The marshal is in charge of all combat-related activities. Depending on what type of marshal they are, their responsibilities may include being in charge of safety on the field (both tournament and war), carrying out armour inspection, authorisation of new fighters and keeping up-to-date with society regulations.
A marshal is high-ranking royal military advisor. For some kingdoms, the Marshal is the chief of staff for the military forces (cf. the modern Field Marshal rank).

Most weapons used in the SCA are made out of rattan. Weapons are constructed according to guidelines laid out in the combat handbook. Nothing can be done to the rattan that changes its flexibility.

"Swords" are usually shaved down on the sides and out of the back blades with a plane or spokeshave, then covered with tape. Once taped, they cannot be less than 31.8 mm (1¼ inches) in diameter. Swords may be fitted with a thrusting tip, which is required to have at least 12.7 mm (½ inch) of progressive give, and may not double over. A basket hilt, quillions or the equivalent is required.

Thusting tips are usually contructed from closed cell foam with a leather collar around the area where the rattan and the thrusting tip are joined to prevent doubling over.

Axes are considered a mass weapon and thus cannot weigh more that 4 pounds. The head can be constructed out of several materials, the most common being closed cell foam (like a camp mat) and must have progressive give over the whole head.

Maces often have a foam head with rattan splints attached to the outside, this is then taped over and is usually attached to a handle(haft) that is relatively short and is also considered a mass weapon

Two handed weapons such as the glaive, halberd and great sword are all mass weapons and have many different methods of construction.

It is a good idea to shape the handle of your weapon so that you can tell if you are hitting with the "blade" or the "flat" of your weapon.

Ransoms were commonly paid for nobility captured in battle, or as a result of losing combat in a tournament. This ransom could be monetary or simply the possessions, armour and/or horse of the combatant.

The SCA tries to recreate this in various ways. One is a special melee scenario where every combatant is given a ransom value and a starting 'fund' (commonly chocolate coins). If a fighter is defeated during the melee, then they must pay their worth in ransom to the victor/s. When the fund can no longer pay a ransom amount, then the fighter must withdraw from the melee.

The ransom value varies according to the rank and positions held by each fighter. Accordingly, royal peers are worth more than other peers, who are worth more than other fighters. There is a ransom melee each year at the William Marshall tourney in Stormhold.

Sometimes, a mysterious fairy in the form of royalty is seen bestowing wealth on those who whose funds are running low, but this can never be proven.

In this form of combat it is normal that a person may not kill from behind. However they may inform a person that they have been engaged from behind and that combatant should turn to meet that challenge. Melees generally do not allow the use of missile weapons, though there are some cases such as village football where this is allowed. The feast honours the memory of William Marshal, a man who was barely even noble, but who rose to become one of the most powerful people in the Angevin world. His skill at arms was one source of his renown, being particularly successful at Tourney. He was the Marshal of England for a number of kings.
Ildhafn is a Barony encompassing Auckland and Hamilton in New Zealand. The Hamilton region is known as the Canton of Cluain.

History
The Barony of Ildhafn was founded in 1994 in Auckland New Zealand when Marienna Jensdatter put a notice in a local games store, calling a meeting of interested parties to form an SCA group in Auckland. She had just returned from Canturbury Faire. The first meeting was held in a coffee store, and was attended by Marienna Jensdatter, Thyra Haroldsdottir, Cicilia Lyon, Inigo Missaglia, Lucrezia-Isabella di Freccia, Eleyne de Comnocke, Stefano d'Urbino [Please add/remove names from this list]. Estrid Henningsdatter was also involved from the very beginning.

Roheisa le Sarjent visited the group that was forming in Hamilton (Cloudy River) at Easter that year and a sizeable group went down to meet with her. She taught us a little of everything, and gave the group a very strong base to start from.

Ildhafn was elevated to Baronial status on the 21st of June A.S. XXXVIII by Cornelius and Morwynna, with Asbjorn Pedersen Marsvin and Marienna Jensdatter as founding Baron and Baroness.

Events
Ildhafn's first event was the Bloth held at mid-winter at the Univerity of Auckland functions room. It was small and a lot of fun. There were even some people who came just to help clean up. The next year the event moved across the road to the crypt at St. Pauls. The Bloth continued there for many years and hosted two weddings (Eleanor du Pre and Geoffey Lineye, and Asbjorn Pedersen Marsvin and Marienna Jensdatter). More recently it has been at the Danish Society House in Penrose.

Ildhafn's annual camping event began as the Border War, and was hosted alternately with Cloudy River on Labour Weekend for a number of years. It then transformed into St. Catherine's Faire and moved to a weekend later in November.

Twelvth Night was held for 9 years in Eleyne's mother's garden, but had to find a new home as she sold her house and moved to browner pastures in Wanaka. In 2004 it was held at the Lions' Hall in Waterview, where many small events are held.

May Day has been held most years, but has not been held for a couple of years now.

Ildhafn is scheduled to hold November Coronet in November A.S. XXXIX, the first Lochac crown event to be held in New Zealand.
