Trinovantia Nova is a Shire of the Kingdom of Ealdormere located in Southwestern Ontario, Canada. It is bordered by the Shire of The March of St. Martin and the Midrealm shire of Starleaf Gate to the west and the Ealdormere Barony of Ramshaven to the east. The Shire is centered on London Ontario, but has a strong membership in the nearby city of St. Thomas.

Originally, Trinovantia Nova was a Canton of the Barony of Ramshaven but has been an independant Shire for several years. There is currently an effort in the Shire underway to become a Barony.
As such, it has been variously applied to the Goths, the Norse, the Germans, the French, the English, the Welsh, the Irish, the Scots, the Huns, Pagans, Muslims, Hindus, Christians and just about anyone the speaker doesn't like.

The term barbarian comes from the ancient Greek barbaroi, which literally means "those who speak like sheep", an unflattering term for non-Greek-speakers. The ancient Greek definition of barbarian, therefore, was "anybody not Greek." This was similarly the origin of the name "Barbary Coast" for North Africa as they talked a non-European language there.

Because of a number of motion pictures, modern use of the word barbarian tends to refer to those persons of migratory inclination who wore furs and carried large swords.

Encompassing most of the province of Ontario, Canada, Ealdormere became the sixteenth kingdom of the Known World in October, A.S. XXXIII (1998). Before this, from A.S. XXIII (1988) to A.S. XXXIII, Ealdormere was a principality of the Midrealm, encompassing several pre-existing baronies.

Ealdormere's symbols are the Trillium (a three-pointed white flower common to the region) and the wolf. Ealdormereans often use the term "the Northlands" as a synonym for Ealdormere (this is possibly a reference to the Canadian national anthem, or to the local popularity of Norse personas).

By long tradition, Ealdormere always fights alongside the Kingdom of the Middle in the Pennsic War under their own banners.

History
Early Days

In A.S. IX, then-Count Finvarr de Taahe and others founded the Canton of Eoforwic in Toronto. This was the first SCA group in to be founded in Canada, and grew quickly. In A.S. XII, the Shires of Septentria and Skraeling Althing (both now baronies) are founded.

The Ban on Regions

As recorded in the third and fourth books of the Chronicles of Eoforwic., the creation of Ealdormere as a Crown Principality was a matter of some controversy. When the Eoforwic Pursuivant, James MacAndrews first submitted this proposal by letter in January A.S. XX (1986), King Alen Elegil of the Midrealm responded by calling a hurried meeting with his advisors. The so-called Washroom Curia (this Curia was widely rumoured to have been held in a public restroom at an event) resulted in the issuing of the infamous "Ban on Regions". Published in the April A.S. XX edition of the Pale, this edict attempted to halt the effort toward creating local regions within the Midrealm by forbidding the use of local "regional" organizations beyond those Shires and Baronies recognized by the Crown. Combined with a change in Kingdom Law raising the requirements for becoming a Crown Principality dramatically, the practical effect of the Ban was merely to alienate the people of Ealdormere by forbidding even the name "Ealdormere" from open use. The region of Northshield was also affected by the Ban.

Shortly thereafter, James Macandrews stripped of the office of Eoforwic Pursuivant by the Dragon Herald; while the reasons given were unrelated to his proposal, in Ealdormere it was widely seen as a punitive act done on the orders of King Alen. Rather than discourage the pro-principality faction, however, these events only strengthened an underground commitment to greater independance from the Midrealm. A number of poems and songs written during and after "the dismal days of silence" illustrate this point, in particular the popular and well-received "Doom of Ealdormere" by Baron Aedan.

While the Principality requirements would be slightly eased by King Alen in A.S. XXI, the Ban itself remained in effect until the 17th Pennsic War in A.S. XXIII (1988). At the War Court, King Corwin of the Middle granted a charter making Ealdormere a Crown Principality.

The effect of the Ban on Regions is still felt in many Ealdormerean traditions today. The King and Queen of Ealdormere are styled "Their Lupine Majesties", a reference to the spirit of the wolf which carried Ealdormere through the years of King Alen's proscription. Musical, poetic and bardic references to the time of the Ban on Regions abound, and Ealdormereans remain fiercely proud and protective of their independance.

This section is based on information in the Chronicles of Eoforwic.

Crown Principality

In A.S. XXVI, the first Army of Ealdormere, under Prince David I and Princess Tangwystl, marched to the Pennsic War alongside the army of Calontir. Ealdormere has sent an army to Pennsic under its own banners every year since.

198.96.80.15: /* Leadership */

An Army is a large grouping of land-based soldiers and their supporting personnel; an equivalent term for seagoing fighters is a Navy.

Armies can be as simple as a mob or raiding party with little to no leadership, or a rigidly hierarchal organization with clearly defined roles for all members.

Professional standing armies, such as the Roman legion or the modern army, were comparitively rare in period. While medieval armies were made of warriors who trained their whole lives to fight, unit discipline and organization tended to be limited to personal bonds of fealty. In addition, many feudal armies had an extremely limited term of service, typically forty days.

Leadership
Most armies are headed by a single commanding officer. Authority can be delegated to lieutenants, who are in charge of individual divisions or units of the army. In large fighting forces (like what would be found at an SCA war), there might be more than one level of leadership, with orders going from the general to a lieutenant, to a sergeant, to the individual soldiers. This is referred to as the chain of command.

