The name comes from the [[Old English]] ''sweord'' (or to Old [[High German]] ''swert'') which means, roughly, "a wounding tool". Simply put, a sword is a (primarily) [[metal]] [[weapon]] with one or two cutting edges and a place to grip it at one end. A sword primarily consists of the [[blade]] and the [[hilt]].

==Blade==
The ''blade'' of a sword usually tapers to a point, and is usually sharpened along one or both edges. [[Europe]]an swords tend to be ''double-edged'' and ''straight-bladed'', allowing for a "[[cut and thrust]]" approach. [[Japan]]ese swords are famously single-edged and curved for better control and effect when slashing. The length of the blade can vary greatly, but generally, the longer the cutting edge of the [[blade]], the more emphasis is placed on "cutting" and less on "thrusting", a function of the weight and length of the weapon. Some European sword-blades are an almost uniform width for most of their length, others taper markedly over their entire length. The preferred shape of the blade in Europe changed depending on period and location. This is an interesting contrast to early-[[medieval]] European swords which tended to be shorter and lacked broad [[crossguard]]s. ==Sword Shapes==

A short pointed double-bladed [[knife]], commonly carried in period.

During the [[middle ages]] this [[weapon]] was primarily used in what some now refer as a ''reverse grip''. ie hilt up and point down. During the [[renaissance]] and later, the dagger came to be held point up in the manner of a [[knife]] except that the blade would be twisted in the hand so that the thumb rested against the flat of the [[blade]].

Hilts of earlier daggers were simple and might be of the bollock type (having a [[guard]] that resemble testicles), [[rondel]] type or others. [[Renaissance]] dueling daggers might have curved quillions, broad hand guards, elaborate [[basket hilts]] or other furniture resembling a sword. These types of daggers have become commonly known as a [[Main Gauche]]. This basket hilt was placed slightly different to [[basket hilt]]s on [[sword]]s as the guard would often be symetrical and on the face of one side of the [[sword]] rather than the edge.

Blades varied (between times and cultures) to encompass from the ''stiletto'' -- thin and needle-shaped -- to the ''cinqueada'', almost five-fingers broad (hence the name) at the hilt, which reduces down to a point quite quickly. [Interestingly (or not) both of these originated from [[Italy]].]

It was thought of by some as being a "poetic" weapon of choice for [[assassin]]s.

A '''buckler''' is a small [[shield]], used in both [[heavy]] and [[rapier]] [[combat]]. They are usually between 8 and 12 inches in diameter, and primarily constructed of [[metal]] and sometimes had [[leather]] coverings. They were in common use from at least the [[13th century]] and were common sights for hundreds of years.

While historically most bucklers were round and may or may not include a boss SCA fencers have developed a number of other shapes and innovations. Most common of those adaptations are other shapes such as square, rectanglular and kite shields.

The earliest surviving fencing manual [[I.33|Royal Armouries I.33]] demonstrates the use of this device with an [[arming sword]].

Of the shields ''per se'', it is probably the lightest, and easiest to move about. But, given that it is usually gripped by a handle across its back, it deprives its bearer of the use of the shield hand. That said, it is one of the easiest to attempt to have your opponent do a "nose-butt" on, just by putting it in the way. It also allows for a quite vicious back-hand rim-blow which could break the nose.

In many [[SCA]] [[kingdom]]s, [[fencing|fencers]] may be entered into the '''Order of the White Scarf''', if in the eyes of the [[Crown]], they have achieved the equivalent level of expertise and behaviour in fencing as that of a [[knighthood]] in standard [[combat]]. They are given a [[white]] scarf to wear to signify their membership which is an allusion to the white [[belt]]s worn by [[knight]]s.

Along with the level of experience being equivalent to Knights in [[fighting|armored combat]], White Scarves take new fighters under their wing in the same way. While titles for these fighters vary they are most commonly referred to as [[Cadet]]s and perform much the same function for their White Scarf as a [[Squire]] does to a Knight. Cadets wear a [[red]] scarf in the same way that squires wear a [[red belt]].

This is not a [[peer|peerage]] order but many of the kingdoms in the [[Known World]] that have signed the White Scarf Treaty acknowledge the [[rank]] of [[order]] members from outside their [[realm]]. Members are normally given a [[Grant of Arms]] on entering the order. The [[title]] commonly used is ''Don'' or ''Donna'', but this is also used by [[Order of the Pelican|Pelican]]s and [[Order of the Laurel|Laurel]]s as a [[Spanish]] [[alternate titles|alternative]] to [[Master]] or [[Mistress]]. Collectively members of the Order of the White Scarf are known as Defenders of the White Scarf (DWS in [[Armorial]]s) or simply White Scarves.
