There are two thing I'd like help with on this page:

# I need a small image of a Baronial coronet to add into the bottom corners.
# I'd like to make the borders of the box (internal and external) pink, to mimic the Lochac device, but I don't know enough to do it.
:I modified the style tags to do what I think you're looking for. As far as coronets, you want photo or drawn image?--Thorgrimr of Dragonsspine 01:10, 3 Aug 2005 (CDT)

Thanks for the modifications, I was able to fiddle around a bit more and get something like what I wanted. You should be able to see a resemblance between the Lochac arms and the Barony table now. I'm not sure if the pale colours or the straight red and blue look better, but for the moment I have decided to be bold.

As for the coronet, a drawn coronet is what I was thinking of. If you could manage it on a blue background that would be great. Conrad Leviston 08:43, 3 Aug 2005 (CDT)

* Guys, my problem with some of these designs is their size due to the pictures. Can we shrink the size of the images on the pages, or shrink the actual images? Likewise for the device on the Lochac page. And Conrad, is a type of crown specified or traditional for Lochac, because lovely though your image is Thorhrimr, I noticed that you changed the look of the crown. - Cian Gillebhrath 01:50, 4 Aug 2005 (CDT)

**Cian, am I correct in assuming that you meant this comment to go to the Template:SCA Kingdom box page? If so I agree that on a lower resolution monitor some of the devices are too large. The Lochac Barony Template works well for me in a range of resolutions. You can resize an image by adding a | after the image name and then specifying the number of pixels wide you want the image, e.g. 200px . The CoA blazon for the Lochac arms does not specify the type of crown, so any crown is a fair interpretation. I drew up the older device with that crown because that seemed to be the way most people did it, but you would have to ask an active Lochac herald.

*** My personal opinion is that the image of the Lochac device should on this template should not be any larger (roughly) that the "Lochac Barony" text. As it is, the template is overwhelming the rest of the text on the page... cf. Barony_of_Politarchopolis. And likewise, on the Kingdom pages, the summary boxes are already so large that they swamp the text (cf. Kingdom of East). If the devices are large too, then this is just added to. The smallest seems to be that of Kingdom of the West. I like the size and simplicity of the Template:SCA Kingdom box. It doesn't need colour. It doesn't need pictures. It doesn't need anything but links. It is just to make the user's journey easier, not to try and sell them a car! <br> And about the crown, I was just trying to make sure that the new pic of the Lochac device wasn't breaking any local protocol/tradition/heraldic norms. - Cian Gillebhrath 20:14, 4 Aug 2005 (CDT)
****The reason that the Lochac Barony template dominates the Politarchopolis page is because that page is little more than a stub. I personally like the colours and images (which are after all relatively small) and think that they act as a quicker visual cue than the text. 130.194.13.101 23:01, 4 Aug 2005 (CDT)

*I'm sorry the crown isn't the same as before. I can go back to the drawing board, but it'll take some time, I've got some other heraldry requests locally ahead of it and they're for patches being sewn onto Sporrans (read paid work, lol). I'm glad that we can resize the image with the '|size' in the Image tag so that the gallery will still show the image at full size. I'll remember to add that as I update or add any graphics.--Thorgrimr of Dragonsspine 12:29, 4 Aug 2005 (CDT)
** Thanks for the coronet image by the way. It is exactly what I had envisaged. Conrad Leviston 18:26, 4 Aug 2005 (CDT)

130.194.13.101: /* Drinks */

Brewing is an ancient art and is fairly easy and fairly cheap to get started with. It's far easier than you think. Brewing encompasses any boiled and fermented beverage, anything between beer and mead.

Fermentation, simply put, is the process of yeast converting sugar into alcohol and CO2. Brewing, at the most basic level, involves giving yeast things to eat. It's a little more complex - you also need to manage what kind of yeast you have, what the yeast has to eat, and for how long.

Different brews require different techniques - if you're interested in making a specific drink see the links below.