Historically, it was generally agreed that the better the leadership of an army is, and the more responsive the soldiers on the field are to that leadership, the better an army will perform on the field. For this reason, generals tend to be accomplished fighers, who studied tactics and military theory.

Training and discipline
As with any hierarchical organization, if individuals in the organization do not accept their station the performance of the whole unit will suffer. For this reason, most modern professional armies undergo extensive training to the aim of instilling discipline, training in specific roles, and an esprit d'corps.

Armies in the SCA
Most SCA armies tend to be fairly well-trained (better than many armies in period, at least, since SCA fighters have extensive practice with their weapons). SCA fighters also have more in common with medieval warriors that modern soldiers do, since SCA fighters are volunteers and largely lack the discipline of a professional soldier.

Armies in the SCA are usually raised by Kingdom or Principalities, although some are raised by Baronies or Shires. Kingdom armies tend to be made of units comprised of forces fighting by barony shire or canton, although large households often fight as discrete units.

Most Kingdoms in North America send armies to the annual Pennsic War

The complexity of the team combat often depends on the context: whether it is melee at a tournament or at a war.

Making large groups fighters work together effectively is one of the most difficult jobs of a commander.

Buddhism began in Northern India around the 5th Century BC. It made impressive progress east and south, but only made it as far as Afghanistan to the west. Consequently Western Europe had only minimal contact with it until the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

One noticeable exception is the story of the Buddha. It was told along the trade routes that made there way west. By the time it reached Europe it had mutated into the story of Barlaam and Josaphat. Josaphat is the name Buddha was given, having been derived from Boddhisatva, or he who shall become Buddha. Barlaam was a Christian monk who aided Josaphat in his conversion.

The story became well enough known in Europe for Josaphat to be recognised in the thirteenth century Golden Legend or Live of Saints. In the 16th century the Buddha became a fully canonised saint with a feast day on the 27th of November. By the 19th century however the link between the story of Josaphat and Buddha was pointed out and he has since been desanctified.

In period heraldry animals were a frequent charge. Although some animals, such as the lion were heavily favoured, there is still a huge number of animals, both real and imaginary, which were used. Note that the depiction of some animals in heraldry differed from their natural forms, and these are known as heraldic beasts.

Animals
Creatures of the sea
* Dolphin
* Escallop : A rippled shell, like a scallop.
* Sea dragon : A wingless dragon, a sea serpent.
* Seahorse
* Unicornate Seahorse : An SCA only creature, it is a seahorse with a single horn, as if a unicorn.

Land Animals
* Bear -- Generally the heraldic bear looks very like the real thing, as opposed to some beasts which are highly stylised.
* Dog
* Heraldic lion -- which is sometimes also referred to as an leopard, especially in the English royal arms.
* Coney -- another name for rabbit.
* Stag -- a deer with antlers, a male.

Insects and reptiles
* Beetle
* Moth
* Turtle

Humanoids
Airborne creatures
* Dragon
* Eagle

Other
* Unicornate sea-pegasus : An SCA-only monster.

<hr>
Postures
* affronte
* addorsed
* couchant : Lying down with head erect
* courant : Running.
* displayed : spread eagle, usually birds
* dormant : Lying down with head lowered, as if sleeping.
* embowed
* hauriant
* naiant
* passant
* rampant : standing on 1 leg with other 3 legs raised to one side
* salient
* segreant : as rampant, but for birds
* sejant : Sitting down on hind legs, forelegs straight, head up.
* statant : standing on 4 legs
* tergiant
* uluant : With head up, as if howling at the moon (generally only with a heraldic wolf). Generally the body is sejant.
* urinant
* volant
* volant-en-arriere

Special Postures
* pissant

<hr>

Bits of animals
Heralds also tended to introduce bits of animals into their designs (apparently without asking if this was natural, or acceptable to the animal involved). Thus one has heads (stags and bears were popular), paws (especially of bears), faces (leopards especially, for some reason; some with fleur-de-lys in their mouths), and so on. One even comes across animals cut up into bits -- a torso, with limbs and head arranged round it -- presumably to make out how bold a hunter the bearer of the arms must have been.

Maille is the period-correct term for what is commonly known as "chainmail" in modern times. Maille is made of many interlocking metal rings, and one of the most common forms of armour was the maille hauberk.

Manufacture
In Europe, the 1-to-4 pattern was almost completely dominant, with 1-to-6 being seen very rarely. In East Asia (primarily Japan), chainmail was also common, but here several more patterns were utilized and an entire nomenclature developed around them. In the Middle East, yet other patterns were developed and often combined with metal plates linked in with the rings.

Historically, the rings composing a chainmail armour would be riveted or welded shut, to reduce the chance of the rings splitting open when subjected to a thrusting attack or a hit by an arrow.

In modern re-enactment and live-action roleplaying games, split sprung steel washers are sometimes used. Usually a two pairs of pliers are used to bend the washers open and closed whilst "knitting" the chainmail. The resulting mail is usually heavier than traditional wire-wound mail.

Members of the New Varangian Guard make their maille from spring steel rings. By using spring steel, you can use a finer gauge of wire and still retain strength. However, for truly tough and light maille, you cannot go past riveted maille.

In the SCA, you will find people whose skill at making historically accurate mail varies right across the spectrum; from amateur to true artisan.
