130.194.13.102: /* Indo-European languages */

The main historical '''languages''' that are of interest to people in the [[SCA]] are [[French]], [[Old English]] and [[Latin]]. Most members of the SCA speak [[English]].

Languages change over time for various reasons, like separation, colonisation and invasion. The meanings, pronounciations and grammar in today's languages may be radically different from those in the [[10th century]]. The article on [[Old English]] gives some example of the gradual changes to [[English]]. The important thing to remember is that there never will be a perfect language as language change is cyclic.

== Language Groups ==

There are two main language groups found in [[Europe]], and several smaller groups, or isolated languages. The main groups are:

* The [[Indo-European]] language group.
* The [[Finno-Ugric]] language group.

Other languages found in Europe during the [[Middle Ages]] include:

* The [[Western Mediterranean]] language group.
* The [[Semitic]] language group.
* The [[Hamitic]] language group.
* The [[Caucasian]] language group.

=== [[Indo-European]] languages ===

The [[Indo-European]] language group, or more properly group of language groups, comprises the following sub-groups:

* [[Germanic Language]]s, such as [[Norse]], [[German]], [[English]] (including [[Old English]], [[Anglo-Saxon]], etc), [[Danish]], [[Swedish]], etc.
* [[Celtic]] languages, such as [[Breton]], [[Welsh]], [[Gaelic]], etc.
* [[Italic]] and [[Romance]] languages, such as [[Italian]], [[French]] and its dialects (including [[Waloon]], [[Provencal]], etc), [[Spanish]], etc. Most of these languages are derived from [[Latin]] or its ancestral [[Thraco-Phrygian]] languages. Also included in this group is [[Romanian]] -- it's interesting to find an essentially western european language hiding in eastern Europe, but there's a story to that.
* [[Greek]] and [[Illyrian]] which are also off-shoots of the same [[Thraco-Phrygian]] language group that gave birth to [[Latin]] and the [[Romance]] language groups
* [[Hittite]], an [[ancient]] language of [[Asia Minor]] which is also a descendant of the [[Thraco-Phrygian]] languages.
* [[Baltic]] languages, such as [[Lithuanian]] and [[Latvian]] or [[Lettish]] (but not [[Estonian]]).
* [[Slavonic]] languages, the most widespread throughout eastern europe, including [[Russian]], [[Polish]], [[Serbian]], [[Croat]], [[Ukrainian]], etc. The [[Baltic]] and [[Slavonic]] languages are distantly related, but distinct enough to form separate language groups.

There are enough similarities between all of the [[Indo-European]] languages to tie them together -- for example they are all [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inflected_language Inflectional languages], which means that the structure of a word changes form to indicate its grammatical function. e.g. in [[English]] ''who'', ''whose'', and ''whom'' are inflected nominative, genitive, and accusative forms of the same word (although [[English]] is not a highly inflectional language -- most of the [[Slavonic]] languages are much more inflectional).

=== [[Finno-Ugric]] languages ===

The [[Finno-Ugric]] language group is a much smaller group than [[Indo-European]]. It evolved from the ancient [[Finnish]] languages which have existed from the stone age in the forests of Finland and northern Europe.

The main languages in the [[Finno-Ugric]] group are:

* [[Finnish]]
* [[Hungarian]] (or [[Magyar]])
* [[Estonian]]

Yes, the spread of these languages is interesting. The [[Magyar]]s were originally a northern steppe tribe descended from the Finns

The [[Finno-Ugric]] languages are all [http://en2.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agglutinative Agglutinative language]s, which mean that they use prefixes and suffixes to indicate the grammatical role of the words. Note that the [[Turkic]] and other [[Steppe]] languages such as [[Mongol]]ian are also agglutinative and have many similar grammatical structures, which seems to indicate a connection between these language groups, possibly a very [[ancient]] connection.

=== [[Semitic]] and [[Hamitic]] languages ===

It is worth considering these together as they almost form a combined group. The [[Hamitic]] languages are as closely related to [[Semitic]] as they are to each other.

The main languages in these groups are [[Hebrew]], [[Arabic]] and in earlier times [[Aramaic]] and the various north [[Africa]]n and [[Egypt]]ian languages.

