Elizabethan clothing refers to the distinctive clothing during the reign of Elizabeth I.

Elizabeth loved jewelled clothes and left over 2,000 decorated dresses hanging in her wardrobe when she died.

Most ordinary people wore clothes similar to those of the rich and fashionable people but they were simpler and made from cheap materials like wool or linen. Children were usually dressed in smaller versions of their parents' clothes, although a portrait of Sir Walter Raleigh with his son shows Raleigh wearing a ruff, whereas his son wears the wide collar that was to become popular after the death of Elizabeth.

Rich Elizabethan women wore a lot of clothes each day. They wore a thick petticoat. Over this went a corset and a skirt. The skirt was held up by hoops and/or padded at the hips. An outer bodice and skirt or a fine dress went over this and on top of that there was a dressing gown or coat, which went down to the floor.

Rich men wore a linen shirt and a tight-fitting jacket called a doublet. Over there was another jacket which came out over the hips. They wore stockings and padded breeches instead of trousers. Most wore a velvet or fur hat.

The Ruff
The most distinctive element of Elizabethan clothing is the ruff. Ruffs were worn around the neck or wrists and generally became larger later in the Elizabethan era.

Each ruff could contain up to 3,000 pins and it is said that when young ladies were dancing with young men at balls they were afraid to sneeze incase the pins shot out and stabbed the young man. It could take up to 3 hours making a ruff.

The Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands is a SCA branch that geographically includes greater Pittsburgh and part of southwestern Pennsylvania. The Debatable Lands is the oldest and largest barony in the Kingdom of Æthelmearc, the region covering western New York, most of Pennsylvania outside the Harrisburg-Philadelphia corridor, and West Virginia.

The Barony-Marche also proudly includes two smaller branches within its borders: the College of Cour d'Or (Pittsburgh-area colleges and universities) and the Canton of Steltonwald (Beaver County, PA).

The Debatable Lands is traditionally considered the "home" group of the Pennsic War between the East and Middle Kingdoms. Geographically, Pennsic is located within the lands of the Shire of Sunderoak, a former canton of the Debatable Lands.

The Debatable Lands is home to more than 250 members, including many Pelicans, Laurels and Knights. It is particularly known for its talented musicians, costumers, scribes, cooks and fencers.
Having become a Kingdom in September A.S. XXXII, Æthelmearc is the fifteenth oldest in the Known World. Geographically it consists of West Virginia, Western & Central Pennsylvania, and Western & Central New York.

History
As with other kingdoms that were formerly remote parts of other realms, there was much resentment in some parts of Æthelmearc that the royalty of the East Kingdom rarely visited. There was also a certain amount of heat around the idea of Æthelmearc becoming a kingdom, perhaps because Æthelmearc is the site of the Pennsic War between the East Kingdom and the Midrealm. Eventually, the Pennsic Treaty was signed; Æthelmearc agreed not to interfere in the running of the event and the East and Midrealm agreed that Æthelmearc would be kept informed.

Other events held in Æthelmearc which are familiar to non-residents include the Festival of the Passing of the Ice Dragon, which features an arts and sciences pentathlon competition, and Æthelmearc War Practice, held on the same site as Pennsic.

Groups
Æthelmearc is home to Myrkfaelinn, the only Independent Dominion in the SCA. The Board of Directors ruled that they owed fealty to no king, as their charter mentioned the then-king of the East by name.

The Baronies of Æthelmearc include: Barony-Marche of the Debatable Lands, Barony of the Rhydderich Hael, Barony of Thescorre, Barony of Blackstone Mountain, Barony of St. Swithin's Bog, Barony of Delftwood, and Barony of the Endless Hills.

* Groups of Æthelmearc

Rulers
The King and Queen of Æthelmearc are chosen biannually in either the Spring Crown Tourney, held in May, or the Fall Crown Tourney, held in October. They are then crowned some months later at the Fall Coronation in September or the Spring Coronation in April respectively. All entrants in the Crown Tournament must be at least 21 years of age and have been a subject of Æthelmearc for at least one year. The tourney is usually fought as a double elimination tournament, although the format may be altered if there are 16 or fewer fighters in the list.

The current King and Queen of Æthelmearc are Malcolm MacEoghain and Tessa the Huntress.

Events
Aside from crown tournaments and coronations, major events held by Æthelmearc are:

* Pennsic
* Twelfth Night
* Æthelmearc Academy
* The Festival of the Passing of the Ice Dragon
* Æthelmearc War Practice

Awards
Aside from the standard Society level awards Æthelmearc has three tiers of awards. The Orders of High Merit, which convey a Grant of Arms, the Orders of Merit, which convey an Award of Arms and the non-armigerous awards.

The awards given by Æthelmearc can be found on Mistress Jessa's excellent page. At the present time, her list does not include the as-yet-unnamed Order of Merit for Martial Authenticity, which is given for having an authentic appearance in fencing or heavy fighting lists, or on the archery range.
