Pagan can mean, variously, pre-Christian (e.g. ancient Greek), or post-Christian but unconverted (to any type of monotheistic religion), e.g. Viking pagan, Baltic pagan, etc.

The last great pagan country in Europe was the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, which began its rise under Gediminas in 1316. While the country had contact with Christians before and after this period, Grand Duke Jogalia's conversion to Christianity in order to marry Queen Jadwiga of Poland in 1377 and his rise to the Polish throne in 1387, officially converted the country to Catholicism. This was an attempt to stop the Teutonic Order's crusades against Lithuania and Poland and did not succeed until 1411 with the Peace of the Thorn.

Pagan does not mean Heretic, as that refers to a follower of Christianity who professes a doctrine different to that of the ruling church. Neither does it mean an Infidel such as a Muslim or a Jew.

Pagans in the SCA
Many SCAdians are pagans (some prefer the term Neo-Pagan) in their mundane lives. Symbolism such as a pentacle (a mullet of five points within a circle), a moon-and-pentacle emblem, assorted goddess-imagery, or a Thor's Hammer often mean the wearer is a modern pagan, whether or not their persona is.

In SCA heraldry for much of its history, a pentacle was not a permitted heraldic device although it is period. Some Pagans resented this restriction, but it was comparable to a similar ban on the Cross Calvary. Remember, overt religious displays of any variety are not allowed, but whatever you do in your tent is your business. However, this restriction was lifted in 2009, and the pentacle and pentagram are now permitted heraldic charges.

Your SCA Persona is a Pagan
Owing to late Roman influence, Christianity was widespread throughout Europe and the Mediterranean before the medieval period. However, in more remote areas, such as Britain and Scandinavia it was either uncommon or had only thinly taken hold.

Norse personas, especially early in period would be pagan, as would Germanic ones. However, owing to Christian distrust of other religions, the social pressure from the ever-growing Christian community forced pagans to be regarded as the non-conformists.

Pagan personas are allowed in the SCA, so long as one isn't over-the-top about it, and does a certain amount of research to support their persona.

Alexander.a.la.Fontayne: Link updated

A consort is a member of the opposite sex that has a strong relationship with another person. This could mean they are married or it could just be a very strong friendship. Both people are regarded as each other's consort.

Historically, the consort of a noble would normally be granted a rank or the honorific Lord or Lady just by being their husband or wife. For instance, the wife of an Earl is a Countess. The wife of the King is called the Queen. However, in modern society the husband of a Queen is not necessarily a King (cf. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip).

Consorts in the SCA
SCA consorts are a regular part of the game that the SCA is. Many members have a consort for a variety of reasons. The most common is support and inspiration during combat and other competitions.

For some things, a fighter must have a consort. For instance, during Crown Tournaments each fighter must have a consort. The victor wins the title of King or Queen by right of arms and his or her consort will become Queen or King for their inspiration, grace and beauty.

Elsewhere, the decision whether or not to have a consort or be one is up to the individual. It is something that can be either taken seriously, or not. For some, their consort could be their boyfriend/girlfriend, husband/wife, for others it's simply a friend. Two fighters can be consort to each other. Either way, to formalise the friendship, favours are commonly exchanged and worn to display the linkage and help rally the fighter during combat. During court, should one of the partnership not be present, then the other acts as his/her representative.

Because being a consort means different things to different people, before coming a consort a few things should be discussed. For instance:
* How long do you plan to be consorts for? (One tourney? Until one of you leaves the SCA? Whatever?)
* What are each of your expectations of your roles? (water bearing, being present at all tournaments).
* If the person you are to be consort to is in a relationship, does the other person know? (some people can become awkward about such things).

Note also that when it comes to something like a Crown tournament or Coronet tournament, consorts may need to meet other requirements. To enter a Crown Tournament, both the fighter and his/her consort must be SCA members to be eligible. They must also understand and meet the Kingdom Law and Corpora requirements for participating in the tourney, and be willing to take on the responsibilities of becoming king/queen or prince/princess.

An informative site about this topic is How to be a consort (Atenveldt webpage)

A Pentagram is a mullet of five points voided and interlaced, commonly used in period heraldry. A Pentacle is a similar symbol, correctly blazoned A mullet voided and interlaced within and conjoined to an annulet.

It can be found in Christian churches like Notre-Dame de Paris where it symbolizes the five points from which Christ bled on the cross. In the poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Sir Gawain bore a pentagram upon his shield and it was also used to represent many other things, e.g. the five knightly virtues.

Both the pentagram and the pentacle are used by modern Pagans as a religious symbol, (usually with a single point upward) representing the Five Elements. The common usage of a reversed pentagram (two points upward) by Satanists had caused this charge to be added to the SCA College of Heralds' list of restricted charges beginning in 1973, however this ruling was overturned in 2009, and both the pentagram and pentacle symbols, both regular and reversed, are now permitted heraldic charges.

Numerical Superiority at Point of Contact allows a force to overcome a section of an enemy's force by overwhelming the individual men at the said point with a larger group of men.

Quite simply, the attacking force can deliver more blows than their opponents can fend off, rapidly diminishing the defending area's troop density and morale. This can be used to break through enemy lines when a flanking maneuver is an unavailable option, or to quickly destroy a large amount of troops.

A flanking maneuver also allows this advantage in most cases, as many men can attack the small quantity of men guarding the end of a battle formation. This tactic is favored by outnumbered commanders as a method to have numerical superiority where it is most needed, and lightly or not engaging the whole of the enemy force.

Wedge formations are often used to achieve this advantage.

This effect also allows a smaller force to hold a narrow area against a much larger foe, such as in bridge battles.

A cordial is a tonic made from plant matter (eg fruits, vegetables, leaves). Medieval cordials could be alcoholic or non-alcoholic, and were generally consumed for their presumed good effects upon the person's health. Sekanjabin is an good example of a simple non-alcoholic cordial.

Modern fruit cordials (concentrates of fruit juice and sugar which are diluted with water) available in Australia (but strangely rare in northern Europe and North America - the North American equivalent is a powder rather than a syrup, such as Kool-Aid) bear some similarity to certain medieval cordials, and are thus often provided to drink at feasts in Lochac.