The common theme amongst these languages is that they all exhibit a pattern of root words consisting of three consonants, with vowel changes, prefixes, and suffixes used to inflect them. For instance, in Hebrew:

* ''gdl'' means "big" but is no part of speech and not a word, just a root
* ''gadol'' means "big" and is an adjective
* ''gidel'' means "he magnified"
* ''magdelet'' means "magnifier" (lens)

The languages all have alphabets (eg: the [[Hebrew]] alphabet, or alef-bet), which contain a set of consonants, with the vowels written around, under, following, or above the consonants. They are written right-to-left, rather than left-to-right as in [[English]].

=== [[Western Mediterranean]] languages ===

Probably the most interesting group of languages from a scholar's point of view, but the least widespread, the [[Western Mediterranean]] language group ''arguably'' includes the following languages:

* [[Basque]]
* [[Etruscan]]
* The language in use on the isle of [[Lemnos]] in the [[Aegean]] sea.
* Old [[Caledonian]]

There are many theories on the relationship between these languages, and many difficulties involved in analysing them (mostly because nobody speaks [[Etruscan]] or the [[Aegean]] language any more, and we can't read the surviving inscriptions in this language). It is possible that the language group was more widespread in neolithic times, but was pushed out by the arrival of the [[Indo-European]]s.

=== [[Caucasian]] languages ===

Another interesting one to study -- the main surviving language of this group is [[Georgia]]n. It is also interesting to note that [[Georgia]]n has very similar language structure to [[Basque]], indicating that [[Georgia]]n and the other (minor) [[Caucasian]] languages were originally part of the [[Western Mediterranean]] group -- indicating a further fragment of the ancient tribe that was dispersed by the [[Indo-European]]s.

In his book ''The Boke of Surveying and Improvements'', John Fitzherbert has the following to say about fealty:

====Of dyvers maners of takyng and doyng homage & fealtie====

In so moche I have shewed dyvers dyversities of tenures, & also dyvers maners of makyng of coppyes, and the others of officers of the court, though they be not expressed in the statute. Me semeth also it were convenyent the dyversytes & maner of takynge and doyng homage and fealtie. And ye shall understande, that homage is moost honorable servyce & the moost humble servyce of reverence, that a free man may do to his lorde. For whan the tenaunt shall do homage to his chiefe lorde, of whome he holdeth his chefe maner or maneyon place, by knight servyce and priorite. He shalbe ungirde and his heed uncovered, & the lorder shall syt & the tenaunt shall knele before hym on bothe his knees, and shall holde his handes stretched out togyder bytwene the lordes handes, and shall say thus. I become your man from this day forwarde of lyfe and of membre, and of worldely honour. And to you shall be faythfull and lowly and shalle beare faythe to you, for the landes and tenementes the whiche I holde of you, savynge the faythe that I owe to our soveraygne lorde the kyng and my other lords. And the lorde so sytting shall kysse his tenaunt, the which is a sygne of prefyte love.And why saythe the tenaun of lyfe & of membre, and of all worldely honor? Because he holdeth his landes of his lorde by knight service and also by priorite. For and he holde other landes of a nother lorde by knight service and posteriorite, he shall nat saye to hym of lyfe and of membre, for though he be bounde to hym by reason of his tenures of knyght servyce, to go to batayle with his lorde, and to putte his life and membres in in jeopardy with his lorde: yet can he nat go with them bothe. And therefore shall he go to batayle with that lorde that he holdeth holdeth his landes by priorite. And bycause thereof, if any such tenant dye, his heyre beyngwithin age, the lorde shall have the kepyng of his body, and the profyte of those landes that be holden of hym. Wherefore it is to be presupposed, that the lorde wyll be more lovyng and kynde to hym, than any other of his frendes wolde be. Seyng, that whan he cometh of full age, he shall put his lyfe in jeopardy for his lorde, the which byndeth the lorde by reason the rather to do for hym, whan he is nat able to helpe hym selfe. Where as his frends may fortune cared nat for hym, and hadde lever another had the lande than he.

----

And yf an abbot or a priour, or any other man or woman of relygion shulde do homage, they shall say I become your man, &c, bycause they be all onely p-fessed to god to be his men and women, and to none other. And therefore they shall knele and holde their handes as the other dyde, and say thus. I do to you homage and to you shall be faythfull and lowly, for the landes and tenementes the which I holde of you, savynge the faythe I owe to our soverayne lorde the kyng, &c.

