The Neolithic period predates the Bronze Age in most cultures. Neolithic means "new stone" and is characterized by the use of stone tools (frequently made of flint and obsidian) and the absence of metalworking.

Native American cultures were largely neolithic before contact with Europeans. By contrast, Medieval European and Asian cultures were Iron Age.
