Priests could be employed to teach small groups of children, or individual students.

Children learnt their ABC in a similar way to modern children (A is for....). See Marie de France's fables for an example of this.

Children could also be sent to monastaries where they would learn to read the Vulgate (the Latin Bible), to write, to sing, and about the the scriptures and the Church's teaching.