And yf a woman sole shulde do homage, she shall nat saye, I become your woman: for it is nat convenyant that a woman shulde become woman, to any other man than to her husbande, whan she is maryed. And therefore she shall saye as the relygious men and women dothe. I do to you homage, &c.

And if a woman covert with Baron shall do homage, they shall knele before the lorde both, & the lorde shall take bothe their handes bytwene his handes, & the husbande shall speke all the wordes, as thus. We to you do homage, and faythe to you we shall beare for the landes that we holde of you, savyng the fayth that we owe to our soverayne lorde the kyng his heyres, and to our other lordes: & they shall kysse the lorde &c.

And in case a man shulde do homage to his lorde, and the lorde graunt his homage and servyce to a nother man. Nowe shall the tenaunt do his homage & servyce to the grauntee, after this manner. I become your man fro this day forthe, and to you shalbe faithful and lowly, for the landes and tenements that I held of A.B. your grantour, in the townes of C.D. the which to you he hath graunted me homage and servyce in the sayde townes, savynge the faythe that I owe to our soveraigne lorde the kyng and my other lordes. &c.

----

And knowe you that one lorde may have done to hym dyvers homages of dyvers tenauntes, for one maner of lande. But one tenaunt shall do but ones homage for one maner of lande, for thoughe the lorde dye, hie heyre or his assigne, if he sell it or graunt it away, they do represent the lordes estate. But and the tenaunt have done his homage to his lorde, and after the maner, whereof the tenaunt holdeth his landes is recovered agaynst the lorde. Nowe shall the tenant do his homage agayne to him that recovered the maner, for he cometh nat in by the lorde, but by force of the recovere, the which proveth the first homage to be voyde, for it was done to hym that had no ryght to take it.

----
Also ye shall knowe, that a man may distreyne his tenauntes catell for homage by course of commen lawe, and also for relefe. And though a man have payed his relefe, yet he shall do homage and feaultie. also ye shall understande, that no man shall do homage, but he that hath a state of enherytaunce in fee symple or in fee tayle, in his owne right or in his wyves, for tenauntes for terme of lyfe, tenauntes by the coutesye, nor tenaunt in dower, shall do no homage, nor take no homage

----

And if a man holde landes of the kyng in chiefe, & have yssue thre or four doughters & dye, all the doughters shall do homage to the kynge. and if the landes be holden of another lorde, the eldest doughter shall do homage for all, and also the servyces. and the other doughters shal be contrybutories, and beare every one of them their porcyon of the same.

130.194.13.102: minor format, wikify and links.

'''Half circle cloaks''' (also called mantles) were a popular choice throughout much of the [[SCA]] [[period]]. Numerous survivng examples exist today, from the coronation mantle of [[Roger II of Sicily]] to the much more humble Bocksten mantle.

Half circle cloaks were pretty much the norm from about [[12th Century|1100]] on, although scattered survivals of the earlier [[rectangular cloak]] (mostly among poorer or isolated peoples) continued on for some time. The more extravagant 3/4 and [[full circle cloaks]] seem to have evolved as [[weaving technology]] became more efficient, just like the rest of the world's [[fashion]] did.

== On the wearing of half-circle mantles ==

At least one surviving example (the manto belonging to [[Fernando de la Cerda]], at the Museo de las Telas Medivales in Burgos, [[Spain]]) has two ties, one on either side, which are rather farther down than you would expect. This matches this author's experience of wearing one, and actually helps to 'fit' the garment to the body so that it stays put. Also, when worn with pins or ties in this location, half-circle mantles hang in a manner that strongly resembles simialr items seen in 2 and 3-d depictions from period.

Personal anecdote of how simple half-circle mantles behave when worn:
:"My heavy, fulled wool, winter mantle is a pure half-circle, calf-length, and is worn opening at the front, clasped with a heavy double pin (bridged by a chain of approximately 6 inches). It does not tend to slide down the back, but that is because the double brooch is pinned at shoulder level, /after/ arranging the cloak so that the extra cloth wrinkles up at the back of my neck (nice and cozy in cold weather). This is usually about 16-18 inches down from the crease when the cloak is folded in half.

