In most kingdoms "light fighter" refers to a fencer or rapier fighter.
However, in [[Lochac]] the term is used to describe [[combat]] [[engineer]]s, [[Banner Bearer|banner bearer]]s, [[scout]]s, missile combatants (such as [[archer]]s). They are also frequently referred to as ''lights'', due to them often having less [[armour]] than [[heavy fighter]]s.

Unlike heavies, lights don't do [[melee]] combat with [[rattan]] [[weapon]]s. Hence, they have less of a need for more than the [[minimum armour]]. For this reason, they must be clearly distinguished from heavy fighters during [[mixed battles]], so their [[helm]]ets bear either a large fluorescent triangle or a clearly visible [[plume]]. [[Lochac]] favours the plume method.

When people say '''light''' in the [[SCA]] they usually mean a [[light fighter]].
SCA [[heavy fighter]]s also call a blow "light" if they feel that it is not a legitimate shot to "kill" or "injury" them, if they were to be wearing the [[assumed armour]]. Fencers also call a blow "light" in many kingdoms if a touch was made without the minimum 4 pounds of pressure required for a kill.

'''Single Combat''' is [[combat]] between two [[fighter|fighters]], with no interference from others. In the [[SCA]] it typically occurs in a [[tournament]] setting, especially among [[light fighter|fencers]].

When more than two fighters oppose each other, it is called [[team combat]] or a [[melee]].

Single combat is often seen as an affair of [[honour]], far more so than in [[team combat]], although in the [[SCA]] fighters in both types of combat are expected to disport themselves [[chivalry|chivalrously]].
