Founded in February, A.S. XVIII, Calontir is the tenth oldest Kingdom in the Known World. It was formerly a Principality of Midrealm. Geographically it consists of Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Northwestern Arkansas.

Calontir has some notoriety for being the only Kingdom in the SCA that does not allow rapier combat.

Calontir holds the Lilies War in or around June every year.

History
Calontir began as a Principality within the Middle Kingdom in 1981-2 (A.S. XVI) and on May 29, 1984 (A.S. XVIII) became the tenth Kingdom of the SCA. The first King and Queen of Calontir were known as Chepe lOrageux and Arwyn Antaradi.
Events
Calontir hosts the yearly Lilies War, a June camping event lasting over a week where about a thousand SCA members gather for combat and other activities. The first Lilies War was held in 1987 at Perry Lake in Kansas. Since 1992, the event has been held at Smithville Lake in Missouri.

169.147.3.25: /* Heraldic Titles and Ranks */

<div style="float:right; margin: 0 0 1em 1em;"></div>
Medieval heralds served as envoys, granted devices (variously called arms, coats of arms, and devices), oversaw the provision of heraldic trappings for funerals, and provided support at tournaments. SCA heralds provide support at tournaments by announcing the names of the combatants, serve as the voice of the Crown during courts and as otherwise needed, make announcements at events, provide information to resolve questions of precedence and protocol, and help others to find appropriate names and armory for their chosen culture and time period.

Heraldic Organization
The first level of SCA heraldic organization is the kingdom level; each kingdom has a College of Heralds. Many SCA groups have a designated heraldic officer. In baronies, principalities, and kingdoms, this officer is usually the designated voice of the ruling nobility. In principalities and kingdoms, the officer is called the Principal Herald, and usually has some administrative responsibilities, including the appointment of deputies to oversee the processing of name and device submissions and maintenance of the order of precedence. (These functions are not always separate from those of the kingdom in principalities.) In baronies and smaller groups, the heraldic officer is usually the default person to make announcements and to assist group members who wish to submit names and devices. However, any herald can assist with these tasks.

The process of providing heraldic credentials varies from kingdom to kingdom. Some kingdoms have a system of training and testing heralds for advancement or to issue warrants; others simply issue warrants to persons who provide proof of membership and demonstrate an interest in heraldry.

The second level of SCA heraldic organization is the Society level. The SCA College of Arms administers heraldry throughout the SCA. Its head is the Laurel Sovereign of Arms; the Laurel Queen of Arms is currently Countess Elisabeth de Rossignol. Warranted heralds are usually automatically members of their kingdom's College of Heralds; however, membership in the College of Arms is limited to the Laurel Sovereign of Arms, their designated deputies and staff, and those who provide commentary on name and device submissions. Some kingdoms designate a specific herald to provide commentary on submissions.

Presently, there is a deputy for name registration (Pelican Queen of Arms Margaret Makafee) and armorial registration (Wreath Queen of Arms Jeanne Marie Lacroix). The Morsulus Herald maintains the Society Ordinary and Armorial, a record of all names and devices registered in the Society.

Heraldic Titles and Ranks
There are a number of heraldic ranks and titles, both at the kingdom and Society levels. In some kingdoms, a trainee herald is called a Cornet; once the Cornet has passed a basic test and has gained experience in the various fields of heraldry they are accorded the rank of Pursuivant, while senior heralds are referred to as "Herald." In other kingdoms, these titles are based solely on the heraldic office an individual holds. For example, a kingdom may choose to style all deputies to the principal herald as "herald," and all local heraldic officers as "pursuivant." Heralds who hold no particular office are frequently referred to as pursuivants-at-large. Finally, the Laurel Sovereign of Arms may choose to name heralds who have provided long and dedicated service to the College of Arms "Herald Extraordinary." A listing of these individuals may be found here.

Historically, heraldic titles could come from place names (Richmond Herald), surnames (Chandos Herald), charges (Rouge Dragon Pursuivant), and order names (Garter King of Arms). (These heraldic titles are all English.) Heraldic titles in the SCA are frequently taken from the name of a charge on a group's arms (e.g., Triskele Herald of Trimaris), from documented or conjectural heraldic charges, sometimes from the name of an order (e.g., Pelican Sovereign of Arms), occasionally from place names (Midlands Herald of the Middle), and hypothetically from surnames.

Historically, English heralds could use their heraldic titles as surnames; for example, in a 1541 lay subsidy of London, two heralds are listed as "Master Richemond Harrord" and "Mr York Harrord"; in The True Use of Armorie (1592), the narrator refers to "a Herauld ... surnamed Faulcon" (perhaps corresponding to Falcon King of Arms). Anthony Wagner asserts this right for members of the English College of Arms in the 20th century; many SCA heralds with titles will frequently sign heraldic correspondence with their title (e.g. "Margaret Pelican"), or refer to colleagues this way.