:My summer mantle, being a little shorter and of finer wool, can be pinned to my gown with lighter brooches and doesn't wrinkle up much at the back of my neck because the lighter fabric drapes more easily across my shoulders. It is light enough that it can be comfortably pulled over my head (in the veil/mantle manner) if I need to do so." - Lady Marguerie de Jauncourt

== On decorating mantles ==

Nearly all of the surviving cloaks from period (And yes, I mean the whole 1000+ year stretch) that we have are decorated in ''some'' way. Some, like the 'Sternenmantel' and the coronation mantle of Roger II of Sicily are elaborately embroidered with designs that stand out from the base fabric, some are only 'trimmed' with embroidery (the Mammen cloak). The cloaks from the Burgos collection are decorated in that they are made of elaborately patterned textiles of [[Moor]]ish origin.

Due to artistic (and some archaeological) evidence of undecorated cloaks, it is safe to venture that lower classes wore them. It is also likely that these would be unlikely to have survived as they were ideal candidates for recycling into other things (and also because the richer garments were given into the care of the Church after a period of secular use, which helped to preserve them).

== Extant half circle mantles ==

Three richly decorated semicircular mantles are shown in <u>The Pictorial Arts of the West 800-1200</u> by C.R. Dodwell. The pieces mentioned are: fig 23, p 25, "The so called ''Corontaion Robe of St Stephen'' from Szekesfehervar. Presented in 1031. Budapest, Magyar Nemzeti Muzeum"; fig 25, p28, "German: ''The 'Sternenmantel' of Henry II'' c.1014. Bamberg Cathedral Treasury"; fig 26, p 29, "German: The so-called ''Great Mantle of Kunigunde. c''. 1012. Bamberg Cathedral Treasury."

Interestingly, the "great mantle of Kunigunde" is decorated along the front edge with a band of tree-of-life [[embroidery]] that has been cut into at some later date to form a cope-style neck indentation (sort of a low, rectangular neck hole). The band of embroidery clearly predates the alteration, and probably indicates that it was altered for liturgical use.

There are two extant mantles shown in <u>Museo de Telas Medievales Monasterio de Santa Maria la Real de Huelgas</u> by Concha Herrero Carretero. These are both undecorated, technically, excepting that they are made of rich lampas-weave silk. These pieces are the Manto (cloak) belonging to Fernando, hijo de Alfonso X, and the manto that is part of the suit of clothes belonging to Fernando de la Cerda, which are all made of the same polychrome heraldic metal-brocaded silk.

130.194.13.102: old external link seemed valid as well so I've put it back in. Also added some headings.

Conventional usage of this word in the sca refers to a garment known from the 12th century (actually possibly dating back to about 1060, and forwards to about 1210 in remote areas). This garment differs from the [[t-tunic]] that preceeds and accompanies it in several ways. It appears to have been a court garment, ie used on special occasions by those who could afford special garments used on days when not doing any physical labour.
The body section of the garment (hips to underarms) was much tighter than the normal t-tunic, for the most fashionable kinds of bliauts, the sides of the garment were laced up with spiral lacing, to get a tighter fit. Women wore a bliaut with moderately full ankle length or lower shirts. Men wore garments that came to just above the ankle, but had less fabric in the skirt and were slit up the side to nearly the hip to allow free movement. A wide range of sleeve types were worn with this dress, from tightly fitting sleeves, to sleeves that flare out into a dangling cascade from anywhere between the elbow and wrist. Such sleeves might be knotted if especially long.
Women tended on average to have longer sleeves than the knights and princes depicted in this type of clothing.
A large variety of sub-styles existed within this broad definition, depending upon country, exact time period, rank and personal preference.

== Finding more Information ==
You will be able to find plenty of medieval pictures of this kind of garment if you look for books under the topic romanesque art, but there are no excellent books on how to construct this kind of garment. Many costume books are based on the victorian idea of this kind of garment and are of dubious value at best, downright confusing and wrong at worst (even some which are great for other periods).