The History of Brewing
Brewing was known to the early Chinese, the Mesopotamians, the Egyptians and the Babylonians. As best as we can make out, most of these early brews involved thick porridge-like mixes of grain and water that had been left out for wild yeast. The resulting 'beer' was probably not particularly tasty, but alcoholic. Big news.

Beer tended to dominate cultures that lacked wine - the Romans looked down upon those pesky barbarians who drank beer.

It has only been relatively recently that the agent of brewing (yeast) was actually understood to be any part in the brewing process at all. Many of the old recipes call for you to simply put the ingredients into a barrel previously used for the purpose and wait. It was not known what it was that magically caused the alcohol to form in the brew.

Obviously, brewing still worked - mainly because the grapes often carried the wild yeasts upon them, but also because the residue of the previous brews would still be embedded within the grain of the oak casks.

General Brewing Technique
If all that you're interested in is Beer then you should visit a home brew shop or supermarket and pick up a brewing kit. These tend to include most if not all of the following:
* Long plastic spoon
* Fermenter (including lid, airlock and rubber seals)
* Bottle filling valve

This equipment can be used to brew other things than beer and should cost $60-$100 (Australian).

Wine kits are also available - though often much harder to find. However most stores also offer many books on brewing that will give you a wide range of options for your brewing pleasure.

Basic Safety
The number one tip I can offer is to do a good job cleaning your equipment. This really does make a huge difference to the outcome.

While many people claim that it is necessary to sterilise, it is more important simply to follow good common sense with regard to basic hygiene. you're basically doing some cooking with some food that will be sitting around for weeks (beer) or months (wine) and so if any greeblies get in - they will breed for that time and you'll end up with an awful mess.

If you trust yourself to be exceptionally clean, then do so, but otherwise, invest in some of the pink sterilising solutions you can get at a brew shop. Alternatively, try Aquashield.

A word of warning: be careful if you use sterilisers that aren't specifically for brewing!

You will be drinking this stuff later, and drinking bleach or other household sterilisation stuff is a Bad Idea&trade;.

The only other thing to be careful about is bottling - read the page on glass grenades to get an idea of one of the more dangerous problems that can occur if you're not patient.

The serpent offering the fruit, huh? I suppose all those tales of dragons capturing fair maidens makes sense in that context. Especially if you're one of those nutty religious types who believes that the fruit is a metaphor for sex. The maid is captured by the rapacious and then rescued by the chaste.

Braid generally refers to a woven, long, piece of narrow fabric used for decorative or weight-bearing/strengthening purposes. See also: braiding technique.

Flat cross-section braids were often used for belts, straps or trim for edging clothing. Circular or square cross-section braids were often used for draw-strings, poynts, lacing etc. Very narrow, elliptical or flat-on-one-side braids were used in couching (see below).

The braid could be made separately and stitched on later, or be made as the clothing is being made (ie made as part of the clothing, stitching it down as you make it). It could be laid down straight across the fabric (eg along the top of a stomacher), or following seams in the clothing (even concealing them), or laid in decorative loops/patterns (known generally as couching).

Some braids were also used to add strength to the edges of clothing, for example, to strengthen the seam along an edge full of buttonholes to prevent the buttons tearing the fabric.

There are a number of braiding techniques, all producing different forms of braid. The most common (in the SCA) being:
* fingerloop braids - produces either flatish, round or couching braids
* tablet woven braids - produces flat braids
* kumihimo - produces circular cross-section braids
* lucet - produces square or couching braids

Braiding is the craft of making braid from spun thread. Braids can be decorative, practical or both, and the technique used can determine which category the resulting braid falls into.

