The Rowany Festival (sometimes called just "Festival") is Australia's largest SCA event. Currently, it is held at the Crossroads medieval village. Anything that people do in the SCA (well, most things) will be on display in some form or other at Rowany Festival.

Festival happens every Easter long weekend - don't miss it for the world.

For more info, check out the website - http://www.sca.org.au/rowany/festival/

Religious observance
If religious reasons are inclined to slow down your attendance at an event over Easter, don't forget that a group of Christians generally get together in a discrete place to hold a scheduled Easter Sunday mass. And if Pesach falls at the same time of year, I'm sure there will be people cooking in accordance with customs - it's actually easier to avoid leavening agents in period cooking.

Camping at Rowany Festival
Hrmm... so you're coming along and don't know what to take? Perhaps you need a camping list?

The history of Rowany Festival
Rowany Festival officially came into being in 1983 (AS XVII), when it ran for four days, and cost $40. The 2004 Rowany Festival ran for six days, and cost a little more.

Rowany Festival has had three different locations - Fairholme Park in Wilton,
Tara Girl Guide camp in Silverdale, and most recently, the Crossroads site near Yass.

Pigments that are used to colour textiles or food are called dyestuffs, pigments used for writing are inks, and pigments used for painting are paints or just pigments.
Dyestuffs tend to be solids that are soaked in water to extract them, and then fibres are added which soak up the water soluble dye. A mordant is added as a setting agent to make the dye stick to the fibre.
Paints tend to require more opacity than dyes. The same ingredient as a dyestuff may be used, but fine sawdust or other filler agents (eg rag scrapings) are added to give the dye bulk. This pigment is intended to mostly sit on the surface of the object, not soak through it. Some pigments are available for use as paints that cannot be used for dyestuffs (e.g. ground lapis lazuli). These pigments do not have water soluble colour, they only need to be ground fine enough to be able to be picked up with a paintbrush.

129.78.228.114: categorising

A glass grenade is the colloquial term for over-pressurised bottles encountered during brewing- more specifically, if said bottle goes pop with considerably messy consequences...

Yeasts, used in brewing, produce CO2 as a waste product. If an alcoholic beverage is bottled while the yeast is still active, the gas will build up in the bottle.

This can be desirable if you want your beer or wine to be "sparkling", but if the beer/wine is bottled too early, the pressure can cause the bottle to explode.

This is a Bad Thing™, especially if the bottle is glass. Not only are exploding bottles a hazard, but they can be a real mess to clean up. Glass is hard to get out of carpet, especially when you have sticky beer making it difficult to vacuum.

What complicate matters is that if your bottles are near each other, one explosion can set off all the rest.

So, some basic safety measures are in order:

* If you are making a non-sparkling wine, make sure you wait long enough that the ferment is definitely over. Don't just rely on a hydrometer, use some common sense. Make certain that the wine is completely clear - clear enough to read through, for a white wine. Shine a torch through it and see if there is a scattering effect - if so there's still some yeast there. Be patient: the longer you wait, the better it will taste. It's better to wait now and have better wine than to lose the whole batch to explosions.
* If you are bottling sparkling wine, make sure you have pressure-proof bottles (eg champagne bottles) with the proper corks for bottling under pressure. You can also go for crown-seals, but you'll have to have enough personality to stand up under the pressure of people looking down their noses. There's still considerable prejudice about this option, due to the way it slows the aging of a wine.
* Don't estimate a time to bottle based on if you think there might be enough sugar left in the brew to get it to pressurise. This is a sure-fire way for the yeast to prove you wrong and keep at it longer than you expect. I would recommend that instead of guessing how depleted the sugar is and picking a time to bottle before the yeast finishes, you let the yeast finish - completely. Then add some more sugar when bottling to pressurise. This gives you two things: firstly, the safety of knowing and controlling how much goes into each bottle (and thus how pressurised it'll be), secondly, the consistency of pressurisation which gives you a gauge to work against for the next brew batch.
* If you don't know how much sugar to put in, you can generally get those "brewing sugar tablets" from the supermarket that give a pre-measured amount of sugar for each bottle. Read the instructions carefully - make sure you know what size bottle you're using! Another alternative is to use a sugar dispenser that releases a set amount of sugar.
* It's a good idea to store pressurised bottles in a way that they won't set each other off (in chain reaction). One method to prevent your entire batch from decorating the ceiling is to put the bottles in a box, then tip a few buckets-full of sand over the top. Each bottle is separated and cushioned from each other bottle. This sand will absorb most of the "blast" if there is a grenade, and will give you a chance to save the remaining bottles.
* If you don't need effervescence, and have particular problems with a batch, you can use a wine stabiliser such as potassium sorbate. Potassium sorbate doesn't kill yeast, but does prevent it from reproducing. It won't stop a fermentation, but will prevent yeast from waking up in the bottle.
* As a final alternative, if you are only going to be storing the beer for a short period of time, and again don't mind a few sneers... store it in the big plastic coke bottles. Not only are these rated for ridiculously high pressure levels, but if one goes pop, you have a split bit of plastic, but no glass shards in the carpet. I wouldn't recommend this for anything more than a few weeks as the plastic-taste is eventually going to be a problem (so not the solution for wines) but it is a great safety measure and cheap and easy to transport. You may have to hide them at events due to the non-period nature of the vessel (a cloth bag the size of your bottle works nicely). Preferably, pour it into a decanter or jug when you're ready to drink it.

