* Fighting with live steel is not permitted at SCA events. If you want to do this, a number of re-enactment and other groups have this as a focus. Also note we are not talking about authorised rapier fighting with approved practice weaponry.
* Follow your local mundane laws with regards to carrying weapons. This may require you to have the weapons in a secure bag or container when not at an event.
* Be responsible and do not touch other people's weapons without permission, be they real or SCA weapons. If you are given permission to handle someone's weapon, be aware that the oils on your fingers can cause damage to a metal blade, and hold the weapon only by the hilt (unless the owner instructs you otherwise).

The only exceptions to the first rule are:
#In honour of the crown
Many 'real' swords owned by SCAdians are more decorative than functional. These types of "weapons" are sometimes referred to as sword like objects or SLO's and are generally owned by those using swords as a costume accessory, as an unsharpened sword is much safer and more practical for this purpose.

At the same time, there are some true weapons enthusiasts in the SCA and other groups, with an interest in determining the actual capabilities of weapons. As such test cutting of weapons has increased in the last decade. These tests are aimed at assessing claims of the types and amounts of damage that can be delivered by weapons to both organic and inorganic targets.
In medieval times, mercenary companies were extremely
fielded as such. The Genoese crossbowmen at the
Battle of Crecy were such, as were the late-medieval
Italian condotteri (literally "contractors").

Other examples of medieval mercenary companies included the
Varangian Guard of Constantiople and so-called free-lancers: mounted horsemen with no fealty to a specific
lord, literally a "free lance" who could be hired into service.

In period they were used to supplement (or substitute for) a kingdom's army :: their main drawback lay in the fact that, once the principle of fighting for money had been established, it was not long before the concept came along of changing sides in return for more money.

At one stage medieval Europe was lousy with mercenary companies, led by the like of Sir John Hawkwood, who had elevated their art from fighting for money (and spoil) to not despoiling a territory if they were given enough money to go elsewhere (qv Danegeld)

While highly sought after as skilled and disciplined warriors, they
were often reviled as being honorless hirelings. Mercenaries'
value was increased by the fact that the feudal rule of "forty
days' military service" did not apply to them: they would be
obliged to fight as long as they continued to be paid.

Modern Mercenaries
Most modern mercenaries are more like security consultants
than combatants. The notion of a mercenary company along medieval lines is extinct, except for one notable exception: the Swiss Guards of the Vatican are still a mercenary company along medieval lines. However, the terms of their contract is extremely long-term, and not likely to change anytime soon.

Mercenaries in the SCA
The romantic image of the "Soldier of Fortune" has spawned many
mercenary households in the SCA, such as Iron Lance, Concusare, and Perchainne. Usually these households are hired by the
crown or other nobles for war events such as
Pennsic. Under such circumstances, mercenaries are usually
paid in useful goods (rattan, armour, fabric), SCA currency and beer.

There are some households known as "Allied" households, who are not tied to a specific Kingdom but are also not "hired" in any way. This can be for many reasons, such as having a nomadic household persona, having members in more than one Kingdom who would like to fight as a unit, or being from a non-SCA organization that occassionally participates in the SCA on masse at events like the Pennsic War. They may make an alliance with a given Kingdom for the term of a war event or a reign but are not paid for it, and are not considered mercenaries. Some examples of Allied households include the Great Dark Horde, the Rozakii, and the Tuchux.
Mercenaries in the SCA
The romantic image of the "Soldier of Fortune" has spawned many
mercenary households in the SCA, such as Iron Lance. Usually these households are hired by the
crown or other nobles for war events such as
Pennsic. Under such circumstances, mercenaries are usually
paid in useful goods (rattan, armour, fabric), SCA currency and beer.

There are some households known as "Allied" households, who are not tied to a specific Kingdom but are not hired in anyway. This is often because they have members in more than one Kingdom who would like to fight as a unit. They may make an alliance with a given Kingdom for the term of a war event or a reign but are not paid for it, and are not considered mercenaries. Some examples of Allied households include the Great Dark Horde and the Rozakii.

A mercenary is a warrior who fights for money,
without concern for loyalty to national or ethnic identity. Long
before standing armies, mercenaries would sell their
services to the highest bidder, becoming valued professional
soldiers.

Medieval Mercenaries
In medieval times, mercenary companies were extremely
common. These soldiers would be hired as a complete unit, and
fielded as such.

Thorbjorn Osis Brandsson was a notable SCAdian who dwelt in what would become the Kingdom of Ealdormere. His full title was Duke Sir Thorbjorn Osis Brandsson, having been in his time King of the Midrealm twice and Prince and King of Ealdormere. He was knighted in A.S. XXVIII by King Jafar of the Middle Kingdom.

Sir Thorbjorn is mentioned extensively in the Chronicles of Eoforwic, having been active in that canton for many years, although originally under the name Osis of the Livery. It was rumoured widely that his addubment was withheld by the Chivalry for years until he styled himself differently. An amusing anecdote in the Fifth Book of the Chronicles details how Sir Thorbjorn "discovered" his first name and was promptly knighted for it. This anecdote has a kernel of truth in it, however the actual situation was much more complicated as one might imagine.