Who is a Herald?
In the SCA, anyone can practice heraldry as an activity. Generally, you do not need a special office or title to help others choose names and research devices, herald a tournament, or make announcements at an event. The only activities limited to persons of a particular rank involve actually accepting and processing submission forms. This is because this duty involves working with money. Who may do this varies from Kingdom to Kingdom. Officially licensed Kingdom heralds are said to have a warrant.

Also, royalty, nobility, households, or any individual may retain someone as their personal herald for court, as a messenger, and other heraldic duties. Who this person is and what their duties are is strictly the prerogative of the "employer."

Heralds can frequently be identified because they wear tabards: garments which depict the arms of the person who employs them on the front, back, and sleeves. Only heralds should wear tabards; however, it is authentic for others to wear heraldic surcoats or gowns, depending on the time period and culture they seek to recreate. Tabards with baronial or kingdom arms may be part of the group's regalia; heralds who do not hold a specific office sometimes wear medallions, favors, or tabards with the SCA College of Arms logo shown above.

Households are groups within the SCA, usually based around an interest in certain areas of SCA endeavour, or friendship groups (or both!). Sometimes a peer will form a household that includes his/her apprentices/proteges/squires. Unlike other groups, such as a barony, Households aren't based on geography (although members of a household may be from a particular geographical area), they are not official groups of the Society, and any "membership requirements" of a household are at the discretion of the household. A household cannot hold official meetings or events, but they are more than welcome to run events on behalf of the official group. They may include or exclude anybody they like, whereas an official group cannot do this.

They can be a great support network, and often the activities of the household will extend beyond SCA. Another way to look at it is that a household is your "family" and the group the village/hamlet that you live in.

You do not have to be a part of any household, and just because someone is a part of a particular household does not mean that you can't hang out with them. You can even start your own household if you want to!

Master Iustinos Tekton, called Justin, has recently posted an educational article on SCA households. The article can be found here.

Households of the Known World
*Well known households in the Kingdom of Lochac include Attica, Drakkar, DX, and Descartes. For a larger listing of Lochac households, see Groups in Lochac.

*Households in and around Stormhold include House Reverie (based around Sir Antoine le Reveur and his squires), House Woodrose (mainly an Arts and Sciences household of old broken down hacks encumbered by offspring with a few who pretend to fight once in a while when the injuries and venerability allow), Unnamed (another mostly A&S household) and the Axemen (a fighting household that is mostly demographically based around younger members with a few old, wise heads attempting to control the chaos).

* In Ansteorra, House Arkham is a democratic group loosely based on medieval merchant Guilds/Households. Their interests are Archery (target and combat), Service, A&S, Merchanting, Siege and whatever else strikes their interests.

* The Kingdom of Æthelmearc has several great households as well as being home to the kingdom spanning Great Dark Horde and Dark Horde Moritu.

* Over in Drachenwald, the Brighthelm household claim to be a 'hive of scum and villainy' who are always found as far from high table as possible in spite of having as members a number of local, regional and kingdom officers, and the Household of Csikós Ló sponsors various heraldic-based membership scholarships.

* In Ealdormere notable households include: House DeTaahe, House Galbraith, and House Rivenheart. As in most kingdoms there are many, many others.

* In Gleann Abhann, Clan Marshin Fayne is a collection of five households: House Smoking Tankard, House Storm, The Barra Export Company (Ship's Company), House Ishee, and House Golden Panther. They are held together under the twin bounds of service and revelrie.

* The Middle Kingdom has many diverse households including fighting households such as Darkyard and Stahlgeist and service households like the Sisterhood of the Gilded Bee.

* In Calontir as in most kingdoms, there are many households. Some members have registered names and/or badges for their households...but such is not required. Amongst the households that have been created by Calontiri are: House Tÿ Wareine, Hus Eldrekr, Sisters of the Silver Thistle, Haus Calainar des Pennswalds, House Winter Wolf, House Farshore, House de Vernun, House Whiteraven, House Grimfalcon, House Greymoor, House Miskbridge, House Leatherwolf, House Hynnddyll, Maison de Verdegris, House Keystone, House of Hallowell, Maison de la Belle Rivière, House of the Pheasant Slayer, Maison du Chat Combattant, House Fierce, Household of the Dizzy Key, Castle of the Lost, House of the Lost Fen, House Woodshaven, House Rivencrag, House of the Rosed Arrow, House Barley Marsh, Kramolnikova, DomHafen Arianniwlog, Hrafnsheim, Household of Starrose, House of Serpent's Keep, House Silverbrand, Clann O Torr, Chateau du Lion Marin, Clan Genji and Hotel Forgotten Sea.