Bottling is usually the second last step in the brewing process - transferring your beverage to bottles for convenience. A slightly more period alternative to bottling is kegging. The instructions below are for sealing lipped beer bottles with crown seals, and consequently will not work for other bottling methods.

Period bottling
Cork bottling is supposedly very late period.

Step 1: Acquire Bottles
You can either purchase bottles from the pub and empty them manually, or purchase pre-emptied bottles from a brew store. Screwtop bottles can be used with bottling caps - you may occasionally experience sealing problems. 750ml longnecks are convenient, but it's a matter of personal preference. Brown glass bottles prevent possible problems with light strike.
Bottle caps should not be reused - buy new ones from a supermarket or brew store.
Step 2: Clean Bottles
The easiest way to clean dirty bottles-
#Put them in a bathtub.
#Put in the plug.
#Put a spoonful of Napisan in each bottle.
#Fill the bottles with warm water.
#Fill the bathtub to above the bottles with hot water.
#Wait until water has cooled, and all gunk has floated out of the bottles.
#Empty bathtub. Clean and rinse bottles.
#Dry bottles on a bottle tree.

Note that steps 4 and 5 are not interchangable - if you try, all your bottles will fall over.

Crown seals should also be sanitised before use.
Give bottles a second rinse before use.

Step 3: Fill Bottles
Always remember to sanitise anything that will come in contact with your brew.
*Figure out how you're transferring your beverage from your fermenter to the bottle. One method is to rack your brew from the fermenter into a sanitised vessel with a tap.
*You may want to consider using a bottling wand - a tube with a pressure valve on one end. Attaching the wand to your fermenter outlet allows you to fill bottles by pushing the bottom of the bottle against the valve. This fills the bottle in a controlled manner, introducing the minimum amount of air.
*Once you've filled your bottles, you may need to prime them - your recipe will let you know if this is necessary. This involves adding extra sugar to restart a small fermentation inside the bottle. This adds carbonation - the technique is known as bottle conditioning. Sugar dispensers and carbonation drops are available to make sure that this additional sugar is controlled. Be careful with this step - if you're not, you may end up with glass grenades.

Step 4: Seal Bottles
There are many different bottle cappers available - from cappers that you hit with a hammer, to complicated lever-operated bench cappers. Pick one that suits your needs, budget, and skill with a hammer.

Simply cap the bottles until done - there's no mystery here. Make sure the caps are sanitised before use.

Step 5: Wait
Wait until you're ready to drink. If you primed the bottles, you should wait an appropriate time before storing them in the fridge to allow for carbonation.

Racking a brew refers to the process by which you syphon the good
liquid off the lees at the bottom of the fermenter. This is done
so you get rid of the icky bits (the lees) so that the brew is as crystal
clear as possible. This is generally done just before bottling, but
some recipes call for another rack partway through the brewing process.

The liquid could just be carefully poured off, but this often disturbs the
lees as you go - and it's hard to stop halfway through. It's also much
more difficult to pour from a 5-gallon container than a 1-gallon one.

What needs racking
Racking a beer generally isn't as necessary as most beer fermenters have a
tap installed near the bottom that takes the liquid from above it - and so
beer can be bottled straight from the fermenter. The tap is generally
installed a few centimetres above the bottom of the fermenter - and so the
lees are left undisturbed below that level.

