Contrary to popular belief in the SCA, "rattan" is not a grass species closely related to bamboo, but is instead a species of palm. It's lighter than wood and is longer lasting. Rattan deforms and turns to mush rather than splitting and shattering. There are several different methods for shaping rattan.

This is the material of choice for most SCA weapons (although some others are used).
The Red Book of Hergest (Oxford, Jesus College, MS CXI = MS Welsh 1) or the Llyfr Coch Hergest, is one of the best known extant medieval Welsh manuscripts. Dating from somewhere around 1400 CE, the text comprises one of the sources for the Mabinogion.

The book also provided the fundamental inspiration for the Red Book of the Halflings in Lord of the Rings.
Woad is an annual Old World plant (Isatis tinctoria) in the mustard family, formerly cultivated for its leaves that yield a blue dye, one of the most valuable dyestuffs (or a good green dye when combined with a yellow dye).

Said to have mild hallucinogenic properties, and usually mixed with other psychoactive substances when used as body paint (such as when going into war). Is absorbed through the skin.

Incidentally, it is also what the kid from H.R. Puff-n-stuff says instead of road.