Sir Thorbjorn's second reign in the Midrealm was notable for the way it started, being the first reign after the Interregnum of A.S. XXX. Thorbjorn was also the first Midrealm king to require all three orders of peerage, the Royal Peers and the Baronage to formally swear fealty to the throne at the start of his reign; such formal homage had previously been done only by the Chivalry.

Sir Thorbjorn's blazon is:
:Argent a wolf's head cabossed on a chief embattled sable three cups argent.

Duke Sir Thorbjorn passed away in A.S. XXXIV while King of Ealdormere. He is memorialized in a grant-level award in Ealdormere, the Order of Thorbjorn's Hammer, which is awarded for excellence in martial endeavours.

Households are groups within the SCA, usually based around an interest in certain areas of SCA endeavour, or friendship groups (or both!). Sometimes a peer will form a household that includes his/her apprentices/proteges/squires. Unlike other groups, such as a barony, Households aren't based on geography (although members of a household may be from a particular geographical area), they are not official groups of the Society, and any "membership requirements" of a household are at the discretion of the household. A household cannot hold official meetings or events, but they are more than welcome to run events on behalf of the official group. They may include or exclude anybody they like, whereas an official group cannot do this.

They can be a great support network, and often the activities of the household will extend beyond SCA. Another way to look at it is that a household is your "family" and the group the village/hamlet that you live in.

You do not have to be a part of any household, and just because someone is a part of a particular household does not mean that you can't hang out with them. You can even start your own household if you want to!

Examples of households in and around Stormhold include House Reverie (based around Sir Antoine le Reveur and his squires), House Woodrose (mainly an Arts and Sciences household of old broken down hacks encumbered by offspring with a few who pretend to fight once in a while when the injuries and venerability allow), Unnamed (another mostly A&S household) and the Axemen (a fighting household that is mostly demographically based around younger members with a few old, wise heads attempting to control the chaos).

Other better known households in the Kingdom of Lochac include Attica, Drakkar, DX, and Descartes.

Over in Drachenwald, the Brighthelm household claim to be a 'hive of scum and villainy' who are always found as far from high table as possible in spite of having as members a number of local, regional and kingdom officers.

In Gleann Abhann, Clan Marshin Fayne is a collection of five households: House Smoking Tankard, House Storm, The Barra Export Company (Ship's Company), House Ishee, and House Golden Panther. They are held together under the twin bounds of service and revelrie.

In Ansteorra, House Arkham is a democratic group loosely based on medieval merchant Guilds/Households. Their interests are Archery (target and combat), Service, A&S, Merchanting, Siege and whatever else strikes their interests.

In Ealdormere notable households include: House DeTaahe, House Galbraith, and House Rivenheart. As in most kingdoms there are many, many others.

There are also a number of inter-kingdom households with members who live and participate in more than one kingdom, such as the Rozakii and Timberwolf households.

Thorbjorn Osis Brandsson was a notable SCAdian who dwelt in what would become the Kingdom of Ealdormere. His full title was Duke Sir Thorbjorn Osis Brandsson, having been in his time King of the Midrealm twice and Prince of Ealdormere. He was knighted in A.S. XXVIII by King Cordigan of the Middle Kingdom.

Also known as Midrealm, the Kingdom of the Middle is the third oldest Kingdom in the Known World. Geographically it consists of Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois and a nip of Iowa, and a bit of Ontario. Midrealm used to contain what are now the Kingdoms of Northshield, Ealdormere, and Calontir.

History of the Midrealm
The Middle Kingdom was originally a principality of the East called The Principality Under the Mountain. In 1969, the legendary Cariadoc of the Bow won the first Crown Tourney of the Middle and was subsequently crowned the first king.

The Capital Provence (that being its proper name for some time) became Treegirtsea, located in Chicago. Soon afterwards, the Barony of North Woods, located in Michigan, joined. These two form the basis of Middle Kingdom politics. A third group in Ohio, The Middle Marches, joined and membership soon spread out into Canada, Kentucky, and the rest of the Midwest.

On October 16th, 2004, the Principality of Northshield gained Kingdom status. In early September 2004, a poll across the Middle began. It debates whether or not the Oaken Region (Ohio and Kentucky) should gain Principality status. As of September 4th, the poll has since ended, since it generated great discussions, arguments, and debates. The Web Minister claims the poll was "of a hypothetical nature".
His full title was Duke Sir Thorbjorn Osis Brandsson, having been in his time King of the Midrealm twice and Prince of Ealdormere. He was knighted in A.S.XXVIII by King Cordigan of the Middle Kingdom.

Sir Thorbjorn's second reign in the Midrealm was notable for the way it started, being the first
reign after the Interregnum of A.S. XXX. Thorbjorn was also the first Midrealm king to require
all three orders of peerage, the Royal Peers and the Baronage to formally
swear fealty to the thone at the start of his reign; such formal homage had previously been
done only by the Chivalry.

Sir Thorbjorn's blazon is: Argent a wolf's head cabossed on a chief embattled sable three cups
argent.