Wine sits in the fermenter for a much longer period of time, and so is
generally done in glass fermenters - which are usually untapped (much
harder to do than plastic). Thus racking is required.

Another reason wine is racked is that it must brew for much longer periods
of time, and if it sits on the lees for many months, the lees can start to
impart a musty odour to the wine (which is not preferable). Thus,
long-brewing wine recipes will instruct the brewer to rack about 6-9
months into the ferment. this obviously occurs regardless of how "clear"
the wine is - but generally you can tell the difference between the wine
and the lees.

What you need to rack
Racking a wine is no different from syphoning any other liquid. You need:

A second container of equal or greater size to the container you are
racking from. This is a very important point as once the syphon starts,
you have to stand there and hold it and can't rush off to get another
container. You can have multiple containers but you may get some spillage
as you pass from one to another.

A high, stable place to put the first container onto. Syphoning
works by gravity causing the liquid to go from one container to another -
so you must have a stable place on which to put the fermenter it's flowing
from.

A syphon - generally a length of non-toxic plastic piping. The
clear water-pipe from the hardware store is good and pretty food-safe too
(at least for the short period of time you'll have liquid going through
it). You'll need about 1.5/2 metres - enough to reach from the bottom of
your first fermenter, up to the top of it, then down to the floor from
whatever high place it's sitting on. If you do a lot of racking, you may
wish to invest in a siphon that has an inbuilt pump.

The racking process
Please read through the entire process before starting as you won't be
able to consult anything partway through the process.

Step 1: Put your first fermenter on the high place

Step 2: Wait until the lees settle as moving the fermenter will
disturb them. About an hour should do it - unless the lees are very fine.
I generally put the fermenter up the night before I'm going to rack, just
to be sure.

Step 3: Put your second container on the floor

Step 4: Put one end of the syphon into the brew - but don't let it
touch the bottom (or it will disturb the lees) - about halfway-up is best
to start with.

You will now need to hold the pipe very carefully at the point where it
enters the fermenter - don't let go until you have completely finished the
syphoning process. If you let go it will either go out of control,
spraying brew everywhere (sticky) or it will touch the lees and disturb
them - in which case you will have to stop everything and wait an hour
until the lees settle back into place again until you can start again.

From now on (to the end of the process) you will also need to keep an eye
on exactly where in the brew this end is - if the brew is murky or
dark-coloured, you will need to tip the syphon so that the end is against
the glass. This way you'll be able to get a glimpse of where it is, and
thus be able to guide it so that it doesn't disturb the lees or come out
of the liquid.

Step 5: Now, the siphon needs to start draining the liquid into the
other. If you're lucky enough to have a siphon with a pump, follow the
enclosed instructions. Otherwise, you'll have to do it the old fashioned
way. Make sure your hands are nice and clean, to avoid introducing
unwanted elements to the brew. (Some brewers also like to 'sanitise' their
mouth with scotch.) Hold the other end of the syphon near your mouth, and
keep the rest of the pipe above the level of the fermenter. This is so
that when you start sucking on the brew - it won't just pour down to your
mouth, and no air-bubbles will get trapped in the pipe. You may need a
chair to do this - but be aware it doesn't have to be lifted a great
height - just enough so the liquid doesn't go the wrong way yet.

Step 6: Start sucking the other end of the syphon so that the liquid
comes up the pipe. In theory you should stop when the liquid gets to your
mouth... or shortly thereafter at least ;)

Step 7: "Stop" the end of the syphon either with your tongue (if
you're going to be the only one drinking this stuff) or a finger from your
free hand (you'll often lose a little bit of the brew).

Step 8: Lower the bottom end of the syphon into the second container
and unstopper the end...

The liquid should now be flowing from the top container into the bottom
container. Now all the work is in steadying and positioning both ends of
the syphon.

The bottom end just needs to not be pouring liquid all over the floor.
This can actually become difficult if you're paying too much attention to
the top end.

The top end needs for you to be paying attention to how fast the liquid
level is dropping and where the end is in relation to said level. If ever
the end comes out of the liquid, air will fill the pipe, the syphoning
will end and you'll have to start over from step 4 (including time to let
the lees settle again), so it's really important that you keep an eye on
this. As the syphoning goes on, slowly lower the end into the brew to keep
ahead of the lowering liquid level.

Keep going until you get to the point where you start to suck up lees.

