<div>Contrary to popular belief in the SCA, "rattan" is not a grass species closely related to bamboo, but is instead a species of palm [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rattan]. It's lighter than [[wood]] and is longer lasting. Rattan deforms and turns to mush rather than splitting and shattering. There are several different methods for shaping rattan.<br />
