* Game birds (geese, [[duck]]s, [[pheasant]], [[partridge]], grouse etc.) -- usually hunted with [[dog]]s to chase them into taking off, then with bow and arrow to bring them down, and dogs (again) to fetch the corpses back. Again more usually killed for food.

=== [[Cunnan]] isn't an encyclopaedia ===
We are not trying to build an encyclopedia of the [[Middle Ages]], but rather a practical guide for re-enactors. Wordy historical research should be left to the Wikipedia (http://www.wikipedia.org). Historical research on a very practical level (eg "how-to"s of period weapon making) can be added to [[Cunnan]].

=== [[Cunnan]] isn't a dictionary ===
There are plenty of online and paper dictionaries where you can find the definitions of words such as "fish". Articles about "fish" shouldn't need to define what a fish is, but rather give information on medieval types, uses, or recipes for cooking fish. Terms that are not familiar to the modern reader may however be useful to the modern re-enactor, so articles defining modern sca slang (eg [[stickjock]]) or medieval terms and modern names for medieval objects (eg [[pennanular]]) a re-enactor is likely to encounter (in the sca, on [[cunnan]] or in their research) can be very useful.

=== [[Cunnan]] isn't a replacement for [[other re-enactment sites]] ===
Cunnan shouldn't be thought of as a replacement for other sites. This means that [[Cunnan]] shouldn't be used to duplicate the functions of other existing sites (newsgroup archiving for example). Some things can be repeated on [[Cunnan]], such as event information, but things such as local meeting times are best left to the home pages of various [[re-enactment]] groups.

=== [[Cunnan]] isn't a perfect reference ===
[[Cunnan]] can be edited by anyone - this means that false information can slip in from time to time. Everything you see here should be taken with a grain of salt and checked against another source. When reading [[Cunnan]] you should correct those errors you find and add links to other sites as reference.

=== [[Cunnan]] isn't a link farm ===
It's tempting to just add links to other sites and not add "real" content to [[Cunnan]], but adding content to [[Cunnan]] is even better. Even if you only add a few lines to an article it still provides a starting point for other users later on.

A '''bestiary''' is a collection of short descriptions about all sorts of birds, beasts and animals, both real and imaginary. Often bestiary is too narrow a description, and the medieval term "natural history" is more apt as stones, minerals, herbs and trees might also be studied, especially in later periods. The bestiary became a popular form in England in the [[12th Century]]. One example of the late medieval version of a bestiary is [[John_Maplet]]'s [[A_Greene_Forest]].

Two schools' medieval bestiary are known, each descended from early greek authors. The first type is very factual, transmitting myths only through ignorance. Best known are the works of [[Pliny]] the Elder, but a plethora of translations and works based on extended or condensed versions of this existed.

The other kind of bestiary is not concerned with accurate descriptions of the animals, but with using the animals to explain or portray a message. Early medieval bestiaries use the animals to give a moralising explanation of the animals traits and how that reflects upon christianity. From the 13th century onwards, "bestiaries of love" used the stories of the animals as a vehicle for the male to woo a lady. It tells fine messages about the desirable attributes of an animal and is meant to be a message about the man.

A '''lucet''' is a two pronged implement that makes some very nice [[braid]]s with multiple uses. They were used from at least the [[16th century]] onwards, however some viking finds of manmade [[bone]] objects shaped like lucets have been used as evidence of [[viking]] use of this technique. No one has been able to prove the useage of the lucet between these two time periods yet, however finds of other [[braiding techniques]] including [[plaiting]] and [[fingerloop braiding]] have been doccumented between the [[10th|10th century]] and [[16th century]].

The lyre-shaped lucet is technically out of period (though prettier and easier to use). Instead, early lucets were generally a simple tube with prongs at the top ends (most finds being a hollowed, carved bone).

Lucets mostly produce square-profiled cords that are quite neat and nifty, and VERY tough (perfect for [[poynts]] or [[draw-strings]]), but use up a lot of [[thread]] to produce.

They can also make elliptical cross-section braid using the "twisted-stitch:" method that's pretty good for couching cord - as long as it's made with a fine fibre.

Braids can be made with multiple colours - either interchanging on individual stitches or groups of stitches, or used as a [[gimp thread]] for decorative purpose. Beads can also be added either in straight rows or looping around the braid in a helix pattern.

Braids made on a lucet need to be made from [[thread]] that can take a bit of abrasion, as the technique will cause the thread to rub against the horns of the lucet when the loop is pulled tight.

