Stahlgeist is a household in the Society for Creative Anachronism loosly based on Sir Hawkwood's Condottiere White Company. Stahlgeist is a military based household which uses military command structure on the field of combat. Internal household decisions, however, are made by the house as a family.

Years ago, when both the Earth and Omarad the Wary were young, in the Shire of Dragon's Mark in the fair southern reaches of the Middle Kingdom, Omarad met Kato No Inagoichi Kagetaka and Vachir Harrar. A special bond formed between the three young fighters and they banded together in a household. They had seen other households fall to internal strife and petty bickering and decided that this would not happen to them. They decided that House Stahlgeist would be different. Members would not swear fealty to one man, but instead loyalty would be owed to the entire house. Thus the dragon was born.

Others around them, seeing this to be a noble house and sharing a love of fighting and great spirit, wanted to become a part of this and soon Stahlgeist grew into a strong Midrealm fighting unit. Then people outside the Midrealm began to notice. Baron Tiberius from Calontir founded a sister household based on the same priciples as Stahlgeist. That sister house is named Ferro Spettro, which has the same meaning as Stahlgeist in German, "steel spirit". That same year, Angus and the Gaggle from Atlantia joined us. We also have a strong AEthelmearc contingent, and we have proud members in Meridies as well.

Our banner has seen victory from the great Pennsic War to as far west as the War of the Lilies and as far south as Gulf Wars. We have also fought in Pointless War, Border Raids, and Blackstone Raids, where the Midrealm members of Stahlgeist stood almost alone and still won the day. Also, we do more than only fight. We have a great many scribes, artisans, scholars, fencers, artists and teachers throughout the Known World.

'''Households''' are groups within the [[SCA]], usually based around an interest in certain areas of SCA endeavour, or friendship groups (or both!). Sometimes a [[peer]] will form a household that includes his/her [[apprentice]]s/[[protege]]s/[[squire]]s. Unlike other [[groups]], such as a [[barony]], Households aren't based on geography (although members of a household may be from a particular geographical area), they are not official [[groups]] of the [[Society]], and any "[[membership|membership requirements]]" of a household are at the discretion of the household. A household cannot hold official meetings or [[events]], but they are more than welcome to run events on behalf of the official group. They may include or exclude anybody they like, whereas an official group cannot do this.

They can be a great support network, and often the activities of the household will extend beyond SCA. Another way to look at it is that a household is your "family" and the group the [[village]]/[[hamlet]] that you live in.

You do not have to be a part of any household, and just because someone is a part of a particular household does not mean that you can't hang out with them. You can even start your own household if you want to!

::Households in and around [[Stormhold]] include [[House Reverie]] (based around Sir [[Antoine le Reveur]] and his squires), House [[Woodrose]] (mainly an [[Arts and Sciences]] household of old broken down hacks encumbered by offspring with a few who pretend to fight once in a while when the injuries and venerability allow), Unnamed (another mostly A&S household) and [[the Axemen]] (a fighting household that is mostly demographically based around younger members with a few old, wise heads attempting to control the chaos).

* Over in [[Drachenwald]], the [[Brighthelm]] household claim to be a 'hive of scum and villainy' who are always found as far from high table as possible in spite of having as members a number of local, regional and [[kingdom]] [[officer]]s, and the Household of [[Csikós Ló]] sponsors various heraldic-based membership scholarships.

* In [[Ealdormere]] notable households include: [[House DeTaahe]], [[House Galbraith]], and [[House Rivenheart]]. As in most kingdoms there are many, many others.

* In [[Gleann Abhann]], [[Clan Marshin Fayne]] is a collection of five households: [[House Smoking Tankard]], [[House Storm]], The [[Barra Export Company]] (Ship's Company), [[House Ishee]], and [[House Golden Panther]]. The '''Middle Kingdom''' was originally a [[principality]] of the [[East Kingdom|East]] called The Principality Under the Mountain. In 1969, the legendary [[Cariadoc of the Bow]] won the first [[Crown Tourney]] of the Middle and was subsequently [[crown]]ed the first [[king]].

The Capital Provence (that being its proper name for some time) became [[Treegirtsea]], located in Chicago. Soon afterwards, the [[Barony of North Woods]], located in Michigan, joined. These two form the basis of Middle Kingdom politics. A third group in Ohio, The [[Middle Marches]], joined and membership soon spread out into [[Canada]], Kentucky, and the rest of the Midwest.

The current [[Kingdom of Ealdormere]] was a [[principality]] of the Midrealm from [[A.S. XXIII]] (1988) to [[A.S. XXXIII]] (1998), and its creation as a principality was the source of some [[Ban on Regions|controversy]].

On October 16th, 2004, the [[Principality of Northshield]] gained Kingdom status. In early September 2004, a poll across the Middle began. It debates whether or not the [[Oaken Region]] (Ohio and Kentucky) should gain [[Principality]] status. As of September 4th, the poll has since ended, since it generated great discussions, arguments, and debates. The Web Minister claims the poll was "of a hypothetical nature".