== Meanings of the word bliaut ==
The word bliaut can be used to refer to many things:
*It can refer to this broad style of clothing, as above
*It can refer to a specific french sub-style of this clothing, as depicted in the statuary at Chartres cathedral
*In Medieval french texts the word is possibly used to describe all outer garments (tunics, dresses, not cloaks), despite whatever style they are cut in. This usage appears to last until the 14th century.

In Medieval times, a knight was a mounted warrior in the service of a [[Lord]]. The word 'knight' is derived from the German word 'knecht', which means 'servant'.

In later periods, being made a knight was a great honour. A knight's behaviour, both in [[battle]] and normal life, was guided by a [[code of conduct]].
==Knights in the SCA==
In the SCA, a knight is a fighter who has been elevated by the [[Crown]] to the [[Order of Chivalry]] for showing great prowess at [[heavy fighting]] (heavily armoured hand to hand fighting) as well as behaving in a chivalrous manner.

Knights are made by the current [[king]], to whom they swear [[fealty]]. They are recommended by a council of the other knights, but the final decision to elevate a person to the Order is the prerogative of the Crown. Those who do not wish to swear fealty may become '''Masters of arms'''.

SCA knights can be identified by their [[white belt]], [[spurs]] and a [[Chain of Fealty]]. Masters of arms wear a white baldric instead of a white belt and do not wear a [[Chain of Fealty]], unless they have choosen for this reign to swear [[fealty]].

Knights are addressed with the [[title]] [[sir]] whether male or female. Some female knights prefer to be addressed as Dame. Masters of arms use the title [[Master]] or [[Mistress]].

A Knight may take on one or more [[squire]]s to train.
===Order of Chivalry===
=== Headline news ===

OK, I want a new major category for an idea I've been kicking around for a while. I want to do a series of pages, with the high points of the news of the day for a place and other things that someone living there would know. I dont so much want wars and battles, but when the new bridge got put up, who the King is sleeping with this week, who the top poets are and whether or not the harvest was good or bad. I've got some scrawled notes for 1589, and I'd like a set of pages I can do ... a "News from a Place and Time" section would be ideal. And could I please appeal for some way to easily put footnotes into Wiki ? I'm a footnote junkie, because that empowers readers to go do their own research.
[[User:Anton|Anton]]

:Thats an interesting idea. I'd say the best way to go about it would be to link to pages with names like <nowiki>[[News from 1066]]</nowiki> of <nowiki>[[News from 1066, England]]</nowiki> from the different [[period|centuries]]. If there were lots of these pages we'd have to start dividing the centuries into decades. Anyway, the best thing to do now would be to create a [[Cunnan:Period headline news|sample page of headlines]] so that we can all comment on it. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

=== Working with Wikipedia and other online material ===

How do people see this site working with content on http://www.wikipedia.org (or other sites I suppose)? If wikipedia has good content on some topic of interest, do we just address the re-enactment aspect and use an external links section to point people to the wikipedia page? Problem there is that as people surf they end up leaving this site and there won't likely be links to bring them back. Alternatively, we could copy over content from wikipedia so that linked content would point to the Cunnan version, but the obvious problem here is redundant maintainence. Whatever the consensus, it seems the style guide could say a little more about this. [[User:JakeVortex|JakeVortex]] 10:34, 30 Oct 2003 (EST)

:When I've moved in info from the wikipedia I've tried to re-word it so that its a bit more SCA relevant. I'd say that the best way to work with wikipedia content is to move it into Cunnan and work from there, that way we can add whatever we feel is needed to the article without worrying about the goals of the wikipedia. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

On a related topic, would it be possible / desirable to make all external links open in a new window? [[User:Conrad_Leviston|Conrad]]

:It would be possible but it is not something I'd like to do. It would mean making some changes to the wiki software which would make it very hard to upgrade. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

The main problems I have with some of the stuff in Wikipedia is that it is either (a) wrong, being often based on cuts from, say, 1905 editions of encyclopediae, which are in turn based on research conducted in the 1800's, or (b) not applicable to SCA folks.

:If it is wrong or dated, it seems better to fix it there than to make a new copy here. I agree with the comments that the value of pages here is to make the content relevant to SCA folks. ~ [[User:JakeVortex|JakeVortex]]

Now I don't have a problem with a lot of it. It's relevant and accurate and stuff, and we needn't reproduce it here. e.g. the various biographical articles which are quite detailed. Some of their other articles contain a number of innacuracies and/or prejudices, however. Also, an article on, say, the third crusade, for which wikipedia gives the dry facts, is really only useful here if you take the view of how you would handle your persona if he or she were living, say, in the levant in the time of that crusade.