Instructions (including how to make 2 colour and beaded cords) are available at this page:
=== Copyright violation ===
*I'm pretty sure that SCA Australia retains the copyright for [[SCA membership form]], unless we've got authorisation.
**Hmmm, they do but the article only links to a copy of the form (as in its never actually been uploaded to Cunnan). Also, the article should probably have information about where to get the forms (not everyone needs the Aussie one) and what not as opposed to just being a copy of the form. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 12:14 23 Jul 2003 (EST)
**So it's OK to link images stored externally? We should probably just link to the membership page - document names tend to change. [[User:Morgant|Morgant]] 14:14 23 Jul 2003 (EST)
=== Wiki Projects ===
Here's an interesting thought: How about finding slightly older and stalled projects and redoing them here? Things like the University Handbook http://www.kateryndedevelyn.org/unvstart.htm

I'm not saying we steal their work or try to "take over" but these kinds of topics could benifit from having a free wiki version. - Anon
=== Software Upgrade ===
* I'll be upgrading the Wiki [[Cunnan:Software|Software]] Cunnan is running later today 13-Aug-2003. So the wiki might not be useable for an hour or so around 8pm AEST (though it ''should'' only take a few minutes). You can take a look at what the upgraded software looks like at http://www.wikipedia.org - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]
** The software upgrade is now done. The edit times for pages is slightly off at the moment because the new software seems to think it is in the US - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

=== Default skin ===
* [[User:Newt|Beth]] would like to see the default, ugly, skin to Cologne Blue so that non-logged in visitors dont have to look at the site in an ugly format. Unless people object I'll make the switch at some point in about a weeks time (or I might even whip up a new skin that just has the basics and no extra fluff).
Starting a new page on [[Cunnan]] is fairly simple. There are two different ways of doing this, one where the article to be written has a link to it already and another where the article has no links to it.

'''There is a link to the article already'''<br>
Words written in red in articles are links to other articles that don't exist yet. You can follow this link and will be taken to a screen where you can create the articles first version. Don't worry if your first version is only a few words long, other users can expand upon it later.

'''There are no links to the article I want to write'''<br>
Ok, well before you can write it you're going to have to make a link to it (this stops people from creating "Orphan" articles). Find an article to which the new article will be relevant (there is a list of popular topics on the main page) and click on "Edit this page" in the left hand menu. You can then add a link to the article you want to start by adding in some words with double square brackets around them <nowiki>[[Like This]]</nowiki>. If you dont know where to put the link in the article you can always add something like <nowiki>"See also [[Some other article]]"</nowiki> near the end. Once you've made the new link and clicked the "save changes" button. You can follow the new link and start a new article!

A Tournament is a formal competition between combatants. Originally devised as a [[training method]] it soon became very popular as a sport in the [[Middle Ages]], with professional tourney circuits appearing throughout Europe. there were many attempts to ban tourneys, most of which failed dismally.

In the SCA tournament are run for [[heavy]], [[rapier]] and [[light]] combatants. The best opportunity to see one in action is to pop along to [[Stormhold]]'s [[Monthly Bash]], held on the 1st Sunday of every month from 1pm at John Gardiner Reserve, Auburn Rd, Hawthorn.

There are many [[tournament style]]s, from the classic "tennis" style single kill, single elimination (where each bout consists of one fight, the loser is eliminated, and the winner advances to the next round), the common double elimination (Fighters are eliminated after sustaining two losses) and round robin (where every fighter fights every other fighter). Each round may be fought best of one or three fights (commonly) or more. Longer tournaments, such as a best of fifteen fights are sometimes seen. The running of the tournament is the domain of the [[Lists Officer]], who determines who fights whom and records results, the [[Marshal]]s who inspect the fighters' armor, ensure adherence to the [[Rules of the list]] and supervise bouts, and the [[Herald]]s who announce the [[combatant]]s, introduce them to the populace, MC the salutes and announce the victors.

Usually the victor of the tournament wins a [[tassle]] for him/herself, and a token for his/her [[consort]]. There are often prizes for the Most [[Chivalric]], Best [[Death]] or Most Entertaining fighter as well.

Tournaments are also a great opportunity to lounge around in [[pavilion]]s or under sunshades, eat, [[drink]], socialise and work on small projects surrounded by other people doing much the same thing.

The '''SCA Corpora''' is the set of rules and regulations by which the [[SCA]] is run.

While many people talk about the Corpora very few seem to have read it, and people will often wrongly say something is "stated in Copora" to support their point of view on an issue.
