A marshal is high-ranking royal military advisor. For some kingdoms, the Marshal is the chief of staff for the military forces (cf. the modern Field Marshal rank).

William Marshall was an Earl Marshal of particular note.

Marshals in the SCA
A marshal is in charge of all combat-related SCA activities. Depending on what type of marshal they are, their responsibilities may include being in charge of safety on the field (both tournament and war), carrying out armour inspection, authorisation of new fighters and keeping up-to-date with society combat laws.

Types of Marshals
Marshals exist in two forms for all types of SCA combat. First are the Field Marshals who are charged with maintaining safety and order on the field and performing armor inspections. Any individual in the society can learn to be a field marshal and does not need to be an active combatant to master the craft. The second form of Marshaling is the Authorizing Marshal who will administer the qualification tests as required by the appropriate kingdom before a fighter can recieve authorization to participate in tournaments and battles for their chosen style of combat. Authorizing Marshals can be chosen through a variety of methods but the predominate method seems to be apointment by the Kingdom level Marshal.

Marshal Hierarchy
The kingdom marshal is commonly titled the Earl Marshal. In many kingdoms there is a subordinate Marshal called the Kingdom Rapier Marshal (KRM). Depending on the size of the Kingdom the Earl and Kingdom Rapier Marshals may appoint regional assistants to perform in their stead when time or money does not allow them to travel to an event. Many local groups will also appoint a Knight Marshal (this individual does not need to be a Knight and will not be addressed as Sir if they are not a member of the Chivalry) and Rapier Marshal to lead local activities. In smaller groups the Knight and Rapier Marshal may be the same person whereas in larger groups they will most likely be different individuals.

Marshal Devices
The symbol for the marshallate is a pair of crossed golden swords on a black field. The rapier section of the marshallate is a pair of crossed golden rapiers on a black field.

Marshalling
As well as referring to the activities of a marshal, a herald may also indulge in marshalling, which in his case means sorting out coats of arms and other blazons.

The Barking Spyder is the oldest Pyrate ship in the SCA, being over 30 years old, and makes its home port in the Barony of al-Barran. The ship is currently led by Captain Lord Gargamont of Augustine with Lord Long John Thomas as first mate. The crew fluctuates between 20 and 35 active members.

Organization
The Barking Spyder is organized along the lines of a tradtional sailing vessel with a Captain in charge and seconded by his first mate in the rank of Commander. There is also a ships master who is charged with provisioning the ship or in this case making and maintaining (with ample help from the crew) the sail walls, cannons and other materials that make the Pyrat camp distinctive. Below these three vital positions are additional officer positions such as the Surgeon and Gunner who are Lieutenants, and a Pilot who is an Ensign. All of these positions have mates from the crew who they train in their specific duties and that can assist or back fill the position when the officer is otherwise preoccupied with real life or other pressing ships business. Below these officers are a number of petty officers like the Cook, the Sergeant of the Archers, and Sergeant at Arms, all Master Chiefs. Below them are the regular full members of the crew who may or may not be mates to any given position. Finally are the Anchors of the ship who are prespective members of the crew going through a probationary period where they learn how to handle the ships equipment (ex putting up and tearing down sail walls) and getting to know each member of the crew.

SCA Activities
Many crew members of the Barking Spyder are active members of the Rapier community in al-Barran including Lord JT Whoreschum as the Baronial Rapier Marshall (BRM). There is a growing interest among the crew in heavy weapons fighting and archery as well. Those members of the crew who fight at Estrella War in either light or heavy weapons are given a Sharkstooth and those that are active archers are awarded the Whales Fluke.