For that reason I'll continue my current approach of linking to wikipedia articles where appropriate, copying and revising where necessary, and re-writing from scratch with links to the original where I feel it benefits Cunnan for me to do that.

=== Standard format for attribution ===
For those that haven't been following the conversation happening in another part of the wiki the topic of attribution for original text has come up. Since we have, at least, one person who insists upon having this style of attribution in the article (and not just the article history) I think there should be some discussion of a standard format.

I don't like the idea of this being used for articles that have been written ''for'' the wiki (since the original author will always be recorded by the software in this case and it is contrary to the wiki ideal) but I do think that it would good for this to be included in articles started using content previously published elsewhere (since the original author may not have been the person who added it to the wiki).

The format I propose is as follows:

----

==== Attribution ====
Much of this article is based on an original article by ''Person XYZ'', you can find a copy of the original article at ''some location (Possibly the article history?)''

----

What do people think of this format? When should/shouldn't attribution be included? - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

:Personally, I think that if somebody wants to have their own perspective with attribution on the wiki I would like to see it done the following way:

:The person would put either a stub or non-controversial entry for the topic in question (eg. the reformation started when Martin Luther accidentally nailed his laundry list to the church door). At the bottom would be a ''See also'' list including something like ''Anton's perspective of the Reformation''.

:Given his writing style and depth of knowledge and writing style I would go out of my way to look at what Anton has to say on a subject. Having extra pages along these lines would IMO add an extra dimension to the wiki, while still retaining its original flavour. Everybody still gets to have their input on the main article page, while individuals are able to put forward a consistant, well thought out point of view in a single article. Best of all no extra coding is required. [[User:Conrad Leviston|Conrad Leviston]]

=== Software Upgrade ===
I'll soon be upgrading the wiki software. This means that the wiki will be locked for a short while and that things may appear to be broken. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]
:The software upgrade seems to have been successful. If you spot any weirdness be sure to mention it here.

:It might be a good idea for everyone to log out and then in again to help clear up any user preference issues - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]
::I just noticed that some of the skins don't seem to be working (Cologne Blue is almost useless), I'll try to fix this quickly. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]
:::Skins are fixed again. The database is now read/write so people can begin editing again. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

For people who asked me if the article count was accurate: It wasn't but it is now. We have 1033 articles (a bit of a difference!). - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

=== Categories ===
The current stable version of the Mediawiki software, which Cunnan is running, doesn't include the experimental Category feature. This means that there are some articles that contain <nowiki>[[Category:whatever]]</nowiki> which no longer do anything special. I've deleted the Category: articles but pages linking to them will still need to be cleaned. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

=== Enhanced special pages links ===
It is now possible to link to specific cases of the special pages. Eg <nowiki>[[Special:Whatlinkshere/Heraldry]]</nowiki> will create [[Special:Whatlinkshere/Heraldry]], a list of all pages that link to the Heraldry article. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] ([[Special:Contributions/Tobin|See my contributions]], another example of the enhanced special page links ;-)

=== RFEs ===

Two enhancements I'd like to see:

* A piece of javascript to place the cursor into the search box on entering the main frame. It would be a few liners in the main template. I'll see if I can dig out the code and paste it here.
* A search for links type page where I can find what links to a certain article without creating the article. e.g. I've written a bunch of pages with links to, say, lollard, lollardry, lollardy, lollards, etc, and I want to find them all in turn if I have to but fix the links so I only create one "lollard" page.