Households of the Known World
Examples of households in and around Stormhold include House Reverie (based around Sir Antoine le Reveur and his squires), House Woodrose (mainly an Arts and Sciences household of old broken down hacks encumbered by offspring with a few who pretend to fight once in a while when the injuries and venerability allow), Unnamed (another mostly A&S household) and the Axemen (a fighting household that is mostly demographically based around younger members with a few old, wise heads attempting to control the chaos).

Other better known households in the Kingdom of Lochac include Attica, Drakkar, DX, and Descartes.
For a larger listing of Lochac households, see Groups in Lochac.

* In Calontir, some households include: Hus Eldrekr, Sisters of the Silver Thistle, Haus Calainar des Pennswalds, Leatherwolf, House Hynnddyll and Clan Genji. As in most kingdoms there are many, many others.

* In the Outlands the oldest Pirate ship in the SCA, the Barking Spyder, docks in the Barony of al-Barran.

There are also a number of inter-kingdom households with members who live and participate in more than one kingdom, such as the Rozakii, Timberwolf, and Adlersburg households.
Heraldry is the medieval art and science that deals with the creation, use, and recognition of visual displays that identify an individual person, guild, town, office or other entity. This was typically done through much of the Middle Ages using a painted shield which bore a (largely) unique arrangement of division lines, and objects known as "charges". Early in the Medieval period, this "coat of arms" was unique to an individual, only becoming associated with a family in the late Renaissance.

In the SCA, heraldry is concerned with ceremonies and Courts, the crying of announcements and proclaimations, the pomp and circumstance of the Tournament, and the authentication and registration of members' persona names and arms or badges. These areas of interest give rise to the terms "court heraldry" and "field (or list) heraldry" (both also known as "voice heraldry") and "book heraldry" (which also includes the background work and research in arranging ceremonies).

In the SCA, modern and period worlds, heraldry tends to be governed by the rules set by a College of Arms.

In the SCA, modern and period worlds, heraldry tends to be governed by the rules set by a College of Arms.

In the SCA, modern and period worlds, heraldry tends to be governed by the rules set by a College of Arms.

Introduction
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v104/purplellamaboi/funny.jpg

My name is al-Sayyid Jibril ibn Najdah ibn zayd al-`Attar, a mid-fifteenth century Anatolian currently residing in the Shire of Deodar in the Kingdom of Calontir. I am the Pursuivant for the Shire of Deodar, a member of the Academy of St. Gabriel, a former heraldry student to HE Master Modar Neznanich, and apprentice to Master Mellitus of Rouncivale. Among my many interests and pursuits are: costuming, heraldry, glass bead making, herbalism, 'kumihimo' (Japanese cord braiding), target archery, and rapier combat. Additionally, I am a member of Clan Blue Feather.

Teaching
One of my favorite things to do in the SCA is teach...especially when it comes to teaching Newcomers to the Society. I currently teach the following classes at various RUSH events:

* Introduction to SCA Heraldry
* SCA Newcomer's Survival Guide to Camping
* Sumptuary Laws & Customs of Calontir
* Basic Persona Development
* Heraldic Badges: What Are They & How To Use Them
* Introduction to Glass Bead Making

Alternate Personas
* Jedidiah Glasmon (London, England)
-- Glasmon is in reference to my liking of glasswork...and I've always liked the name Jedidiah.

* Giudo di Niccolo Brunelleschi (Florence, Italy)
-- This has been my primary SCA persona up until September 2006...at which point I switched to Jibril.

Household
I also have informally started a personal Household within the Society, which is right now under the "working" name of Compagnia dell'Arcangelo Gabriele (or Company of the Archangel Gabriel). The Compagnia is founded upon the structure of the lay confraternities of Renaissance Italy, while focusing on the chivalric values of Chivalry (Courage), Honor (Honesty), Courtesy (Magnanimity), Charity (Generosity, Largesse), Justice (Mercy), Faith (Hope), and Humility (Nobility). These ideals I believe carry a lot of weight and bear great importance to what I believe to be appropriate for courtiers within the SCA.

The Compagnia is also gearing more towards a service Household. The current concept that is being worked with is that the Compagnia will one day be a page school for adult newcomers to the Society. More information as further developments take place....