Duke Sir Thorbjorn passed away in A.S. XXXIV while King of Ealdormere. He is memorialized in a kingdom-level award in Ealdormere, the Order of Thorbjorn's Hammer, which is awarded for excellence in martial endeavours.

Storming of the Gate is a small SCA camping event held on the private land belonging to Lord Justinian Clarus in the Shire of Trinovantia Nova in the Kingdom of Ealdormere. Now in its tenth year, the full name of the event is The Annual Syr David Martin Failsworth Memorial Storming of the Great Gate Fight Practice, Pot Luck, and Pool Party. Occuring every summer for the past decade, SOG primarily draws Ealdormereans from the Shire of Trinovantia Nova, the Barony of Ramshaven, the Barony of Ben Dunfirth and warriors from the Midrealm Barony of Starleaf Gate.

SOG revolves around a series of assaults on the Great Gate at the edge of the property, along with woods battles in the woodlot nearby. The armoured combat melees are often held between House Blacksword and the Rozakii.

Owing to the popularity of fencing in the Shire, there has been a fencing tournament held in recent years at SOG, and there are also several assaults and defenses on the gate by fencers.

After the fighting is finished, the traditional brass hat soup, barbeque and campfire occurs. Because Trinovantia Nova is a shire and not a barony, there is no baronial court. There is also no formal feast at this event. Storming of the Gate is known across Ealdormere as being a very wet event, and events around the fire include traditional medieval singing, drinking, and wenching.

The Fighting Households of Ealdormere are large households in Ealdormere which provide a large number of fighters to her army at the Pennsic War. These Houses include House Blacksword, House Fettered Fleur, House de Taahe, House Hrogn, and the Marine Guard.

Traditionally, these Houses fight as units (especially in melees) wearing tabards or surcoats bearing their household arms, to the exclusion of all other arms. In some cases, particularly noted warriors wear tabards with personal arms and household arms quartered.

However, in A.S. XL, King Aaron of Ealdormere issued a request at his coronation to all fighters in Ealdormere, but especially the large Households, encouraging them to make and wear tabards bearing the Kingdom's arms in time for the Pennsic War.

Fighters from other households do, of course, fight in Ealdormere, such as members of the Rozakii and Timberwolf households, as do fighters belonging to no house at all. These fighters may choose to wear their own arms into battle, the populace arms of their Kingdom, barony, or canton, or none at all. Admission into one of the "fighting houses" varies from house to house and there have been some complaints by newer fighters that they feel "peer pressure" to join a house if they want to fight. However, there is no requirement to do so. Those who are interested in joining a particular household should approach members of that household to find out how members are selected, as this varies widely.
Encompassing most of the province of Ontario, Canada, Ealdormere became the sixteenth kingdom of the Known World in October, A.S. XXXIII (1998). Before this, from A.S. XXIII (1988) to A.S. XXXIII, Ealdormere was a principality of the Midrealm, encompassing several pre-existing baronies.

Ealdormere's symbols are the Trillium (a three-pointed white flower common to the region) and the wolf. Ealdormereans often use the term "the Northlands" as a synonym for Ealdormere (this is possibly a reference to the Canadian national anthem, or to the local popularity of Norse personas).

By long tradition, Ealdormere often fights alongside the Kingdom of the Middle in the Pennsic War under their own banners.

History
Early Days

In A.S. IX, then-Count Finnvarr de Taahe and others founded the Canton of Eoforwic in Toronto. This was the first SCA group in to be founded in Canada, and grew quickly. In A.S. XII, the Shires of Septentria and Skraeling Althing (both now baronies) are founded.

The Ban on Regions

The Ban on Regions, also known as King Alen's Ban or Alen's Proscription, was an edict published in the April A.S. XX edition of the Pale forbidding the use of local "regional" organizations beyond those Shires and Baronies recognized by the Crown. Combined with a change in Middle Kingdom law raising the requirements for becoming a Principality, the Ban was punitive measure attempting the halt the growth of "regionalism" in the Midrealm. Directed specifically against Ealdormere, the Ban had a great impact on Ealdormeran culture and history.

More information at the "Ban on Regions"

Crown Principality

In A.S. XXVI, the first Army of Ealdormere, under Prince David I and Princess Tangwystl, marched to the Pennsic War alongside the army of Calontir. Ealdormere has sent an army to Pennsic under its own banners every year since.

Kingdom

Ealdormere became the the sixteenth kingdom of the Known World in October, A.S. XXXIII with the crowning of King David the Greater, and Queen Elina de Braose. The full lineage of the Kings and Queens of Ealdormere is detailed in the Line of the North.

The rousing ballad Rise by Master Hector of the Black Height is viewed as the unofficial anthem of the Kingdom of Ealdormere.

In A.S. XL, King Aaron issued a request at his coronation directed specifically at the Fighting Households of Ealdormere, encouraging them to make and wear tabards bearing the Kingdom's arms in time for the Pennsic War. Previous to this request, these Households had worn their own arms, often to the exclusion of all others. His Majesty explained the request as an effort to promote Ealdormere's arms and reputation to the rest of the Known World.

Fighters from other households do, of course, fight in Ealdormere and other kingdoms, as do fighters belonging to no house at all.