There are a number of braiding techniques, all producing different forms of braid. See the braid page for a discussion of braid types and uses, beolw is a list of techniques and links to pages on them.
* fingerloop braids - produces either flat decorative braids, or flat-one-one-side braids good for couching. Quite quick to make, but hard to make longer than a metre or so in length and increasingly harder to add more threads (as you only have ten fingers). Decorations are limited by the highly interlooped way the threads move in the band
* tablet woven braids - produces flat braids of any length (within reason) and with a very high degree of control over the decoration (especially with the advanced double-face and 3/1 twill techniques). The braids are also very strong and durable.
* kumihimo - produces circular cross-section braids of astonishing complexity and beauty - traditionally made in silk, weaving tends to take a bit more time, but the results are worth it
* lucet - produces square or couching braids - braiding is quite easy to do, though it can be time-consuming and the threads used must be hard-wearing due to abrasion - but this is a braiding technique that can be taken on the train/bus with you
*fingerweaving - produces cords or flatish braids that may have semi-complex patterns, multiple colours and may be longer than fingerloop braids. Not as strong as other techniques, no equipement required, medium speed and complexity.

A feast where everyone brings along a plate of food.

The autocrat will generally supply bread and often cordial. Sometimes soup will be supplied too.
Each person attending is expected to bring along a quantity of food suitable to serve 6-8 people (generally), ie bringing along enough food to feed you of one type, although you will share and eat some of many dishes. Remember that this is one dish per person, so if you invite a friend or bring along children, either ask them to bring food, or bring food for them.

Typical quantities of food to bring are:
* one whole roast chicken
* a bag of apples
* A large tart or pie
* A large loaf of flavoured bread

Remember that Chicken and apples are pretty typical examples given for food to bring to potluck picnics, so sometimes we end up with 6 chickens and 3 bags of apples - very boring. Here is a list of other suitable /foods that don't require cooking. (also helpful may be a list of non-period foods.)

Of course if you have the time to cook for a potluck, we'll all love you. See recipes.

Remember to bring your own feasting gear, and that the food at the potluck will often be sitting around in your car/bag, then at the event, without heating or refrigeration facilities. (sometimes these are available, but ASK first). So to avoid food poisoning, it's important to use food hygiene standards. Dishes like pies, vegetables, fruit, sweets that can be served cold are good, while luke warm meat dishes can easily grow bacteria unless you can bring them straight from the stove/oven to the serving table at the event.

You're doing good work editing articles but could you please hold off putting things such as "- to give oral sex and use foul language." on article pages? Even if this was relevant Cunnan isn't a dictionary (though I'll admit some dictionary style pages are needed for terms only used in the SCA). I dont like seeing people banned but if you do this often I or one of the other admins will take away your right to edit articles - Tobin 14:35 6 Aug 2003 (EST)

:That wasn't a challenge. I don't dispute what you're saying but it isn't relevant to Cunnan. If you can put to gether a paragraph or two about the use of "French" to mean oral sex in period then it can be included. Otherwise you should add it to the Wikipedia of Wiktionary (http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/French and http://wiktionary.org/wiki/French) - Tobin 14:48 6 Aug 2003 (EST)
It's only been suggested once that you should be banned. DOnt get worked up over it, if you can justify what you're doing then no one will complain (editing the FAQ wasn't a good way of doing this)

Cloved lemons are often handed around at feasts or camping events. Love it or hate it, it's a tradition that is engrained in SCA culture. Here's what happens:

Someone approaches you with a cloved lemon. You can do one of two things.
# Take the cloved lemon.
# Politely refuse the cloved lemon.

If you choose option 1, you take a clove out of the fruit with your teeth (don't bite too hard into the clove. It'll taste revolting, and it'll make your whole mouth go numb ;) The clove is supposed to freshen your breath. You then indicate to the person who gave you the fruit where to kiss you - often the hand, cheek or lips, it depends on your comfort level with the person who gave it to you. You then find another victim - oops! person to pass it on to.

If you choose option 2, and there is NO shame at all in doing this. It is not impolite to refuse a cloved lemon, and your decision is respected (and often understandable). There is, of course, the other option - whenever you hear mention of a cloved lemon being passed around, to just avoid it like Plague (see: Black Death) and go outside for a cigarette.

