Drachenwald is the SCA kingdom consisting of Europe (including Iceland), Africa, and the Middle East. It was earlier a principality of the East Kingdom. Reportedly, in the early 1970s it was called the Protectorate of Thairsis, but there are no written records of that. In like manner, the Shire of Vielburgen was reportedly the first formal SCA branch on this side of the Great Ocean, but there are no formal records of that either.

Note that the regions in Drachenwald are not as formal as in other kingdoms. They are purely administrative and may vary between kingdom officers.

Armour is protective plates or clothing meant to shield a human from intentionally inflicted harm. Armour has been in use for all recorded history, beginning with hides, leather, bone, progressing to bronze, steel, ballistic cloth, and ceramics. Armour has been primarily a way to protect oneself from harm in combat and military engagements.

Armour parts may be manufactured using a wide variety of materials and forms. During the Middle Ages, cloth, soft leather, boiled leather, chainmail and iron or steel plates were often used.

Armour might be covered or decorated in a number of ways, including:
* Applied- lateen, brass or silver
* Engraving
* Etching
* Fabric coverings - silk, damask and silk velvet for the rich and fustian for those who were not
* Painting -including slogans and heraldic designs
* Piercework - hearts, trefoils etc
* Scuplted shapes or forms- eg 'slashed' armours.Other decorations are also mentioned such as gold or pearls being used.
NB: It should be noted that these methods were used differently or not at all during different times in history, so research should be done before applying a covering to your armour.

In European history, common armour types were the lorica segmentata, the gambeson, the maille hauberk and later the full plate armour used by late medieval knights. In feudal Japan and throughout Asia, laquered lamellar armours were popular.

Households are groups within the SCA, usually based around an interest in certain areas of SCA endeavour, or friendship groups (or both!). Sometimes a peer will form a household that includes his/her apprentices/proteges/squires. Unlike other groups, such as a barony, Households aren't based on geography (although members of a household may be from a particular geographical area), they are not official groups of the Society, and any "membership requirements" of a household are at the discretion of the household. A household cannot hold official meetings or events, but they are more than welcome to run events on behalf of the official group. They may include or exclude anybody they like, whereas an official group cannot do this.
They can be a great support network, and often the activities of the household will extend beyond SCA. Another way to look at it is that a household is your "family" and the group the village/hamlet that you live in.

You do not have to be a part of any household, and just because someone is a part of a particular household does not mean that you can't hang out with them. You can even start your own household if you want to!

Examples of households in and around Stormhold include House Reverie (based around Sir Antoine le Reveur and his squires), House Woodrose (mainly an Arts and Sciences household of old broken down hacks encumbered by offspring with a few who pretend to fight once in a while when the injuries and venerability allow), Unnamed (another mostly A&S household) and the Axemen (a fighting household that is mostly demographically based around younger members with a few old, wise heads attempting to control the chaos).

Other better known households in the Kingdom of Lochac include Attica, Drakkar, DX, and Descartes.

Over in Drachenwald, the Brighthelm household claim to be a 'hive of scum and villainy' who are always found as far from high table as possible in spite of having as members a number of local, regional and kingdom officers, and the Household of Csikós Ló sponsors various heraldic-based membership scholarships.

In Gleann Abhann, Clan Marshin Fayne is a collection of five households: House Smoking Tankard, House Storm, The Barra Export Company (Ship's Company), House Ishee, and House Golden Panther. They are held together under the twin bounds of service and revelrie.

In Ansteorra, House Arkham is a democratic group loosely based on medieval merchant Guilds/Households. Their interests are Archery (target and combat), Service, A&S, Merchanting, Siege and whatever else strikes their interests.

In Ealdormere notable households include: House DeTaahe, House Galbraith, and House Rivenheart. As in most kingdoms there are many, many others.

In the Outlands the oldest Pirate ship in the SCA, the Barking Spyder, docks in the Barony of al-Barran.

There are also a number of inter-kingdom households with members who live and participate in more than one kingdom, such as the Rozakii, Timberwolf, and Adlersburg households.

Port (SCA Branch)
Ports are institutional branches based at a military installation in situations where groups of members will be detached for long periods, as with ships at sea.

Ports require:

* At least 5 members.
* At least 3 officers, including a Seneschal, an Exchequer, and one of the following: a Herald, a Marshal, or a Minister of Arts and Sciences. Local branches are encouraged to fill all the latter positions.
* A name registered with the College of Arms.
* Consensus among members in the area favoring establishment of the proposed branch.

The ?territory? of such branches is defined in terms of affiliation with the institution where they are based, not in terms of physical boundaries. Institutional branches may report directly to a kingdom, but if their institution is located within the borders of a branch of any other class, they report through that branch. They differ from other local branches in that they go dormant if membership falls below five (5), rather than being disbanded.
It is is a part of the Shire of Turmstadt in the German-Austrian Region of the Kingdom of Drachenwald. Although it is a fairly new branch (founded in 2002), it quickly came to prominence when the King, Queen, Kingdom Seneschal, and Kingdom Exchequer all lived here simultaneously (2005). Medieval heralds served as envoys, granted devices (variously called arms, coats of arms, and devices), oversaw the provision of heraldic trappings for funerals, and provided support at tournaments. SCA heralds provide support at tournaments by announcing the names of the combatants, serve as the voice of the Crown during courts and as otherwise needed, make announcements at events, provide information to resolve questions of precedence and protocol, and help others to find appropriate names and armory for their chosen culture and time period.