=== Finding a specific users contributions ===
I was trying to find an anton's first news headlines article, and anyway i realised I couldn't work out how to view a list of anton's contributions. I'm not fussed if you decide to keep this private, but I believe you've been running under the idea that anyone could *easily* find out what annother contributor has been editting. New software issue? Lack of Links ot help me? i don't know - tell me.
And I'm still trying to that article...
[[User:Tiff|Tiff]]
:At the bottom of every user page is a "User contributions" link. You can also link to these like so: <nowiki>[[Special:Contributions/Some user name]]</nowiki> e.g. [[Special:Contributions/Tiff]]. Anton's contributions can be found at [[Special:Contributions/Anton]] (a few of his edits have been made when he wasn't logged in these can be found at [[Special:Contributions/210.9.142.25]]. Remember though that edits made by someone who is not logged in could actually have been made by anyone, we shouldn't be quick to assume who an anonymous user is). Anyway, Anton's page of sample headlines can be found at [[Cunnan:Period headline news]] (it wont show up when you search unless you specify that the software should look in the "Cunnan:" namespace. This option appears at the bottom of the search results page). - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]

=== Footnotes. ===

I just noticed a nice way of handling footnotes on the Wikipedia. It is not only possible to link to headings on another page. It is also possible to link to a heading withing the current page e.g <nowiki>[[#Footnote|1]]</nowiki> is translated into a "swish" looking footnote link[[#Footnote|1]] (<--- there it is). If people would like to use this style of footnotes then it might be best to use symbols not numbers as the link text (or an abbreviation of the reference name, etc). - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 21:16, 15 Dec 2003 (EST)

==== Footnote ====
This is where the footnote link links to. Nice isn't it?
== Lochac-centrism? ==

I realise that Cunnan is hosted by and mostly maintained by folks from Lochac. My question is, is there an active intent to make the information on it Lochac-centric, or would you like the information to be more widely applicable?

To give an example of what I mean: take a look at [[non-combatant]], and read it while keeping in mind that most [[Kingdoms]] have completely different rules for light armour and suchlike. The information given is regionally specific but is not identified as such.

Should it be identified as such? Would you appreciate broader perspectives? Or, if this is intended as a largely Lochacian resource, would it be a good idea to put a prominent notice somewhere informing visitors of this fact?

(ex-Lochac, now in [[Ealdormere]])

Just one voice of many, but..
Personally I'd like to see the widest possible audience for this wiki, with the focus being simply a consequence of the users. So I like lochac and sca specific info, but I prefer giving a general introduction, then saying "in lochac...." or having subsections of articles eg "favours in the sca" after "medieval favours"
Sometimes I think articles will be entirely in a subsection eg I think the persona article could be given the subtitle "personas in the sca", enabling other types of personas to be added if anyone comes across them. But since we've labelled this as a sca wiki I'm not so fussy about that as I sound.
And finally, yes you are one of the perfect people to help label the wiki thusly - you know what we are talking about when we slip in Lochac centric stuff, and also know which bits are done differently elsewhere (which we often don't).

One major influence on fashion in the [[12th Century]] was the [[Crusades]].

Many texts talk of crusaders bringing home luxurious goods looted while on crusade, thus changing fashion, but [[Heller (2002)]] asserts that there is little evidence that this actually occurred. The difficulty of transporting goods and the expense of campaigning meant that limited booty actually returned with the crusaders. Most loot was expended to pay for supplies in the east. The baggage that accompanied the crusaders home was largely cultural - their heads were full of fashion ideas and a strong taste for the luxurious goods ([[silk]], [[gold]], decorated bands of [[trim]], and fine patterned [[fabric]]s) that they had seen worn by the highest classes of eastern society. [[Heller (2002)]] The desire for fine fabrics greatly increased existing trade with the east, and the [[Byzantine]] fashions they had seen were copied as best they could from the verbal descriptions given by knights. As a consequence, silken [[bliaut]]s became highly desirable and the appearance of decorative bands on garments increased.

'''Fingerloop braids''' are made by cutting equal lengths of [[thread]] and attaching both the ends (usually knotted altogether) to a fixed point (doorknob is good - coffee-table leg also works) to create a set of loops. The fingers are then inserted individually into the loops ceated, and each loop is pulled through the others in the style as set out in the pattern.

Braids are either flat in cross-section or half-ellipse (flat on one side and rounded on the other). The former was used for [[edging]], [[poynts]] and [[seal tags]], the latter was perfect for [[couching]] - giving a nice flat surface for the side you place on the fabric, and a raised section for the decorative surface.

