The Barking Spyder is the oldest Pyrate ship in the SCA, being over 30 years old, and makes its home port in the [[Barony of al-Barran]]. The ship is currently led by Captain Lord Gargamont of Augustine with Lord Long John Thomas as first mate. The crew fluctuates between 20 and 35 active members.

'''Households''' are groups within the [[SCA]], usually based around an interest in certain areas of SCA endeavour, or friendship groups (or both!). Sometimes a [[peer]] will form a household that includes his/her [[apprentice]]s/[[protege]]s/[[squire]]s. Unlike other [[groups]], such as a [[barony]], Households aren't based on geography (although members of a household may be from a particular geographical area), they are not official [[groups]] of the [[Society]], and any "[[membership|membership requirements]]" of a household are at the discretion of the household. A household cannot hold official meetings or [[events]], but they are more than welcome to run events on behalf of the official group. They may include or exclude anybody they like, whereas an official group cannot do this.

They can be a great support network, and often the activities of the household will extend beyond SCA. Another way to look at it is that a household is your "family" and the group the [[village]]/[[hamlet]] that you live in.

You do not have to be a part of any household, and just because someone is a part of a particular household does not mean that you can't hang out with them. You can even start your own household if you want to!

Examples of households in and around [[Stormhold]] include [[House Reverie]] (based around Sir [[Antoine le Reveur]] and his squires), House [[Woodrose]] (mainly an [[Arts and Sciences]] household of old broken down hacks encumbered by offspring with a few who pretend to fight once in a while when the injuries and venerability allow), Unnamed (another mostly A&S household) and [[the Axemen]] (a fighting household that is mostly demographically based around younger members with a few old, wise heads attempting to control the chaos).

Other better known households in the [[Kingdom of Lochac]] include [[Attica]], [[Drakkar]], [[DX]], and [[Descartes]].

Over in [[Drachenwald]], the [[Brighthelm]] household claim to be a 'hive of scum and villainy' who are always found as far from high table as possible in spite of having as members a number of local, regional and [[kingdom]] [[officer]]s.

In [[Gleann Abhann]], [[Clan Marshin Fayne]] is a collection of five households: [[House Smoking Tankard]], [[House Storm]], The [[Barra Export Company]] (Ship's Company), [[House Ishee]], and [[House Golden Panther]]. They are held together under the twin bounds of [[service]] and [[revelry|revelrie]].

In [[Ansteorra]], [[House Arkham]] is a democratic group loosely based on medieval merchant Guilds/Households. Their interests are [[Archery]] (target and combat), Service, A&S, Merchanting, Siege and whatever else strikes their interests.

A '''rapier''' is a slender, sharply pointed, two-edged [[sword]] with a blade at least 90 [[centimetre]]s in length and generally possessing both distal and profile taper, often sporting an elaborate [[hilt]] and hand-[[guard]]. The SCA uses [[reproduction rapier]]s in "heavy rapier" fencing.

The rapier developed in the second half of the [[16th century]] as a modification of what is now known as the "cut-and-thrust" style [[sword]]. It was slimmer and nimbler than the thrusting [[broadsword]], a feature that enabled it to grow longer, and increased the usefulness of thrusting attacks thanks to its reach.

The rapier became popular in [[Europe]] in the 16th century primarily as a weapon for civilian use. In parallel to the rapier, other weapons were developed for use in war in response to the increasing protection offered by fully articulated plate [[armour]]. These included the [[estoc]] and many speciality [[polearm]]s-- such as the later versions of [[halberd]].

As [[plate armour]] became obsolete or shrunk in size due to the increasing use of [[firearm]]s in the late [[16th century]] and the beginning of the [[17th century]], the rapier, in various modified forms, gained usefulness on the battlefield. During the [[17th century]] the cup hilt was added to the rapier giving the hand increased protection again thrusts.

The rapier is capable of both slashing and thrusting attacks, but the style of fighting popular during its advent and heyday favoured the thrusting attacks we popularly associate with "[[fencing]]".

The rapier's slimmer cousin, the [[smallsword]] (reproduced using its descendant, the modern [[foil]]), is the sword most often associated with the [[duel]]s of [[honour]] depicted in [[literature]] and movies, such as ''[[The Three Musketeers]]''.

In those kingdoms that utilize both epees and rapiers they are respectively called "light" rapier refering to foil or epee and "heavy" rapier refering to schlager and on a limited basis back and side sword. In [[Lochac]], 'rapier' also refers to the in-house [[fibreglass rapier|fibreglass]] blades.