Heraldic Organization
The first level of SCA heraldic organization is the kingdom level; each kingdom has a College of Heralds. Many SCA groups have a designated heraldic officer. In baronies, principalities, and kingdoms, this officer is usually the designated voice of the ruling nobility. In principalities and kingdoms, the officer is called the Principal Herald, and usually has some administrative responsibilities, including the appointment of deputies to oversee the processing of name and device submissions and maintenance of the order of precedence. (These functions are not always separate from those of the kingdom in principalities.) In baronies and smaller groups, the heraldic officer is usually the default person to make announcements and to assist group members who wish to submit names and devices. However, any herald can assist with these tasks.

The process of providing heraldic credentials varies from kingdom to kingdom. Some kingdoms have a system of training and testing heralds for advancement or to issue warrants; others simply issue warrants to persons who provide proof of membership and demonstrate an interest in heraldry.

The second level of SCA heraldic organization is the Society level. The SCA College of Arms administers heraldry throughout the SCA. Its head is the Laurel Sovereign of Arms; the Laurel Queen of Arms is currently Countess Elisabeth de Rossignol. Warranted heralds are usually automatically members of their kingdom's College of Heralds; however, membership in the College of Arms is limited to the Laurel Sovereign of Arms, their designated deputies and staff, and those who provide commentary on name and device submissions. Some kingdoms designate a specific herald to provide commentary on submissions.

Presently, there is a deputy for name registration (Pelican Queen of Arms Margaret Makafee) and armorial registration (Wreath Queen of Arms Jeanne Marie Lacroix). The Morsulus Herald maintains the Society Ordinary and Armorial, a record of all names and devices registered in the Society.

Heraldic Titles and Ranks
There are a number of heraldic ranks and titles, both at the kingdom and Society levels. In some kingdoms, a trainee herald is called a Cornet; once the Cornet has passed a basic test and has gained experience in the various fields of heraldry they are accorded the rank of Pursuivant, while senior heralds are referred to as "Herald." In other kingdoms, these titles are based solely on the heraldic office an individual holds. For example, a kingdom may choose to style all deputies to the principal herald as "herald," and all local heraldic officers as "pursuivant." Heralds who hold no particular office are frequently referred to as pursuivants-at-large. Finally, the Laurel Sovereign of Arms may choose to name heralds who have provided long and dedicated service to the College of Arms "Herald Extraordinary."

Historically, heraldic titles could come from place names (Richmond Herald), surnames (Chandos Herald), charges (Rouge Dragon Pursuivant), and order names (Garter King of Arms). (These heraldic titles are all English.) Heraldic titles in the SCA are frequently taken from the name of a charge on a group's arms (e.g., Triskele Herald of Trimaris), from documented or conjectural heraldic charges, sometimes from the name of an order (e.g., Pelican Sovereign of Arms), occasionally from place names (Midlands Herald of the Middle), and hypothetically from surnames.

Historically, English heralds could use their heraldic titles as surnames; for example, in a 1541 lay subsidy of London, two heralds are listed as "Master Richemond Harrord" and "Mr York Harrord"; in The True Use of Armorie (1592), the narrator refers to "a Herauld ... surnamed Faulcon" (perhaps corresponding to Falcon King of Arms). Anthony Wagner asserts this right for members of the English College of Arms in the 20th century; many SCA heralds with titles will frequently sign heraldic correspondence with their title (e.g. "Margaret Pelican"), or refer to colleagues this way.

Who is a Herald?
In the SCA, anyone can practice heraldry as an activity. Generally, you do not need a special office or title to help others choose names and research devices, herald a tournament, or make announcements at an event. The only activities limited to persons of a particular rank involve actually accepting and processing submission forms. This is because this duty involves working with money. Who may do this varies from Kingdom to Kingdom. Officially licensed Kingdom heralds are said to have a warrant.

Also, royalty, nobility, households, or any individual may retain someone as their personal herald for court, as a messenger, and other heraldic duties. Who this person is and what their duties are is strictly the prerogative of the "employer."

Heralds can frequently be identified because they wear tabards: garments which depict the arms of the person who employs them on the front, back, and sleeves. Only heralds should wear tabards; however, it is authentic for others to wear heraldic surcoats or gowns, depending on the time period and culture they seek to recreate. Tabards with baronial or kingdom arms may be part of the group's regalia; heralds who do not hold a specific office sometimes wear medallions, favors, or tabards with the SCA College of Arms logo shown above.

<div style="float:right; margin: 0 0 1em 1em;"></div>

Strongholds in the SCA
A stronghold is institutional branch of the SCA based at a military installation. It is similar to a port or a college, which are the other two forms of institutional branch.

Strongholds require:

* At least 5 members.

The territory of such branches is defined in terms of affiliation with the institution where they are based, not in terms of physical boundaries. Institutional branches may report directly to a kingdom, but if their institution is located within the borders of a branch of any other class, they report through that branch. They differ from other local branches in that they go dormant if membership falls below five (5), rather than being disbanded.

The Stronghold of Nebelwald is a branch of the Society for Creative Anachronism in the U.S. military installations at Hohenfels, Vilseck, and Grafenwoehr, Germany. It is equally well know for its fighting skills -- fighter practices here are not to be missed!

For folks that only speak English, "Nebelwald" translates (from German) as "Foggy Forest", a truly apt name for this corner of Bavaria.

The Stronghold was originally named "Forgotten Castle", but that idea was rejected upon a preliminary review by the College of Heralds of Drachenwald. The founder of the Stronghold, Lord Charles Raven, was granted permission by the Stronghold to keep the name for those who were here in the early days as a household name.

The current officers of the Stronghold (30 Jun 2006) are:
*Lady Esmeralda, Seneschale
*Lord Thorald Skegglauss, Exchequer and herald
*Michael, Knights Marshal
*Mistress Eufemia Serafina da Bergamo, Minister of Arts and Sciences

Seneschals to date have been:
*Lady Keara Raven (founding Seneschale)
*Lord Nathaniel Hawkins
*Porter
*Sir Cadogan map Cado
*Lady Esmerelda