It is generally quite difficult to make fingerloop braids to any great length, as you are limited by the length that one can comfortably reach. Three partial solutions to this are:
*get a friend to tension your work as you braid using a rod and pushing against the surface where the braid forms from between the hands
*using double length strings, tie a big overhand knot in the middle, braid one side, untie knot and braid otherside (creates only a small blip in centre which can be hidden on a medalion chain by braiding on medallion).
*a complicated system comprising pulleys and a fixed wooden rod on a base that can be used by one individual
Nonetheless, fingerloop braiding is still ideally suited to short lengths which can be easily produced, whereas longer lengths may decline in quality due to large variance in tension

Extant braids, period recepies for creating braids (there was a guild for just this artform) and period illustrations of fingerlooping (including the 2 person technique described above) exist.

The techniques of fingerloop braiding are discussed at length in "Compleat Anachronist #108" available here:
https://secure.sca.org/cgi-bin/stockclerk/ca.html

a basic introduction to the technique is located at (although learning in person in generally quicker):

'''Braid''' generally refers to a woven, long, piece of narrow fabric used for decorative or weight-bearing/strengthening purposes. See also: [[braiding technique]].

Flat cross-section braids were often used for [[belts]], [[straps]] or trim for [[edging]] clothing. Circular or square cross-section braids were often used for [[draw-strings]], [[poynts]], [[lacing]] etc. Very narrow, elliptical or flat-on-one-side braids were used in [[couching]] (see below).

The braid could be made seperately and stitched on later, or be made as the clothing is being made (ie made as part of the clothing, stitching it down as you make it). It could be laid down straight across the fabric (eg along the top of a [[stomacher]]), or following seams in the clothing (even concealing them), or laid in decorative loops/patterns (known generally as [[couching]]).

Some braids were also used to add strength to the edges of clothing, for example, to strengthen the seam along an edge full of [[buttonholes]] to prevent the buttons tearing the fabric.

There are a number of braiding techniques, all producing different forms of braid. The most common (in the [[SCA]]) being:
* [[fingerloop braids]] - produces either flat, or couching braids
* [[tablet weaving|tablet woven braids]] - produces flat braids
* [[kumihimo]] - produces circular cross-section braids
* [[lucet]] - produces square or couching braids

In [[Medieval village]]s people would gather at the '''Village Pump''' to discuss those items that were important to their lives. On [[Cunnan]] the Village Pump serves a similar purpose: Giving users a place to meet and discuss current events, policy and content.
== Announcements ==
* The new wiki server has now gone live.
* Not all the Village pump articles were moved across from the old server (as they were no longer relevant)

== Topics ==
=== Copyright violation ===
*I'm pretty sure that SCA Australia retains the copyright for [[SCA membership form]], unless we've got authorisation.
**Hmmm, they do but the article only links to a copy of the form (as in its never actually been uploaded to Cunnan). Also, the article should probably have information about where to get the forms (not everyone needs the Aussie one) and what not as opposed to just being a copy of the form. - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]] 12:14 23 Jul 2003 (EST)
**So it's OK to link images stored externally? We should probably just link to the membership page - document names tend to change. [[User:Morgant|Morgant]] 14:14 23 Jul 2003 (EST)
=== Software Upgrade ===
* I'll be upgrading the Wiki [[Cunnan:Software|Software]] Cunnan is running later today 13-Aug-2003. So the wiki might not be useable for an hour or so around 8pm AEST (though it ''should'' only take a few minutes). You can take a look at what the upgraded software looks like at http://www.wikipedia.org - [[User:Tobin|Tobin]]
=== Wiki Projects ===
Here's an interesting thought: How about finding slightly older and stalled projects and redoing them here? Things like the University Handbook http://www.kateryndedevelyn.org/unvstart.htm

I'm not saying we steal their work or try to "take over" but these kinds of topics could benifit from having a free wiki version. - Anon

Welcome to [[Cunnan]], a [[Wiki]] collecting information for re-enactors of the [[Middle Ages]] and [[Renaissance]].

[[Cunnan]] is the largest [[SCA]] wiki in the world and anyone can edit our articles. You should '''be bold in updating pages!''' Articles can only be improved if people are contributing new information and improving old information. So add research information, how-to pages, event information and anything else you can think of.

<!-- The stuff below this is the code for the complex boxes on the main page. If you understand HTML tables then feel free to edit them, otherwise leave a note about what needs to be changed on the talk page and someone else will alter it. -->