Then stop by pulling it out immediately.

You're done.

The Renaissance was a cultural movement and time period in the History of Europe, considered to mark the end of the Middle Ages. The Renaissance is usually considered to have begun in the 14th century in Italy and the 16th century in northern Europe.
It is also known as "Rinascimento" (in Italian).

"Renaissance" is a French word that literally means rebirth. This name has been historically used in contrast to the Dark Ages, a term coined by Petrarch to refer to what we now call the Middle Ages. Following Petrarch's lead, the term had long been considered appropriate because during the Renaissance, the literature and culture of the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome were adopted by scholars and artists in Italy, and widely disseminated through printing. During the last quarter of the 20th century, however, more and more scholars began to take a view that the Renaissance was perhaps only one of many such movements. This was in large part due to the work of historians like Charles H. Haskins, who made convincing cases for a "Renaissance of the 12th century," as well as by historians arguing for a "Carolingian renaissance." Both of these concepts are now accepted by the scholarly community at large; as a result, the present trend among historians is to discuss each so-called renaissance in more particular terms, e.g., the Italian Renaissance, the English Renaissance, etc. This terminology is particularly useful because it eliminates the need for fitting "The renaissance" into a chronology that previously held that it was preceded by the Middle Ages and followed by the Reformation, which was sometimes patently false. The entire period is now more often replaced by the term 'Early Modern' in the practice of historians. See periodization.

The following article discusses the Renaissance in its most traditional form, as a cultural and scientific rebirth that began in 14th c. Italy, where one of its main centers was Florence, Italy, and then spread throughout Europe. In science, theology, literature and art, the Renaissance began with a rediscovery of and focus on older Greek texts which had disappeared from the West in the latter years of the Roman Empire. Towards the end of the Renaissance, scientists increasingly began to reject Greek (and biblical) sources in favor of new discoveries. Theologians continued to focus on the Greek, as well as on the relatively new study Hebrew and Aramaic. The second half of the Renaissance is also the period of the Reformation.

Rinascimento is also considered as a sort of natural evolution of italian Umanesimo.

Pavillions are a form of tent used in the SCA. They usually (always?) have at least one open side which is used as a verandah during the day and closed up during the night (or when it rains). Some people put a lot of effort into their pavillions. In day to day usage in the SCA pavilion is used to differentiate a period style tent from a mundane tent such as the ubiquitous dome tent or nylon A frame.

Interestingly, making a period style tent is about as expensive as buying a decent modern tent that is much smaller, and oft-times less practical. Gwynfor Lwyd's 5.5m x 3m Saxon geteld is about $1000 of materials, so the only additional cost is time (and how you cost your time is your business!).

There are larger pavillions which are owned by baronies and so forth (as well as by people who think that bigger is better :-).

If religious reasons are inclined to slow down your attendance at an event over Easter, don't forget that a group of christians generally get together in a discrete place to hold a scheduled Easter Sunday mass.
Cloved lemons are often handed around at feasts or camping events. Love it or hate it, it's a tradition that is engrained in SCA culture. Here's what happens:

Someone approaches you with a cloved lemon. You can do one of two things.
# Take the cloved lemon.
# Politely refuse the cloved lemon.

If you choose option 1, you take a clove out of the fruit with your teeth (don't bite too hard into the clove. It'll taste revolting, and it'll make your whole mouth go numb ;) The clove is supposed to freshen your breath. You then indicate to the person who gave you the fruit where to kiss you - often the hand, cheek or lips, it depends on your comfort level with the person who gave it to you. You then find another victim - oops! person to pass it on to.

If you choose option 2, and there is NO shame at all in doing this. It is not impolite to refuse a cloved lemon, and your decision is respected (and often understandable). There is, of course, the other option - whenever you hear mention of a cloved lemon being passed around, to just avoid it like Plague (see: Black Death) and go outside for a cigarette.

In the SCA the blades on weapons used in combat are in fact strips of electrical tape along the side of the rattan to indicate the cutting edge. The weapon is "blunt" to limit excepionally serious damage being inflicted onto fighters (although being hit hard enough with what is essentially a club can hurt anyway).

If you are going to be using a knife or similar tool in a way that could hurt anyone you should make sure that no one is nearby and warn anyone who is (this seems obvious but accidents do happen). Some people in the SCA like to say "clear" when they unsheath blades near others.
