provide small groups with some form of recognision without the reporting requirements that can lead to difficulty in filling the officers. This is not a [[peer|peerage]] order and was created decades before the [[Order of Defense]] was created. All the kingdoms in the [[Known World]] that have signed the '''White Scarf Treaty''' acknowledge the equivalency of [[order]] members from outside their [[realm]]. The Order of the White Scarf is the only massively inter-kingdom order.

The [[title]] commonly used is ''[[Don]]'' or ''[[Don|Donna/Doña]]'', but this may also used by any [[armiger]] as an alternative to [[Lord]] or [[Lady]]. Thus a member of the White Scarf of Ansteorra who moves to the Outlands is treated as a member of the order in the Outlands, and vice-versa. The same holds true of all White Scarf kingdoms.

In [[SCA]] usage, [[Squire]]s, [[Apprentice]]s and [[Protege]]s are sometimes collectively referred to as '''dependents'''. This is probably to avoid using the term [[vassal]] since not all relationships between a [[Peer]] and his/her dependents involves [[fealty]].

With the creation of the [[Order of Defence]] the situation becomes more complicated. With various [[Kingdom]]s already having established [[fencing]] [[tradition]]s it seems unlikely that there will be an SCA-wide term for the dependents of Masters of Defence. For example, the [[East Kingdom]] appears to be settling on [[provost]], while in [[Drachenwald]] that term is already in use by the Academy of Defence. Drachenwald may use [[scholar]], but that term also seems unlikely to have universal appeal.

The question of what to call someone who is a dependent of a double peer, a [[triple peer]], or a [[quadruple peeer]] sometimes arises. Some choose a single term from one of the above, expressing a focus on a given area. Some choose a portmanteau name such as [[apprentegé]] for an apprentice/protegé combination. [[User:AlexandreDavigne|Alexandre d'Avigne]] refers to his dependents as either 'apprentegé' or 'apprentegét' depending on whether or not they fence and [[cadet]] needs to be worked in. More generally, they were sometimes [[pandiscipula]] or 'universal students,' a term which gained some traction in the [[East Kingdom]], often in its shortened form of 'panda.'

The term 'stoplight' is sometimes used, at least in [[Drachenwald]] to refer to someone who is the dependent of a [[Knight]], [[Laurel]], and [[Pelican]], since the three nominal colours of their belts would be red, yellow, and green - the same as are used in traffic signals in many places.