Why do we use cloved lemons?<br>
In period, you never wandered up to a stranger and introduced yourself. You were always introduced by a third party. This is a little to rigid for our modern society. Instead, we have taken the third party and made it a lemon.

130.194.13.101: added looms

Tablet-weaving (also called card weaving) is a great way to make sturdy, woven bands of braid. These bands were used in period for straps, belts, braids for costume, bookmarks and ecclesiastical accoutrement.

The technique involves a set of cards threaded with (usually) four threads through the holes in the corners (6 is also known in period). The end of the threads are held tight and form the warp of the weave. The cards are turned a quarter-turn at a time, with the weft thread passing through the shed (or gap) between the upper pair of threads and the lower pair. Each card thus twines the four threads around each other and this twine is held in place by the weft. Tablet weaving is an easier form of weaving to start, as it does not require a loom to learn, however a loom will help maintain tension and to get up and down from you weaving easily. You can see some detailed manuscript pictures of period tablet weaving looms at:
http://www.kb.nl/vh-cgi/vhoverview.pl?Iconkeywords=73A354*&iconView=IMAGELIST#

Tablet-weaving is a warp faced weave, which means that the warp threads are what makes the surface-pattern. This pattern can be fairly complex depending on a several styles of tablet weaving, and the pattern is made up through the effect of:
* threading of the cards (both the direction of threading and also what colours are in each hole)
* turning the cards (forwards, backwards or any combination thereof)
* "twisting" the cards (turning the card on its vertical axis to swap the colour that's on "top")
*Adding a suplemental weft (brocading) to create a pattern
*occasionally embroidery or beads were added to a band to enhance surface decoration

These bands can be extremely decorative (including intricate surface decorations in gold thread, called brocading) or intricate double sided patterning such as double face weave and 3/1 twill, and was probably the major way of decorating clothes in early period.

Tablet-woven braids are very strong and resist abrasion/wear. They can be (and were) used as belts, baldrics, straps, decorative trim or edgings etc.

There are many people who can teach the basics of this art, so ask around, as it really helps to have a person to set you on your way.

A great website for the basics is on Phiala's string page: - http://www.stringpage.com/old/basictw.html

Have a look at the other tutorials there too as they go into great depth about how it all works. There is even some great info on how to do some off the advanced stuff like 3/1 broken twill.

The common abbreviation of tournament.

A tourney is a formal competition between combatants. Originally devised as a training method it soon became very popular as a sport in the Middle Ages, with professional tourney circuits appearing throughout Europe. there were many attempts to ban tourneys, most of which failed dismally.

In the SCA tourneys are run for heavy, rapier and light combatants. The best opportunity to see one in action is to pop along to Stormhold's Monthly Bash, held on the 1st Sunday of every month from 1pm at John Gardiner Reserve, Auburn Rd, Hawthorn.

There are many tournament styles, from the classic "tennis" style single kill, single elimination (where each bout consists of one fight, the loser is eliminated, and the winner advances to the next round), the common double elimination (Fighters are eliminated after sustaining two losses) and round robin (where every fighter fights every other fighter). Each round may be fought best of one or three fights (commonly) or more. I (Gwynfor Lwyd) have seen a best of fifteen fights a couple of times. The running of the Tourney is the domain of the Lists Officer, who determines who fights whom and records results, the Marshals who inspect the fighters' armor, ensure adherence to the Rules of the List and supervise bouts, and the Heralds who announce the combatants, introduce them to the populace, MC the salutes and announce the victors.

Usually the victor of the tourney wins a tassle for him/herself, and a token for his/her consort. There are often prizes for the Most Chivalric, Best Death or Most Entertaining fighter as well.

Tourneys are also a great opportunity to lounge around in pavilions or under sunshades, eat, drink, socialise and work on small projects surrounded by other people doing much the same thing.