Aside from myself, this Household consists of two other individuals at this time:
* Signora Imilia di Franco Rinaldi (Shire of Gwyntarian, of the Barony of Brendoken, in the Oaken Region of the Kingdom of the Middle)
* al-Sayidda Rayya bint Da'ud al-Zahra' (formerly known as Rayya Tsigane) (Barony of Mag Mor, in the Kingdom of Calontir)
* Dona Ines Alfon (alternately known as Bantiarna Mor inghean Chathail) (Barony of Forgotten Sea, in the Kingdom of Calontir)
* Herrin Miriam von Schwarzwald (Barony of Forgotten Sea, in the Kingdom of Calontir)
* Greta of Deodar (Shire of Deodar, in the Kingdom of Calontir)

SCA Timeline
I started in the Society in October of AS XXXI (1996 mundanely, or 1420 according to my persona's history) in the Shire of La Grande Tente. From there, I moved to the Shire of Deodar, where I spent quite a bit of time readjusting to my new home.

On December 11, 2004 (AS XXXIX), HE Master Modar Neznanich formally took me on as one of his students. This happened at the Barony of Forgotten Sea's Kris Kinder event.

On December 25, 2004 (AS XXXIX), His Lordship Padraic MacDubhghaille and Lady Anne of Walnut Grove invited me into their household, which I gladly accepted. With that, I am now a member of House ORU (Orphans 'R' Us).

On February 5, 2005 (AS XXXIX), Their Majesties Garick and Yasamin presented me with an Award of Arms at the Shire of Cum an Iolair's 20th Anniverary Clothier's Seminar event.

On April 20, 2005 (AS XXXIX), HE Master Modar Neznanich invited me into his household, House Leatherwolf, at Melon Wars in the newly elevated Shire of Flinthyll. I was most glad to accept the invitation.

On June 16, 2005 (AS XL), Their Majesties Tristram and Katrine called me forth into Grand Court at Lilies War XIX, where they requested my admitance into the Order of the Torse for service to the Kingdom of Calontir and the Shire of Deodar.

In August 2005 (AS XL), Hurricane Katrina hit the southern reaches of the Principality (soon to be Kingdom) of Gleann Abhann and the Kingdom of Meridies. As part of the relief efforst, I stepped up as the SCA Life Items Coordinator for the Kingdom of Calontir. I have been maintaining the Calon Relief website since then.

Additionally, in August 2005 (AS XL), my primary SCA name of Giudo di Niccolo Brunelleschi and my device of "Per pale embattled barry purpure and Or and gules, two lozenges in pale Or" were passed by the SCA College of Arms.

In December 2005 (AS XL), I joined the staff of the Royal University of Scir Havoc (RUSH) as a regent.

Additionally, in December 2005 (AS XL), my alternate name of Mishka Lamanov was passed by the SCA College of Arms.

In January 2006 (AS XL), I became the Deputy Kingdom Chatelaine.

As of March 25, 2006 (AS XL), I graduated from my heraldic studies under HE Master Modar Neznanich at the Spring Coronation of TRM Semjaka and Xorazne. Immediately following my graduation, I was then taken on as an apprentice to Master Mellitus of Rouncivale, focusing on glasswork & lampwork.

While disaster relief efforts in Calontir for Hurricanes Katrina and Rita ended back in February, TRM Semjaka and Xorazne saw a need to form a permanent Kingdom office of Disater Relief Coordinator as a proactive measure for future disaster relief needs. On April 1, 2006 (AS XL), Baron Jon, Kingdom Seneschal appointed me as Calontir's first Kingdom Disaster Relief Coordinator.

As of the May 2006 Letter of Acceptances and Returns, released in August 2006, the badge for my personal Household was registered: "(Fieldless) A cross of four lozenges conjoined quarterly gules and Or."

On September 9, 2006 (AS XLI), Her Majesty Xorazne Artsuni presented her Queen's Endorsement of Distinction for the Ideals of the Society to me.

* Introduction to SCA Heraldry
* SCA Newcomer's Survival Guide to Camping
* Sumptuary Laws & Customs of Calontir
* Basic Persona Development
* Heraldic Badges: What Are They & How To Use Them
* Introduction to Glass Bead Making

Alternate Personas
* Jedidiah Glasmon (London, England)

* Introduction to SCA Heraldry
* SCA Newcomer's Survival Guide to Camping
* Sumptuary Laws & Customs of Calontir
* Basic Persona Development
* Heraldic Badges: What Are They & How To Use Them
* Introduction to Glass Bead Making

Alternate Personas
* Jedidiah Glasmon (London, England)

__NOTOC__

Heraldry usually involves the creation and registration of armorial bearings, or devices. This is controlled by Colleges of Arms. In the SCA, heralds are also responsible for keeping track of awards, researching accurate medieval names, comp&egrave;re-ing tournaments, running ceremonies, and a multitude of other things.

These activities are usually divided into two main categories. Book heraldry involves anything to do with the registration of names and devices, and the organisation of ceremonies. Voice heraldry is announcing things.
